I cannot begin to tell you how angry this book made me, and I've read so many books so they just don't do that to me anymore. Yet, this one somehow did. SPOILER ALERT for those who haven't read the book.There's no doubt that Ahdieh is very, very talented. The writing is beautiful, exceptional. The author creates these wonderful scenes and imagery that makes you feel like you yourself are there by Shahrzad's side. I could taste the food, smell the marketplace, see the dazzling beauty within the palace. Every word Ahdieh writes is like a gem. She uses metaphors, allegories, and other tools of writing to show you what's going on instead of just telling you outright. The bad side of writing like this is sometimes scenes get confusing and you don't really know who's doing what, or what's really going on, but that's all here and there. The writing, I think, is the only thing that saved this book. Ahdieh is a beautiful writer, and can weave words together in a way most writers cannot even dream of doing...though I do not think she is a splendid storyteller, and there is a huge difference between the two. Let me explain.As far as Khalid, he's on par with Christian Grey in the fact that he's supposed to be smoking hot but is about as attractive on the inside as a molding onion. For the first 3/4 of the book, his bland personality simply bored me, but by the last fourth I was screaming at him every time I turned a page. He seriously reminds me of a guy I used to know, who complained constantly about how horrible his life was and acted like he got the worst hand life dealt to anyone, just to make himself seem deep and interesting. It doesn't help that everything bad that happens in the book, the curse, all the girls dying, is still ESSENTIALLY HIS FAULT. Every single person that dies or gets hurt is a result of Khalid's selfish nature and self loathing, and he doesn't even care enough to even attempt to make himself likable in any sort of way, just goes around the palace with a woe-is-me attitude even though everyone else is suffering way more because of his actions. I don't get what the big craze is these days about "tortured, haunted" leading males in fiction who hurt women because they're "damaged." For me, it's really unattractive to see a guy waltzing around hurting people because somebody did him wrong in the past, and a woman chasing after him trying to tame the monster. Shazi's relationship with Khalid is on par with Stockholm syndrome and/or an abusive relationship. He literally almost chokes her to death, and she's still palling around with him.Shahrzad isn't much better. The most we know about her is that she can shoot a bow, she's angry all the time, and that she's trying to kill the guy who murdered her best friend, which she epically fails at for no reason because...I don't know...he's hot? I have no idea why Khalid and Shazi fell in insta-love, because I have no idea who they are as people in the first place. If you took them out of their terrible situation and put them in a normal life, they'd be complete strangers to you because there's nothing about them that makes them unique or different. For as beautiful as the descriptions are and the writing is, the characters are a blank canvas, only painted with a few strokes. There are so, SO many romantic and beautifully detailed scenes that would've stolen my breath away IF I could stop wishing the people I was reading about would just die already, and that's what really makes me upset. This book could've been a masterpiece, but the execution fell flat at the characterization. She did everything else right, but sadly, this crucial point causes the book to fail.It doesn't help that at every turn, there's a new character to memorize, and a new name to learn. For as short as this book is, there are way too many characters. I know I've made this mistake in my own writing, but I expect better from a book published by Putnam (though I really shouldn't...the Cahill Sisters Chronicles, also published by Putnam, also had an array of 20+ characters for 3 short books).It just makes me so mad things turned out this way. I was looking forward to this book for a long time, and it was such a big let down. The world, the writing, everything was so beautiful. But when you've got these distasteful, bland characters running around in this beautiful world, I really don't care to keep reading. Gonna think long and hard if I want to chance it with the sequel.

The Wrath and the Dawn is a YA retelling of 1001 Arabian Nights. Or, I should say, a retelling of the Arabian Nights' frame story, of a brave young woman who volunteers to be the bride of a serial killer ruler who murders his new brides the morning after their wedding night. Needless to say, this backstory is a little problematic for the modern reader. In "The Wrath and the Dawn", the nesting stories that the original is famous for take a back seat to the main story, a romance between the latest bride Sharzad, and the killer Caliph Khalid. There is a convoluted explanation for Khalid's mass murder spree which comes out late in the novel, but the main character's early attraction to a man who murdered her best friend (and many other young women) left a bad taste in my mouth. Overall, it was too reminiscent of a storyline where a rape victim falls in love with her assailant.The book has solid writing, and a lovely amount of detail that evokes a sense of medieval Arabic life and culture. What it lacks are characters that fit into that world. Sharzad comes across as more whiny than heroic, and her bizarre interactions with her handmaiden don't help. Khalid as a tortured romantic soul who -gosh darn it!-doesn't want to be a mass killer of young woman, didn't cut it for me. Sharzad's other heart throb, Tariq, who dashes around on an Arabian horse with a killer falcon, had more potential, but his character simply walked away from a major conflict at the end, leaving me confused. In fact, the second half of the book, between the unlikely actions of the characters and the improbable plot twists, left me bewildered. To make matters worse, the novel is actually book one of a trilogy, not a fun thing to discover as you turn the last few pages.Despite the fantastic background and setting, I'll be giving the rest of the series a pass. There's no explicit sex (in fact, I think some well-written sensual scenes might have added to this book) and a standard amount of sword slashing and violence.

I am not at all familiar with 1001 nights, so this story was entirely fresh for me. It was a bit slow to start, but not at all uneasy to read. I loved Shazi right from the start, though Khalid took some time to grow on me. I love the banter going on between Shazi and her handmaiden Despina. I was pretty confused by the insta-love and really could not see why Shazi was falling in love with Khalid, but by the end of the story I found myself saying "aww" to myself a lot. Which I really never do. Towards the end, I found some of the most beautiful words of love I've read in a while, so much that I had to stop and write them down in my reading journal. Now that I've finished the story, I'm totally sold on this romance and am pretty upset by what seems to be about to happen! I did find the chapters focusing on magic to be kind of strange and, well, just really weird. Hopefully that will be explained a little more in book 2. Overall, it wasn't perfect but I definitely enjoyed this story. It's a keeper in my library for sure.

As with Ian Gardiners other book, â€œThe Yompersâ€, this is a great read. You get history of the area, history and background of the conflict, insight on the people and their culture and of course the nitty gritty of the fighting itself. Again written from a ground commanders perspective, you get the feel of what is was like to be a grunt on the ground. As a former Army Infantryman, I could identify with what the author was writing about..the heat, dirt, fear and camaraderie.I gave this book 4 stars not because of content and writers style, the book gets 5 stars for that, but for the issues with the digital formatting. Throughout the book the letter â€œFâ€ is missing from the beginnings of some words; â€œfire, fine, etc.â€. It is manageable most of the time, but some words that are missing the â€œfâ€ throw you off for a moment. There are other missing letters occasionally as well.The book is great, just prepare for some grammar/syntax issues.

The Dhofar insurgency was without question of vastly greater strategic importance than the Vietnam war and yet hardly anyone has heard of it. This book does a fantastic job of covering this conflict at the strategic, tactical and human level. Given the current situation in Yemen now is a great time to read up on this conflict.Do order the actual book and not the Kindle edition. The Kindle edition was badly done with the letter "f" frequently being left out resulting in sentences such as "we drew enemy ire" or "they're thinking was deeply lawed". Very annoying.

I knew absolutely nothing about the war in Dhofar back in the 70s before reading this book, and now I know at least a little, though not as much as you would think.The book is at its best when it reads more like a piece of travel writing. Oman seems very interesting, both then and now. As a piece of war writing though, the book falls a bit flat.

Very useful first-hand account at tactical level of the Oman insurgency. It provides considerable details on how the Omanis and their British supporters conducted operations in the Dhofar, with a number of lessons applicable elsewhere. As with most such memoirs, there certainly are parts of the book that are more akin to "there I was", but overall it is a very good resource for students of counterinsurgency.

A soldier's account of an important, but largely unknown episode in the Cold War that protected the oil supply from the Persian Gulf for the West and gave birth to modern Oman.After deposing is father, with help from the British, the Sultan, Qaboos Bin Said Al Said, defeated a communist insurgency in the South of his country, by military means (again with help from the UK, Iran and others) as well as through enlightened domestic policies that have dramatically improved the lives of the Omani people. I read this book in parallel with "The Sultan in Oman," account by Jan Morris of her trip in the mid-1950s with Qaboos' father when he united the country.Anyone traveling to Oman (also recommended) should read both books. It will allow you to appreciate all the more how far this country has progressed in the past 50 years.

An easy read about one of the most important "small wars" of the 20th Century. Mr. Gardiner's narrative is self-effacing, humble, and inspiring. The story's action is centered on the famous "Hornbeam Line". Gardiner's description of the environment, the people, and the combatants on both sides is compelling to the point where one has to wonder why we don't know more about this strategically significant conflict. This was a resounding and hard-fought victory against a well equipped and trained Communist threat. If you want to read about how to lose a war, read any book about the American experience in Vietnam. If you want to gain insight on the trials and struggles on the path to achieving a victory in modern war, "In The Service of the Sultan" is a must-read.

A well written book by Ian Gardiner about a little known, and barely studied example of a successful counter-insurgency campaign against communist insurgents in the Dhofar region of Oman in the 1970s. Gardiner shares his first-hand accounts of what he experienced working with the Omani government, with the Dhofari people and the fighting against the communist insurgents in some of the most inhospitible terrain on the planet. From blistering heat, to monsoon-like rains, the British, Omanis and other forces fought against a communist-lead insurgency. Working both politically and militarily against the insurgents, the Dhofar campaign is a study in how to conduct a successful COIN effort.Gardiner's writing is both descriptive and easy to read. His writing style keeps the reader captivated, easily bringing you through his accounts of the insurgency and the efforts against it. Although you cannot lay the template for success directly over current counterinsurgency operations but the lessons learned, the political/military approaches and the timeless lessons of working with the host nation (Oman) remain valuable for today's fight.

Excellent read. Tells the story from boots on the ground. No BS from the author. As a combat veteran myself, I know when it is real and the battles are depicted honestly and from a professional perspective.Having served in Vietnam, I was not aware of this area of conflict, very informative.

About the Author

Don Troiani’s Civil War paintings and limited edition prints hang in the finest museum and private collections, including the Smithsonian, West Point, the Pentagon, Gettysburg National Park, the US Army War College, and the National Civil War Museum. His artwork has been featured extensively on A&E, History, Discovery, and Military channels, and Don regularly serves as military advisor on major motion pictures. He is on the board of the Anne Brown Library and the Civil War Trust. He has been awarded the Meritorious Service Award of the US National Guard and designed Civil War battlefield coins for the US Mint. Don received his art training from the PA Academy of Fine Arts and the NY City Art Student’s League. He lives in Southbury, CT. Earl J. Coates is a native of Ashland, Ohio and now lives near Gettysburg, Pa. He is a lifelong student of the American Civil War specializing in arms and uniforms and has contributed to, and published, numerous articles and books on the subject. His friendship with Don Troiani began in the early 1970s. Since then he has provided research assistance on uniforms and equipment which has helped make Mr. Troiani’s work known worldwide for accuracy and detail.Mr. Coates is a graduate of Loyola College with a dual major in United States and Russian history. He served three years in the Army Security Agency and had over thirty years’ service with the National Security Agency. He retired from the NSA as a senior historian and was the first curator of the Agency’s National Cryptologic Museum. An avid shooter, he has been a member of North-South Skirmish Association since 1970, serving eight years as National Commander. In 1978 he helped form the “Friends of the National Parks at Gettysburg” and served for over six years as its president. He was also president of Maryland Arms Collectors Association and appears as a regular on Maryland Public Television’s weekly show “Chesapeake Collectables” as appraiser of Firearms and Sword. Mr. Coates has been a proud member of the Company of Military Historians since 1962.

When I ordered this book, I thought I would be disappointed. I thought it would simply be a compilation of Troiani's previous books on the American Civil War. But when I received it, I was pleasantly surprised; much of the content is new. The book is divided into two parts: Confederate Soldiers, and Union Soldiers, with a very good study of Union Corps Badges inserted between the two. There are about 50 Troiani paintings included, about one-third of which I have never seen in a previous book. My personal favorite is that of a soldier belonging to Company I, 11th Mississippi, who wears a uniform made of red jeans cloth: Red frock coat, red trousers, and a red kepi.The book is packed with color photos of original uniforms and equipment (but no weapons), and the interesting text provides valuable insights and anecdotal descriptions, such as "the pretty large sprinkling of blue pants" worn by the 61st Georgia Infantry at Gettysburg.If you are interested in Civil War uniforms and equipment, this book will be a very nice addition to your library. Recommended.

Great addition to my CW books collection. A+ as expected from Troiani, with a non weapons themed book. A large amount of his CW Collection was sold back in 2015 to the U.S. Army Center of Military History for future display. The artwork, layout & CW military pieces from the Smithsonian and other collections is terrific

The artifacts and text in this book make it a MUST HAVE for all Civil War collectors, enthusiasts, modelers, wargamers and anyone else that enjoys a quality book on the subject. The Troiani figure studies ( many not seen in print before ) are the icing on the cake and are a great compliment to the artifacts.

This is a beautiful book. I bought it for my son-in-law, who is a history buff. He really liked it and thought it was very well written. The pictures are marvelous and the whole book is very high quality.

Don Troiani is simply the best artist on the Civil War. Very accurate representations.

Excellent study written and illustrated by the leading experts in the field. A must have addition to any serious library on Civil War uniforms.

Don Troiani and his fellow historians wonâ€™t disappoint you ! This book features numerous articles of clothing and equipment as well as a unit patches section . This along with great visuals makes for a solid book.

Another fine volume with all new pictures, full of detailed information. This will be another definitive source on uniforms of the American Civil War.

This was a good ready reference map of the DC area and is fairly accurate for the most part. I did notice the METRO stops are not all accurate. I found several to be off. Example is the Smithsonian stop, which the map shows actually on the National Mall, but is really located at the Northeast corner of the Agriculture Dept Bldg at the intersection of Independence Ave SW and 12 Street SW. I am not sure if they are placing the dots at the actual METRO stop underground and that is causing the inaccuracies, but I believe most people want to know where the escalator entry/exit point is for the stop. Other than that, it is a great resource for planning and I would buy it again.

Does not show all of London. We stayed in Kensington and it is not even on the map. Disappointed .

Great map, especially like that it is laminated. Used it five days straight in DC, very helpful. Particularly useful is the map of the metro system.

Shows the main streets great, the smaller street also, and is very durable.

So helpful when I was in DC. Walked from the hotel to the Lincoln Memorial and back.

This map is fine as long as all you care about are the tourist areas. It is not a full map of Washington.
