I highly recommend this map! My husband and I just completed the John Muir Trail with this map last week 7/12/15. We opted for this map because we went with 2 other people who had the Tom Harrison map set so we hoped that between the two different maps we would have all the information we could possibly need. Truth be told, we looked at the Tom Harrison map maybe twice? This map was easier to follow (no individual sheets that got out of order and blown around), easier to read (relevant mileage points, accurate mileage and accurate elevation), and easier to find trails off the JMT for emergency situations (the 2 people we were hiking with needed to leave the trail due to injury and we dealt with some crazy weather that caused many to leave the trail entirely, we helped one find her way out with our map). The front two pages have an overview elevation profile and each map page had a more detailed profile which we found extremely helpful in planning out our days. In addition, we had an alternate starting point (Glacier Point/4 Mile Trail) and the Tom Harrison map does not cover this area. The Tom Harrison map was the only one recommended to us, but, I am so glad we ended up with this one. It is slightly heavier, but you could cut out some of the informative pages to cut weight or cut and throw out pages as you go as some do with the Tom Harrison set (our scale showed 3.1 once exactly untouched). Unfortunately, it got lost in our hotel room... we will be buying a second one just to have around!

WARNING: not for hikers going Northbound, and stepping off from Cottonwood Lakes / Horseshoe Ranch trailhead. This guide starts at Mount Whitney and does not include maps for any trailheads south of Mount WhitneyPros: (1) perfect for SOBO hikers or NOBO hikers starting at whitney portal. It has everything you will need and you should mark it up with a Sharpie with additional information (2) waterproof and rip-proof. It lasted the entire trip through several storms. Excellent in this regardCons: (1) not for anyone going NOBO from Cottonwood or Horseshoe areas. You will need an app or a printout to assist you; (2) pens and pencils don't work on it. Even some sharpies erased. You will need a conventional permanent Sharpie to mark it up.

This was the only paper guide that I took with me on my John Muir Trail thru hike, along with the Guthook app on my phone. I can't believe how many people on the trail carry huge heavy guidebooks. This map is all you need, especially if you plan on doing side trails or alternate routes while hiking the JMT. There was one 1 mile trail off of the Bearcreek Cutoff Trail that we couldn't find at all even though it was marked on the National Geographic map. The trail was so old and overgrown, that we just followed our compass south for a mile until we found the San Joaquin River which led us to the intersecting trail which eventually brought us to Florence Lake. If we had not been carrying this topo map, there would have been no way to figure out our location. Thanks Nat Geo!

The NatGeo map guide served us SO well on our SoBo JMT hike this summer! We used this in planning the hike and also on the trail itself, and it excelled in both areas.For planning, we used the established campsites shown on the map to help us plan where we generally wanted to camp, and the elevation profiles were helpful as a quick reference to make sure our days weren't unreasonably strenuous, and that our itinerary positioned us well to get over passes early in the day. Of course, we strayed a bit from our planned itinerary once we were actually out on the trail, but the planning we did with this map gave us a great starting point.The map was the most helpful on the trail itself. We used it primarily for quick-checks on elevation (seeing how much more we had to climb), finding good places to camp (looking at both listed campsites and also relatively flat stretches along the trail), and mileage checks when we reached junctions or any other points with marked mileage. When we needed more precision, we used our GPS app (Gaia), which worked well in conjunction with the map. We didn't go off trail, so we didn't ever have to rely on the NatGeo map for any map and compass navigation. We kept the map in the outside pocket of a pack without extra protection, and there were no tears or faded ink by the end of the three weeks.I haven't seen the Harrison maps, so I can't make a comparison. But this NatGeo map guide met all of our needs, and we saw many other hikers using it along the trail. I'd recommend it to anyone doing the JMT. Happy trails!

A very nice set of maps and information about the John Muir Trail. In the end I wound up not taking these on my hike and used the Harris maps instead, but I did read the information that was included in the book and it does provide good information.

National Geographic maps are equally as good as Tom Harrison's, and I have used on several hikes. So, it comes down to preferences for style, details important to the hiker, map size and detailed colors and accompanying lettering, which are important to many hikers.Thank you and saludos, Rolando

Very detailed. Has good contours and topography on it. Sometimes I like a fold out map but this works just fine. Made very well. Have it for about a year now. Looks like it will last a while.

Really a fantastic waterproof pamphlet-style map of the JMT. So many little notations, icons, markings, etc. on this map. Can fit in your pocket since it's as wide as a shirt pocket. A bit heavy for a map, but it's 48 pages total (front and back cover, and each page half counted as 1 page). Total of 34 pages of map (17 maps, each takes up 2 half-pages), and there are 12 pages of very useful information in the front of this map pack including grids of distances between trail junctions, notable map points, etc. The printing is so clear, and the topo is very easy to read and understand. Great color shading and high definition. I'm going to be bringing this with me on the JMT this summer as my primary map.

"Amusing Ourselves to Death" is an amazingly written and well-argued book. As Postman notes: In the Victorian Era (mid-late 1800s), novelist Charles Dickens had as much fame as The Beatles in 1960, Michael Jackson in 1980, or Brad Pitt in 2014. The farm boy in the late 1700s carried a pamphlet of Thomas Paine's writings in his back pocket. Today, school-children carry iphones with pictures of Eminem (boy) or Taylor Swift (girl). In the mid-1800s, Abraham Lincoln and Stephan A. Douglas debated in public FOR HOURS on the dire issues of their time. Today, Barack Obama and Mitt Romney have bite-sized debates where one side speaks for 1 minute and the other side gets a 30-second rebuttal..Clearly, the people then were different from the people now in terms of mainstream intelligence. The reason, Postman argues, is that the people in Dickens' era were children of "The Age of Typography," and the people today (us) are the children of "The Age of Show Business," or "The Age of Television." Reading was life to people in the older days; watching television is life to us now. And television, however entertaining, cannot be anything but sheer junk because it works through images, sensationalism, and emotional gratification. Writing, on the other hand, requires patience, detachment, memory, and reason. The result is that we are dumber than our ancestors. Incredulous? Pick up the book and let Postman prove it to you..This book was written in 1985, but don't be fooled; it still wields enormous relevance today -- The chapter titled, "Peek-a-Boo-World" as well as the "Information-to-action-ratio" theory outlined in it are particularly pertinent regarding the modern-day use of the internet, especially with portable laptops, tablets, and cellphones. With those gadgets, we have become, in short, a nation buried in triviality, as Postman predicted. Furthermore, television viewership today has not decreased with the rise of the internet, iphones, and such. On the contrary, studies show that we still watch as much television as before, despite the alarmingly rising rate of electronic use. In this book, Postman focuses on politics, religion, education, and the news. These, he says, are serious topics that are downgraded to mere amusement because television, by design, works by making everything amusing. In effect, we come to expect everything in life to be entertaining when, in actuality, some things must be endured. Again, I urge you to read this book carefully. I've read it four times. It's ideas have allowed me to wean myself away from television and on to typography. Let it have the same effect on you.

A truer Title has never been written. Published in 1985, Mr. Postman predicted with depressing accuracy the declining intellectual arc of the United States. While it leans towards pedantry on occasion (I do too often), he exposes the dangers in our insatiable demand for gratification, the faster the better. He could have written this book tomorrow, and now I'm even more depressed.

The title of this book is appealing, especially for the dissidents or mavericks who would be contended to find views in this book that rebel against the contemporary societal norms. The coverage this book got after 2016 US primaries has further fueled the interest of those who are looking for gratification to find arguments that confirm to their views of the contemporary world. This book at best presents quips and quotes to summarize the thoughts that hitherto might have simmered in a mind such as ‘How television staged the world becomes the model for how the world is to be staged,’ or ‘Television is our culture’s principle mode of knowing itself,’ but those that were not succinctly expressed. All that this book does is present an aha moment, something on the lines of ‘I knew it!’ Otherwise, any serious explorer of this topic should start with 1984 by George Orwell or Brave New World by Aldous Huxley instead of picking up this text.Finally, this book builds its arguments on examples with a little reference to research. It presents opinions derived from observation; observation of elections, religion, advertisement, schools and news. While a large portion of population may actually be affected by these examples, this book fails to talk about the valuable side of mass media. At best it presents half the picture, the picture that’s dark. Not to say that it’s wrong, a reader should exert caution and exhibit judgement in jumping to conclusions.

To their own benefit, the highest goal of the majority of "news" providers is to convince you to be a faithful member of their audience.3. Mass media communicates in images and sound bites. Such "news" providers create their biased views of reality and attempt to convince their audience members to buy into it.6. Many folks have long ago stopped thinking critically about what is presented as "truth in the media." Instead, they have latched on to a feel-good moral position that negates their personal responsibility to legitimately research history, context, facts, and moral/political/social principles.Are we willing to do our own homework, or will we remain content to passively receive what is fed to us by commercial "news" providers?
