What a phenomenal story!I was enthralled by every page, from her early vision for a medical clinic in one of San Francisco's poorest neighborhoods, to the discovery that behind many ailments lay the same biological root cause, our bodies' normal reaction to the stresses of Adverse Childhood Experiences, to the stories with strategies to buffer the difficulties of life for your child (or your inner child!), to her call for universal screening -- a fantastic book, by someone doing amazing, world-changing work. Brilliant and compassionate, scientific yet approachable, deeply personal and still profoundly universal.Main take-aways:* Your entire genetic code has some flexibility built in, and will be expressed differently based on your environment.* Adverse Childhood Experiences are nearly universal, across incomes and groups.* Having a large number of ACEs correlates with huge health impacts: twice as likely to develop heart disease and cancer, 3.5 times as likely to develop COPD, twice the odds of hospitalization for an autoimmune disease (such as arthritis, lupus, diabetes, celiac), and a greater risk of asthma, allergies, migraines, fibromyalgia, reflux, bronchitis, ulcers, "and the list goes on." (p. 73,181)* Neuroplasticity means epigenetics are treatable, and the stress response can often be brought back under control through therapy, meditation, and exercise.* Universal screening would help many people understand their bodies and break the generational cycle by becoming effective buffer/advocates for their children.

Studies show that 67-83% of us (This includes every human being on earth, too, since the studies have been replicated worldwide with the same results.) have at least one toxic stress issue (Adverse Childhood Experience or ACE) in our lives and from 12-17% of us have 4 or more of the possible 10 stressors currently defined. For example, if we have 4 of these experiences we are 10 times more likely to attempt suicide. With 6 or more, we are nearly 24 times more likely to attempt suicide! It is so accurate that it is considered "doseable" which is explained in the book. Auto-immune diseases, addictions, risky lifestyle behaviors, asthma, cardiovascular diseases, fibromyalgia, learning difficulties (ADHD is often mistakenly treated when it is actually issues caused by ACEs.), commitment issues, and many more health and social issues are rooted in these ACEs.The score we have is recorded in our nervous system and DNA which affects every aspect of our body's functions. Together, these factors will decide our health, job success, marriage and parenting success and even our longevity because of the power they have over the systems of our body. As the author points out, though, there are simple, non-medical methods of counteracting much of their effects through mindfulness, relationships, sleep, exercise, stress buffering caregivers and so on. Simple lifestyle changes can make a big difference in our entire lives if we will follow the advice given in this book. The author doesn't waste time discussing or blaming our parents for the way they have damaged us since that isn't the point. She does show how the effects of ACEs are multi-generational, though, and then gives hope by showing how they can be overcome and stopped through conscious effort on our part.Dr. Harris has impeccable credentials for writing this book and does so with the same expertise she demonstrates in her TEDMed talk on the same subject. This book is up-to-date since it was released in January of 2018. She uses good science and connects it with anecdotes from her pediatric medical practice in SF's poorest neighborhood. Her writing style is engaging and informative, scientifically informational while still being understandable. I absolutely wanted to love this book based on all the 5 star reviews. And the first chapter does suck you in and really gets your interest. But be aware that a lot of the book contains a lot of scientific info, which is fine, and a lot of the writer's own experiences in researching these links. However, I was hoping for some practical info on how to treat the overstimulated nervous system. Overall worth a read, but I just can't justify more than 3 stars.

Despite his attempts at objectivity, the book was careful, in fact too careful, to insult the sensibilites of some parties. Salibi attempeted to trudge his way through the sensitivity of many historical controversaies in an attempt to be fair to all parties concerned. FOr those expecting a critical account of history, do not expect much. Jordan-that country conjured out of sand and hills by Winston Churchill at the Cairo conference in March 1921--has always had a question mark over its existence. For the first thirty years, King 'Abdullah tried to trade Amman, his backwater capital, for Damascus or Jerusalem. King Husayn struggled during four decades to fend off many predators, including Gamal Abdel Nasser and the PLO. As recently as July 1994, he stated that Jordan "is susceptible to fragmentation." Salibi, professor of history at the American University of Beirut, provides an excellent basis for grappling with these fundamental questions about the Jordanian polity. In two of the book's most important chapters, he chronicles the Hashemite dynasty which produced the kings of Jordan and tells the history of the territory that Churchill would eventually make into Jordan. The Modern History of Jordan is perhaps the one and only source about the history of this country ever since it was formed under the leadership of Hashemite King Abdullah I.Like all of his works, Salibi traces with his meticulous eye and encyclopedic knowledge the story of this country since antiquity even though according to Salibi, the most important part in the formation of Jordan came recently when France and Britain divided the region into their spheres of influence after the conclusion of WWI in 1919.Salibi's style is particularly entertaining and flows in a scientific and intriguing manner. The book is money well-spent and fits in the libraries of both history experts as well as average readers.

I read this book as preparatory material for a study abroad program in Jordan, and was initially pleased with how informative it is. While it is informative as a general history, the real purpose of this book is to be an apology for the Hashemites. When Salibi isn't actively seeking to bolster the image of Hussein and the Hashemites in general, he is downplaying the significance of internal struggle and strife within Jordan. For example, compare accounts of the 1960s in Jordan in Salibi to other account. What Salibi describes as minor domestic troubles are described in other accounts as the Hashemites nearly being overthrown. He also, to my mind, shamefully neglects the full scope of the Palestinian issue as it has played out in Jordanian politics and identity-formation. His treatment of Black September discounts the Palestinian perspective while attempting to say the Hashemite's brutal repression really wasn't all that bad.I have had "A History of Jordan" by Philip Robins highly recommended to me, however I have not read it. It is likely to be a more objective account of the history of Jordan. If you do choose to read The Modern History of Jordan do so with a critical eye towards the goals of Salibi, which appears to be proselytizing for the Hashemites. It is also important that you supplement your reading on Jordan with other books, such as Joseph Massad's extraordinary "Colonial Effects" and Marc Lynch's "State Interests and Public Spheres"While I certainly don't want to resort to ad hominom attacks on Kamal Salibi, I do question the rigor of his scholarship given the apologetic nature of "The Modern History of Jordan" and his controversial and discounted theory that historical Israel was in fact Yemen. He appears to be a scholar with an agenda, and it shines through very clearly in his work.

This is a fabulous book. Iâ€™m a country boy. Both of my grandmothers canned. And my mother canned. (Thatâ€™s what Victory Gardens were all about in WWII. Remember them?) And, since retirement 12 years ago, Iâ€™ve grown a garden myself and canned. But, where I have 100 canning jars, Daisy has 500. I have the old cookbooks, dating back to my great-grandmother, as well as the canning manuals. But Daisy provides recipes and tips that Iâ€™ve never seen before. Plus an easy, readable writing style. And honest answers. Reusable lids? Daisy says, â€œI have a confession . . . I have tried reusable lids and I really, really donâ€™t like them.â€ Then she tells why. That alone saved me a lot more than the price of the book, I gotta tell ya.

Food preservation is quickly becoming a passion with me, so I read a LOT of resources on the subject. But I rarely read much of the narrative. Too eager to get to the step-by-step instructions... But Daisy's introduction, with its "write as if you're talking" style, drew me in immediately. I read every word from beginning to end! Other instructional authors should TAKE NOTE! The recipes look fabulous and I can't wait to try them. Plus it was fun to note that I'm already using some of the techniques described. I won't be embarrassed about canning all my leftovers as leftover soup. I'll be looking for other books by Daisy!

This book was all I wanted, and some things I didn't even know I needed! Not only does it emphasize SAFE canning practices, it does it in a manner that makes it easy to prepare ready-to-eat canned meals, assuring that all jars contain consistent amounts of product. You aren't going to have one jar of stew with mostly potatoes, and one with mostly meat. I have not tried any of the actual recipes just yet, as I just received the book a week ago. However, I have ear-marked about half the book and am eager to start! My garden will be expanded this year, and I will be canning until my heart is content!In addition, the book is full of healthy meals...you don't have to wonder what is in your food when you can it yourself. You will know!I did see one error in the book on a chili recipe that calls for 4 cups of ground cumin (for 7 quarts), but that is the only thing I noticed that I was disappointed in.You don't have to be a 'Prepper' to appreciate this canning book!

I love this book! I read it all in one sitting because I couldnâ€™t seem to put it down! There are so many ideas and things I never thought to can before that now I canâ€™t wait to try these recipes out. This by far, is the best â€œ preppingâ€ book I have bought yet.

I did not really dislike, I was disappointed I paid that amount of money for this book. I am sure there will be something I can use at some time. All the information could be found in other cookbooks, especially Ball Canning. Nothing new here. All the pages are black and white. I am a seasoned prepper and canner, so I appreciate the effort on the part of the author, but this is definitely for a brand new beginner. One that does not have access to other canning books and a computer to look up questions. Thanks for your effort though.

I have wanted this book for so long....Lots of 'SIMPLE" canning if you are an ingredient canner...BUT there is so much more...perfect
