I loved this well written and beautifully presented book. David Coggins, aside from being a talented wordsmith, is an arbiter of taste and style. Though the book is geared toward men who already have a penchant for the finer things, there is plenty of advice here for everyone (women too), especially when taken as "big picture" (the tipping section, as pointed out in another review, is about tipping well in general, no matter the situation, don't get caught in the semantics). The book reinforced many of my own feelings, while calling me out at the same time. David is never preachy in his approach, often admitting his own shortcomings. It's a fun, quick read (I completely finished it on a single flight), filled with great insight that challenges modern conventions of what it is to be a person in a society. It made me nostalgic for a time I've never lived in — maybe one that never really was. I immediately made an appointment with a barber to tame my beard. Highly recommended.

***THIS BOOK WAS RECEIVED FROM A GOODREADS GIVEAWAY***In a world becoming increasingly modern and digital, it’s a little odd to find a book like Men and Manners, especially since its weird page colors make it seem like it was written in the 1950’s. While this book did have some pieces of advice, it seemed to be as specifically tailored (like a high-end tuxedo) to Manhattan, New York, instead of being general advice for men in Manhattan, Kansas. Many of the locations and businesses explicitly mentioned in this book were complete mysteries to me since I don’t live in New York City. These references made it seem like the manners advice wasn’t relevant to me at all.While I would have appreciated more thorough explanations of why particular manners should exist, this book seemed to be mostly filled with anecdotes from east coast elites about their opinion on certain matters. Sure, some of the people who provided their views were experts in their fields, but it would be better for the target audience (which I’m assuming is young men) to have an explanation as to why your shoe color should match your belt color. From my viewpoint, this book seemed like a lot of young Baby Boomers / older Gen-X-ers subtly complaining about Millennials and their habits/trends.Despite the apparent bias on the part of the writer(s), this book did contain many pieces of useful advice, even if a lot of it—if not most of it—boiled down to common sense and common decency. Another aspect I seemed to notice with this book is that it is also aimed at the moderately wealthy, especially considering all the expensive hotels, restaurants, and businesses mentioned. I don’t think I’ve ever stayed at a hotel with a doorman. Consequently, it seems that manners are only available to the rich when it’s the less-wealthy among us that often need the gentle nudging toward good manners.A primer for young men living in New York City, I give Men and Manners 3.0 stars out of 5.

I checked this book out at the library a long time ago and it completely changed the way I look at houses. Read it and you'll understand why old houses are always more interesting than new ones.In my case, I bought this book again because I'm planning to build my house in a couple of months and I don't want it to be yet another house that falls apart in 20-30 years because it's useless and/or ugly.Stewart Brand is thorough and observant, and he has a fascinating perspective on the built world as it relates to time. I will be reading more of his work as soon as I have the time.

Amazing that a book published in the mid-nineties is still garnering regular reviews - this says something about the enduring appeal and quality of Brand's work. I first bought a copy of this book in the mid-nineties, and I've been handing them out to colleagues ever since. To me the book speaks beautifully about architecture and how our built environment evolves, but that's not its real appeal to me. As a computer scientist, I'm fascinated by the more general lessons that can be drawn from this book about complex systems, the interplay between their temporal layers, and how understanding this can lead to better systems designs in a host of fields. I've applied these lessons in areas from software engineering to organisational and cultural change, and my sense is that this book's importance -- like Alexander's Timeless Way of Building -- extends far beyond architecture. If you're involved in evolving organisations, software, towns or buildings, you'll not regret taking the time to read it.

This book is obviously not for everyone, but if you are interested enough in the topic to be reading the reviews, then you will be happy with the purchase. The Author tends to ramble a bit at times, and he makes repeats a few points more than needed, but so far I have gotten a lot out of this, and it has change the way I think about buildings, evolution, and how to judge the merits of a building's design.I would strongly encourage anyone thinking of building a house to get this book.

Brand opens the door to the history of renovations, adjustments, and satisficing we do with our buildings. We built the building -- but what if it doesn't fit? What if the halls are too narrow, the atrium too echoey, and the lecture halls tucked out of the way? Why does the roof leak? What happens when technology changes and you have to retrofit data connections into a 300 year old building? Ever try to make a 300 year old building ADA compliant? Brand explores the history of building design, the changes owners make to their buildings, the strategies buildings take in longevity (flexible vs historic monument), and the 6 layers that make up a facility: Site, Structure, Services, Space Plan, Stuff, and Skin. An excellent and enjoyable study in how buildings are designed and how they change.

I am an acoustical and systems design consultant who specializes in worship and performing arts facilities, and use this book regularly in my practice. I have found no better resource for introducing the facility planning "layperson" to the enormous blind-spot that many in the architectural design and construction profession have regarding the relevance of buildings to the functional needs that should define their design, as well as the ongoing process of maintaining this relevance over time.While highly specialized rooms such as auditoria do not usually lend themselves to significant modification over time, or to strategies such as "loose fit," Brand's advice about the risk of architectural experimentation in the fundamental form of most buildings is spot on. This book is an extremely engaging read, and also serves as an excellent introduction to other key literature on architectural programming, scenario planning, the evolution of the architectural profession, and so forth.As other reviewers have suggested, anyone who lives or works in a building can profit from reading this book. This reviewer lives in Ventura County, California where the Hells Angeles have done some long term damage to my town. Ventura County is mentioned often in this book, Southern California specially the Inland Empire has been the hub for such big name MC's such as the Vagos, the HA's and yes the Mongols. When Billy St. John as he called in this book infiltrated this organization he certainly did many So Cal residents a favor, as they were causing significant havoc in the region.If I'am not mistaken I saw a program on the National Geographic Channel with Bill Queen further going into detail as the events of this book. A lot of this material was used in Kerrie Droban's Vagos, Mongols, Outlaws and was also used in Gangland Undercover.As far as the book is concerned it is probably one of the most interesting pieces of literature I have read in the past decade. Which is saying much since this book is starting to become dated but will ultimately have some importance in the years to come as we as a nation face some challenges. Bill Queen has certainly led an amazing life serving this nation in Vietnam, the mid west apprehending white supremacist organizations. and even the Mongols MC. To be frank i'am surprised he missed the Waco incident. In this book he keeps the reader informed on the inner workings of the ATF Undercover department and the RICO stature. I dont want to spoil anymore please read this book and enjoy!

An absolute page-turner. This is a story of criminal motorcycle gangs and how they operate. It's no surprise that their members are mired in all kinds of criminal activity, ruthless, and capable of unspeakable acts. The surprising parts are the high degree of organization of the gangs (officers, by-laws, the whole bit), and the camaraderie and loyalty among gang members who otherwise aren't really nice people. Queen's ability not only to infiltrate one of these gangs, but to rise to a high level position, is more than impressive. He had to repeatedly find ways to avoid taking drugs and committing various crimes without arousing suspicion, maintain a charade in the face of a gang who was borderline paranoid about being infiltrated by cops, rely on the ATF to set up a fake identity that would fool the gang, and give up nearly all semblance of any normal life outside of his undercover assignment. Trust me, you will enjoy this story.

This is, I believe, the best book that I have read about outlaw motorcycle clubs, and I have read many. William Queen was an ATF agent who infiltrated the vicious Mongol Motorcycle Club by becoming a full-patched Mongol. This is no mean feat, as the book very carefully and accurately explains. No other book I have read does a comparable job to this book in taking the reader inside one of these clubs (and the Mongols are arguably the worst of the group) and showing what this strange world is really all about.The author reveals that the Mongol M/C is, or at least was in the early 2000s, at its heart a criminal enterprise. According to the author the Mongol life made an orderly work life unlikely, and only a few members of the authors' chapter held regular jobs. Barfights and drugs were the order of the day.Reading this book the reader gains an appreciation for the frightful strain that an undercover agent must undergo. The author was always in danger of summary execution by the Mongols, should they discover his activities. And the ATF itself appeared unappreciative of his sacrifices, as he became isolated from the internal politics of the ATF and perhaps largely forgotten by his peers.Overall, this one is well worth reading. RJB.

Stark (Timeless Healing, LJ 5/15/96) has written a readable self-help guide for brides-to-be and newlyweds who are trying to adjust to this often anxiety-ridden passage in life and to solve the consequent identity crisis. Chapters touch on wedding postpartum, handling money squabbles, falling prey to stereotypes, timing pregnancies, and communication and criticism in a marriage. The text is interspersed with comments from the 50 (mostly white, middle-class) women whom Stark surveyed and interviewed. The result is a "feel good" book whose aim is to reassure newlyweds that their fears and anxieties are normal. Much of it reads like a woman's magazine article, offering somewhat simplistic advice: "breath deeply, and believe that your venture into love will succeed." But Stark does have a clear, readable style and a reassuring sincerity in drawing from her own life as well as others. A bibliography of about 14 books (mostly other self-help books) follows the text. I thought this book was slightly helpful and had a fairly good perspective. It is a little fluffy-- advice is really only given in a few bullet points with a few scant examples, but if you were in the same situation it might help lighten up your perspective. I am reading this after being married for 2 years and found that I had gone through pretty much every situation mentioned, which was nice. But if I read it at the time it wouldn't have given as much help as I would have wanted.That being said, I am in her target audience (been single many years,living on my own, professional, married in 30s). If you are not in this group a lot of the struggles will not apply to you. Also if you are not in the independent, feminist, I'm doing it my way, you can't make me your little wifey kind of attitude, this book will seem weird. If you are more traditional, have long wanted to be an old fashioned wife, or don't seek the "equal partnership" she keeps talking about, this book isn't really for you. Its more for the later-married-feminist to read so she won't feel bad about how she's going crazy being newly married and having to share for the first time lol. I'd only recommend this book to a few of my friends and just for entertainment really.

I will be honest and say there are not many books out there (that I could find) about the emotional transitions of the engagement/wedding process. Of the three books that I read (the others being "the conscious bride" and "emotionally engaged") this book felt the most grounded to me. Probably because outside of the first few chapters the author does not talk about wedding planning. Stark really focuses on recognizing what emotions we may be going through and some ideas for dealing with it all. The truth is, that for me, the best part of the book is that it reminds me that I don't have to walk into my marriage knowing how everything is going to turn out (who's going to do the dishes, take out the garbage, how often will we have dinner together). With time, patience and talking my husband-to-be and I will figure it all out. To me, this is immensely helpful.Just a note on the poor reviews:*The author does not condone a fling or adulterous behavior. As far as I understood, she was sharing one bride's experience and that bride seemed to regret it. Either way, this is one line of the entire book and did not stop me from reading the whole book.*Stark does talk about her own marriage a lot. She's sharing her own experience and I take in all she says with a grain of salt.*As for whinny... maybe I don't see it because the other two books gave so much more permission to act out, but I didn't see that here. I only saw Stark trying to sort through her emotions and trying to make sense of them.

I love this book. Honestly, I don't think I would have understood what I was getting myself into had I not read this before I got married. I really do think this is a must read for all brides to be. I bought one for my best friend who just got married, and I intend on buying a copy for every single friend of mine who decides to tie the knot. WORTH THE READ! It came in promptly and was in better condition than I imagined it would be. Very happy with my purchase.

I didn't find this book helpful and returned it. A lot of the information I found in here was personal experiences, ideas of what to watch for, and some general ideas of what to talk about before the wedding. It's like a "be prepared for this in the wedding/marriage." The reason I didn't find it helpful is it was full of all the things we always hear about being a bride and wife. There wasn't really "new" information in it. And while it sort of addresses how to combat some of the things that come up, I just didn't feel it helped me in any way.

This is a good book for those of you women about to get married and feeling a little overwhelmed by all the changes about to take place in your life. Marriage is an identity change for sure and this is a good way to ease your mind. I had no doubts about my decision to get married, I was just overwhelmed by whether or not I had what it took to be a good wife (and what does that mean anyway?). This book made me see that my anxieties were normal, but that I could totally get through this and everything was going to work out. As a postscript, I have been married for more than 2 years now and it has unquestionably been the best experience of my life. Seems funny that I was so worried back then, but I was!

I was very disappointed in this book. I didn't think it was funny or shared funny stories and couldn't relate to any of it at all. I can't even remember the highlights of the book and I just finished it last night ! I thought the advice was sketchy and incomplete, there are dozens upon dozens of references to other books that made me feel as if I should be reading those books instead of this one. I thought I would feel enlightened after this book but it didn't offer that at all. It has a few interesting points but only dabbles on them before shifting to a new topic that seems off the track. I felt the author was stretching in some of her stories - she had a story and would mold her story into some sort of advice that didn't seem to really fit. It was difficult to get through, I found myself skipping entire pages just to get to the point.I'm getting married in a month and don't feel as if this book offered me any insight to what is on the horizon for me.

I hate to be the lone dissenter, but this book really didn't help me sort out my pre-wedding thoughts. A few months before my wedding, I began to feel somewhat nervous about leaving my single life behind and "becoming another person." I bought this book hoping that it would offer advice and some reassurance that my feelings were shared by other brides.While it did indeed indicate that my sudden identity concerns were common, I found that most of Stark's advice was based on her own marriage, with a few tidbits thrown in from a few interviews she had done with several young brides--although most of it is common sense. I found myself often thinking that I was reading Stark's autobiography.That said, it does have some good pointers and a few good stories that a lot of brides can relate to.
