Ken Norman has been growing bonsai for over forty years. He and his wife Ann have an important collection of bonsai permanently displayed at Leonardslee Gardens, West Sussex, England. Ken is a past Chairman of both the Federation of British Bonsai Societies (FOBBS) and the Friends of the National Bonsai Collection (FNBC). He is also a founder member, past Chairman and current President of the Sussex Bonsai Group and has been involved in organizing national and international bonsai conventions. Yes, I like it. Apparently I liked it so much, I (unknowingly) bought it again. The first time I purchased this book, it was a beautiful coffee table book under another name: "Growing Bonsai: A practical encyclopedia". The first edition was exceptionally beautiful and just as fully informative as the second. For the price, I do suggest this instructional publication. Just don't accidentally purchase it again unless you, like me, have a nephew who is also passionate about bonsai and doesn't have it yet. =).The difference between this version of the book and the first is that this version is 1) smaller dimensions 2) a lower price It gives the same descriptions and knowledge (which is far more comprehensive than average how-to bonsai book). The only difference I can see is that the reader misses the wonderful experience of the larger photographs. I don't know if the table-top version of this book is still in active publication. THIS DIFFERENCE IS THE ONLY REASON I GAVE THIS BOOK A 4-STAR RATING INSTEAD OF A 5-STAR.. For an all-around guide into the world of bonsai, this is the book I would suggest. The only more informative source would be a book on specific bonsai species.

This book is an excellent addition to my bonsai library of 10 books or so. Starts with basic information and proceeds to more advanced information about bonsai, potting, pruning, selection of shrubs and trees, fertilizing, etc. I'm a long time bonsai enthusiast, but would not describe myself as an expert. I raise bonsai for fun. The book introduced me to trees and shrubs (Jade plant, for instance) that I never thought before could be cultivated as bonsai. Filled with beautiful photos of bonsai. Highly recommended whatever your level of expertise in bonsai.

A Cornucopia of Bonsai Wisdom Most bonsai books have one or several major flaws.1. They simplify the subject to the point of being insulting to the reader.2. The book contains few or no color photographs.3. The step-by-step process has major gaps.4. The book is too short to be helpful.5. The book is ambiguous about the subject as a whole.Ken Norman approaches the subject of bonsai professionally. He presents the subject and technique of bonsai in a friendly step-by- step manner, and negotiates past common bonsai pitfalls with uncanny ability. This book, so far, is the best bonsai book I've ever reviewed. It is a cornucopia of bonsai wisdom. With color photography next to the carefully documented techniques, there is little room for questioning the process. This book guides you with utter confidence and is truly invaluable. The page and photography layout is reason alone to purchase this fine book. You can't pick up this book without examining the fine bonsai specimens contained within. If you wish to save yourself hours of research and commentary by unknowledgeable authors and supposed experts this book belongs on your shelf.

Great reference but small print. Give me a break guys, is this a medicine bottle? I am an old man! I don't remember if there was a kindle version, I should have of got it!

Bought this in hopes it would answer questions about how to care for a gardenia bonsai, to be disappointed by lack of information, only mentioned as a type of bonsai. Did not even give clear instruction for flowering bonsai. The word "complete" is misleading.

I like it. It doesn't have the specific Bonsai that I have in it. There's lots of useful information though so it will help guide me on my way with my first bonsai.

I have many books on bonsai but this is definitely one of my favorite. It coveres most all the beginning information you will need to learn about this fascinating culture. It really covers the basic principles and gives much needed information to develop an interest for bonsai. There are many examples given of how-to technics and lots of helpful photographs. If I were to select a good beginners book for learning about bonsai, this would be the one. It's not just theory and not just a bunch of pretty pictures. It gives you the beginning skills needed to start your own prized bonsai

In fact, I typically read a book a week. But never have I read a text which as so clear, and concise. Such a perfect marriage of simplicity and information about the subject. I actually didn't want to put the book down! Which is why I had to know about Mr. Rashid. It became clear to me that this man must be among the greatest teachers EVER!What would you normally expect when you buy a book like this? Lots of math? Plenty of dry paragraphs? Definitions on every page? Theorems and proofs? Well, if you do that in this case, you will be disappointed. Instead, what you find is that you will get exactly what you need to understand the topic, and put it into practice. No more, and no less.Mr. Rashid is an absolute master of communicating just what the reader needs to reach the point of understanding. And to get there, he uses a very simple, step-by-step approach. One that builds directly on what has gone before. No hiding the ball. No leaps in logic. Just a simple explanation that leaves no room for doubt (he works through simple examples to hammer needed points home). And at the end of the journey - and indeed, at many points along the way - where are you? I'll tell you where: you will be saying to yourself "I understand this! I got it! I am so happy I bought this book!"I got an inkling of what was to come when I read the appendices (e.g., about the basics of calculus). I figured the appendices in a book often tell you something about the author - what they decided to include, but not as part of the main text. When I finished them, I wondered why I never had a textbook, or even a teacher, like that? Why couldn't everyone explain things in this manner? I know when I give a lecture I try to make things interesting and easy to understand, but I suspect I've never reached this level, since I've never seen anything like it myself. And I've had almost 20 years in school!In the end, I have no doubt that I can use what I've learned. Indeed, I've got some nifty ideas about some ways to try this out, and am looking forward to doing so. So if you're thinking that the subject might be too difficult for you, I'm here to tell you that if you've got high school math, and even if you don't have a programming background, you can still do this!The bottom line is that if you want to learn about the basics of neural networks, THIS IS THE BOOK TO BUY! Don't even think about anything else. GET THIS BOOK!Oh yes, so who is Mr. Rashid? He's a man that is inspired to explain things to others. To really teach them, so that they can work to carry knowledge forward. But he is also a man that is too modest to publish anything about himself in his own books. You can read a little bit about him on amazon.com. That's what I did. He is truly an inspiration to me. Both in building my confidence in my own ability to learn this subject, and in restoring my confidence in others - proving to me that there are still plenty of people that truly want to do something good in this world.And Mr. Rashid, if you read this, I want you to know that you have not failed. No, you have definitely succeeded, in so many ways. Thank you for taking the time to do such great work with this book. I have never seen anything like it, and I hope you will be inspired to continue in your mission. Technical literature is not my favorite genre, not by a long shot, but in your case, I would be proud to stand first in line to buy whatever you care to write. It's that good!

I read several neutral or negative reviews about this book regarding the formatting. I am extremely pleased that I proceeded to purchase and read it despite those reviews.The author presented the core concepts of a simple neural network in the first section with a highly engaging style, taking the reader through each decision and clearly explaining the mathematics required with graphics a physical representation and text. The second section delved into Python code to exercise the concepts and walked through the code in sufficient detail that novice and experienced coders can easily understand the code. The final sections on Calculus refresher and Rasperry Pi are extra benefits for the casual reader. I am glad I elected to overlook the formatting situation, while was annoying at first - it is difficult to resize pages and do appear as PDF pages.

Very well written book with lots of explanatory images, charts, graphs, and a complete source code of a working neural network built step by step through the book. It takes the reader through building a real, working neural network without any required prior knowledge of complex math or any deep learning theory.The theory and the inner workings of the NN is explained first in a very approachable way, then in the next part the actual python program is being created, again in a very approachable and well explained way.My only regret is that it stops short from explaining some more advanced concepts like convolution layers, pooling layers, etc, that are found in modern neural networks for computer vision. Don't be put off by that though, it still explains A LOT of interesting and important concepts.For someone like me who didn't have a clue how NN work only a month ago this book was the perfect eye opener that gave me the foundations for future learning.Thanks Tariq, well done with the book!

This is a very nice introduction into Neural Networks. I have been recommending this to my friends and family. Even if you are afraid of the mathematics involved, the appendix in the book covers what you need to know in order to make sense of the math (most of it is simple algebra) with just a bit of derivatives that involve the chain rule. This is one of the few books that not only goes over the theory but also the step by step implementation (training your network to recognize handwritten numbers in Python) as well as testing the code and making minor tweaks to show how that will affect the overall accuracy of the network. For an added bonus, the author includes a chapter describing how you can train the network to recognize your own handwriting and things you can do to further increase the accuracy.Even though I highly recommend this book, there are a few grammatical errors as well as labels being incorrect in a few of the diagrams. You can still get through the book without the errors taking away from the content. I'm sure in future revisions, most of these errors will be corrected. Aside from that, I am pleased with my purchase of this book. Money well spent and I will continue referring back to this book.

The book itself can be painful to work through, as it is written for a novice, not just in algorithms and data analysis, but also in programming. For the neural network aspect, it jumped between overly simplistic and complicated, while providing neither in enough detail. That said, by the end I found it a worthwhile dive into neural networks, since once it got to the programming structure, it all made sense, but only because I stuck with it.

This review will be quite short because so many folks have echoed my own experiences with Dr. Sarno's work... I just want to add my voice and enthusiasm about this book. I could not possible praise it's simplicity and effectiveness enough. If you are reading this, just buy the book - it's so very cheap and please, please believe me, it is worth your time.

After 3 years of chronic low back pain and neck pain, I am healing. John Sarno's diagnosis is the truth, medicine is WAAY far behind in understanding the connection between emotions and illness, especially chronic pain. I bought this book in February with very consistent, badly affecting pain everyday and am now down to a daily 1 or 0 in pain. My biggest advice is HANG IN THERE, the book says it takes 6-8 weeks to heal completely and it has taken me much longer than that, don't be discouraged if you are still in pain after that time frame. Everyone is different and it took me 3 months to get to where I am now but the results are UNBELIEVABLE, pain is almost nothing to me now and in time it will be nothing and chronic pain will only be a memory.Here are some KEY tips that helped me to heal:1. Stop covering up your feelings. In the past, if someone said something offensive towards me, I would cover up the feeling by thinking about it, rationalizing why they said, what they said, the context, blah blah blah but the FEELING is what is important. My mind would say I'm not offended but the truth is I am. FEEL THAT FEELING and tell yourself it's ok to feel this. I am ok.2. Stop letting your thoughts torture you. In the past I would let my head spin in worry for hours and hours, thinking oh maybe this will happen, but what if that happens. Take charge and say NO to your worry thoughts. It will suck for a while because worry is a habit and it takes time to break so you will be stopping your thoughts A LOT but eventually the worry slows down and dissipates. Channel that inner rage at your thoughts. Tell them to shut up! I wont take this abuse anymore, I deserve to feel good and I choose to feel hopeful.3. Practice positive thinking and prayer. This will vibrationally help you to heal. Feed yourself POSITIVE ENERGY as much as you can, believe in your healing, no matter what the pain is telling you. Listen to My Morning Jacket, spend time in nature, get off Twitter and Instagram and all that noise, pet your dog, think about great things that have happened to you.4. Journal. Write about what makes you angry, sad, scared, insecure. Write it out. I would oftentimes feel the repressed rage boiling up to the surface as I wrote. This is exactly what the pain is trying to distract you from, it is great to feel that rage there.5. Cry, scream, beat the hell out of something. Get those emotions moving. If you have chronic pain, you have stale emotions sitting in you. Lay on your bed and breathe deeply into your belly, make a sound as you exhale, this helps to rouse the old emotions, bringing them to the surface. Keep breathing into it and cry it out, beat your pillow, whatever you're feeling.6. Don't worry about setbacks. I had so many times where the pain would go down, only to come back with a vengeance. I was afraid I would never heal, but the fact that you can get it moving up and down like that at all shows that things are changing. Keep practicing, hold strong, and eventually the pain starts to lose the fight.Good luck and god bless.

I have found the cause and cure for my horrible hip & leg pain that I suffered for more than 10 years!!! IT CHANGED MY LIFE!! What a great relief! I actually read Dr. Sarno’s book 10 years ago and had experienced very good results. The book was recommended by my friend Judy, who got help from reading this book and cured her TMS. (Thank you, Judy!) I was quite sure that I was having TMS back then. However, I failed the battle because and I didn’t know how to handle recurrence episodes, so I thought I was not having TMS. What a big mistake!! I gave up on the theory, put the book back to the book shelf and went back to my old treatments – physical therapy, acupuncture treatments, chiropractors, pain killers, massage, ice, etc., for 10 years!! I really wish I held onto Dr. Sarno’s theory and saved myself so much unnecessary suffering…During the past 10 (2004 – 2014) years, I was not in constant pain, but every year I had at least 2 -3 episodes. Each episode will last for about 2 months. My physical therapists told me that my core muscles were too weak; that’s why I kept injuring myself if I lift something heavy or slip my feet on ice. I had trouble to walk during the attacks, because the muscles in my hip areas were having spasm which made my hip alignment crooked, one leg will become shorter than another. During each attack, I had to accept the truth that I will have to live with the pain for about 2 months. My physical therapist said that strengthening and stretching my muscles will be my only solution.Because of the excruciating & debilitating pain, I sometimes had to use crutches. The buttock muscles were having constant spasm and the pain travels from one side to another. I can never forget the worst situation I had before, was that one night I didn’t have my crutches with me so I had to crawl from my bedroom to bathroom at night…On 12/30/13, I had another attack right before my husband’s eye surgery. I was under a lot of stress because his other health issues plus his eye surgery. During this most recent episode, I went to my PT who already became my friend to receive my usual massage and adjusting treatments for about 1 month and yet the pain still kept traveling to different areas between my hips and legs and the pain just won’t go away.On 1/23/14, I was so depressed and feeling hopeless. I felt that my life is over because of this never fading problem and it made me not able to function. Out of desperation, I suddenly thought about the book “Healing Back Pain” by Dr. Sarno that I read 10 years ago. I picked it up from my book shelf and read it again from chapter 1 carefully. This time I again see myself on each page of this book like 10 years ago. To help myself even better, I also read a lot of reviews from Amazon about this book; I realized that there are so many people had the same problem as me. A lot of them are even more serious than me and they were cured. I also found out that for some people it does takes longer to be cured 100%. Not everyone was cured 100% instantly. For some people it takes 2 day, some 1 to 2 weeks, or even 1 to 2 months, or ever longer. Be patient and do not doubt!!Another very important aspect that we should know is sometimes TMS can come back because our brains are so deeply ingrained by the previous diagnosis and experiences. We just need to learn how to deal with it by shifting our attention to our emotion and reading the daily reminder that Dr. Sarno suggested. The pain should go away in a very short period of time. I also watched some video online to help to understand how other people got help by Dr. Sarno’s theory.This time, 10 years later, the result was amazing! I’m now 100% cured! It took me about 1 week to get 100%!Here is a record during that amazing 1 week. I’d like to share this with you to hopefully be of any help to you --The 1st day – I read the book and felt 90% better immediately. I stopped messaging myself and doing any strengthening and stretching exercises that I supposed to do in the past. I can feel that my both legs were stronger and most of the pain was gone, but right buttock still has some mild pain and tightness.The 2nd day – Read more of the book and some Amazon book reviews. I can walk normally and felt stronger than yesterday. Later on, I felt a short period of pain in my groin area and I immediately shift my focus on my emotion, not my physical, and the pain just disappeared instantly. But the tightness in the right buttock was still there.The 3rd day – I read more of the book and the Amazon book reviews. I did laundry and cleaning work without any pain but with the same tightness in my right buttock.The 4th day – I went grocery shopping for 2 hours without any pain and with just the same tightness in the right buttock area. Read more of the book and watched some video regards to Dr. Sarno’s theory.The 5th day – I shoveled the snow for 2 hours with no pain. I was so proud of myself.The 6th day – I felt I was 95% better. I can still felt the tightness in my right hip area though. I went to my PT that day for the last time because the insurance company needed an evaluation report done by my PT. During this past 1 week, I purposely didn’t do any strengthening & stretching that I supposed to do and yet I my PT checked on me and said that my hip alignment was perfect. Both legs were in the same length. I told my PT about this book and cancelled all the booked appointments for the following weeks and asked her NOT to loosen me up on my right buttock since I didn’t want the treatment to confuse my brain.The 7th day – I was 100% better. The last bit of pain and tightness in my right hip area was totally gone.During the following months, I got 2 or 3 times of very mild soreness here and there, but they didn’t last and never affected my walking ability. All I needed to do was to review Dr. Sarno’s "daily reminders" on page 82 and to resume writing journals every night to focus or "think" psychological and the pain will go away instantly.However, I have to say, it does take TREMENDOUS courage. When my hips gave me the old signals that I used to think that it was about to go into spasm, I had to ignore it, and walk, bend over, or lift something, and ignore my fears. I had to force myself not to massage the sore muscles, refuse the PT treatments and be patient to let it go away itself. I had to talk to myself and deal with the fear everyday. This was the most difficult aspect of this healing, though. But it is WORTH it.I feel that I’m gaining back my confidence and ability to live my life. I’m hopeful and very thankful. I’m no longer feeling as a victim but wish my experience can be a blessing to other sufferers. Not only did it cure my pain but it gave me tremendous insights into my own psychology which were incredibly valuable. I realized that I am/was a very anxious person. I constantly live in fear. Especially about my pain, immobility and my husband and my kid’s health conditions; these are probably my biggest worries.I can only hope that more doctors and health care providers will read this book and accept this theory to help thousands and thousands of people who are suffering from TMS pain and yet are being treated incorrectly.I ordered several Dr. Sarno’s books to share with people around me. I thank God for Dr. Sarno and would recommend his book and theory to anyone who is in chronic pain. Even if you are not in pain, it’s good to have the knowledge that the connection between body and mind as a prevention and maybe you can help other people by mentioning this book. If you are in chronic pain, please read this book with an open mind. I bought 2 of these books Prayers for Young Women for my daughter & niece to have so when they come to a situation in life that they may have something to go to for the answers. GOD has the answers to everything and I am so grateful for this book by Stomie Omartian & her daughter-in-law Paige Omartian. My daughter loves this book and she told me that this was the best gift that I could have given her. That blessed me so much.

Bought this as a gift to daughter, Stormie Omaritan's books are always a good read and provide inspiration. I've read some of the devotionals and can clearly see how this can benefit any young woman. I see this book in different areas of daughters' dwelling which is an idicator that she actually reads it often and she has said she really likes the book. I would recommend to any young woman

This is just one of those books that you really should have. I'd recommend it for everyone, not just young women, it covers many areas of life that we all deal with and really helps you to know you're not alone.
