About the Author
Don Troiani’s Civil War paintings and limited edition prints hang in the finest museum and private collections, including the Smithsonian, West Point, the Pentagon, Gettysburg National Park, the US Army War College, and the National Civil War Museum. His artwork has been featured extensively on A&E, History, Discovery, and Military channels, and Don regularly serves as military advisor on major motion pictures. He is on the board of the Anne Brown Library and the Civil War Trust. He has been awarded the Meritorious Service Award of the US National Guard and designed Civil War battlefield coins for the US Mint. Don received his art training from the PA Academy of Fine Arts and the NY City Art Student’s League. He lives in Southbury, CT. Earl J. Coates is a native of Ashland, Ohio and now lives near Gettysburg, Pa. He is a lifelong student of the American Civil War specializing in arms and uniforms and has contributed to, and published, numerous articles and books on the subject. His friendship with Don Troiani began in the early 1970s. Since then he has provided research assistance on uniforms and equipment which has helped make Mr. Troiani’s work known worldwide for accuracy and detail.Mr. Coates is a graduate of Loyola College with a dual major in United States and Russian history. He served three years in the Army Security Agency and had over thirty years’ service with the National Security Agency. He retired from the NSA as a senior historian and was the first curator of the Agency’s National Cryptologic Museum. An avid shooter, he has been a member of North-South Skirmish Association since 1970, serving eight years as National Commander. In 1978 he helped form the “Friends of the National Parks at Gettysburg” and served for over six years as its president. He was also president of Maryland Arms Collectors Association and appears as a regular on Maryland Public Television’s weekly show “Chesapeake Collectables” as appraiser of Firearms and Sword. Mr. Coates has been a proud member of the Company of Military Historians since 1962.

When I ordered this book, I thought I would be disappointed. I thought it would simply be a compilation of Troiani's previous books on the American Civil War. But when I received it, I was pleasantly surprised; much of the content is new. The book is divided into two parts: Confederate Soldiers, and Union Soldiers, with a very good study of Union Corps Badges inserted between the two. There are about 50 Troiani paintings included, about one-third of which I have never seen in a previous book. My personal favorite is that of a soldier belonging to Company I, 11th Mississippi, who wears a uniform made of red jeans cloth: Red frock coat, red trousers, and a red kepi.The book is packed with color photos of original uniforms and equipment (but no weapons), and the interesting text provides valuable insights and anecdotal descriptions, such as "the pretty large sprinkling of blue pants" worn by the 61st Georgia Infantry at Gettysburg.If you are interested in Civil War uniforms and equipment, this book will be a very nice addition to your library. Recommended.
Great addition to my CW books collection. A+ as expected from Troiani, with a non weapons themed book. A large amount of his CW Collection was sold back in 2015 to the U.S. Army Center of Military History for future display. The artwork, layout & CW military pieces from the Smithsonian and other collections is terrific
The artifacts and text in this book make it a MUST HAVE for all Civil War collectors, enthusiasts, modelers, wargamers and anyone else that enjoys a quality book on the subject. The Troiani figure studies ( many not seen in print before ) are the icing on the cake and are a great compliment to the artifacts.
This is a beautiful book. I bought it for my son-in-law, who is a history buff. He really liked it and thought it was very well written. The pictures are marvelous and the whole book is very high quality.

Don Troiani and his fellow historians won’t disappoint you ! This book features numerous articles of clothing and equipment as well as a unit patches section . This along with great visuals makes for a solid book.
Another fine volume with all new pictures, full of detailed information. This will be another definitive source on uniforms of the American Civil War.
