About the Author
Capt. Franz Von Riedel has spent his life persistently documenting the complex histories of the commercial vessels in the maritime industry. Upon graduation from high school, Franz spent five years as conductor on an iron ore railroad in Northern Minnesota. From 1997–2000, he restored and operated the Marine Trader, the last commercial bumboat in North America. In 2001, Franz formed the Zenith Tugboat Company, which today owns and operates seven towing vessels. He founded the Northeastern Maritime Historical Foundation in 2002, which has become one of the prime contributors to the preservation of the towing industry, in its history and the vessels themselves. Besides his time-consuming business interests centered around the maritime industry, Franz is an avid industrial photographer and has had thousands of images published throughout the United States and Europe. Franz also writes the "News from North America" feature in the bi-monthly international publication Lekko.

Opening the interiors of America and Canada to the world, the Great Lakes shipping industry was indomitable, hard working and relentless in carrying goods through the waterways, tugs, barges, passenger and work boats and gigantic ore boats. In this collection of over three hundred historical black and white photographs, a great past is revealed, those creaking, weighted vehicles, large and small. That braved the Greta Lakes in every weather condition, furthering the commerce of a region defined by its shipping lanes and the constant traffic of goods to the interior.With detailed text accompanying the images, the author covers the lakers, tugboats, barges, passenger ships, fish tugs and workboats, even the decaying monsters relegated to the boneyard, all relayed with an intimate knowledge of the craft and a love of the trade, a variety of vessels designed for specific purposes, the fresh water giving steamships decades longer life than their saltwater counterparts, each built "bigger, stronger and more efficient", the wooden schooners and straight deck iron freighter all but disappeared with time. The ubiquitous tugboats are a mainstay of commercial navigation, the little-engines-that-could, from 40 ft. dredges to 150 ft. over-lake towing tugs. Summoned in the most extreme weather conditions, the tugs are invaluable, with their own particular lore. Barges are the most common commercial vessels, today's cargoes handled by fewer crew members. Early passenger boats carried people, livestock and mail, "packet freighters" that went from port to port until the 1950s. All that remains today are the excursion boats and gambling ships that appeal to the modern tourist.Regardless of their colorful histories, all eventually end up in the boneyard, relegated to disuse and decay, only good for scrapping. This chapter emphasizes the invaluable images that remain of the Great Lakes crafts, a rapidly changing history with little time for nostalgia. Piles of rusting metal that are hazardous to the environment, a few preserved as maritime museums, most are towed to breaking yards in India, Turkey, China and Spain. This book preserves a maritime history in an era of rising industrialization, a reminder of the men and women who spent their lives on the waterways, the captains and crews of a variety of vessels, some frozen forever in the dark of watery graves, ships that ferried cargoes and people hungry for goods and services, a fascinating maritime legacy captured in black and white. Having an extensive merchant marine library, it isn't often that I find a book that doesn't duplicate another title that I already own. Commercial Ships on the Great Lakes covers new ground, and is a welcomed addition to my shelves. Many of the ships covered in this book have been ignored by other publications.This book by Capt. Franz VonRiedel is unique in that it reviews various types of ships/vessels on the Great Lakes from the cavernous ore carrier down to the diminutive work boat. Included are passenger ships, tugboats, barges and various craft that have found themselves either abandoned or turned into museums. Each of nine chapters opens with a narrative about the type of vessel featured in the section, followed by a series of well captioned quality black & white photos of various ships. Most views are taken by the author, and feature many onboard shots of various ships.Capt. VonRiedel has drawn from his experience and interest in history and photography to produce a fine book. I would have no hesitation in recommending this book to either a casual or a serious fan of work boats or Great Lakes ships.
Just got Franz VonRiedel's Commercial Ships on the Great Lakes in the mail this morning - what a wonderful book that is! It covers a wide range of vessels - tugs, of course, but ore boats, barges, passenger vessels, peculiar things called fish tugs, and various workboats. But he doesn't stop there - Franz looks at the dead vessels lying about, and finally those that have landed in museums on the lakes.There are tons of varied pictures, all well composed and reproduced, and very informative and interesting and well-written blurbs about each vessel depicted. These are not captions, they're short pieces about types of vessels and particular stories or bits of information about each vessel to boot. He tells histories not in dry list form, but in readable style, with details about power and particular features and unusual events and sister-ships.This book is perfect for spending a few minutes with from time to time, although the times may get longer than planned, for this is good stuff.
Commercial Ships on the Great Lakes is an ambitious undertaking which is bound to frustrate the reader as the length of the book is not commeasurate with the breadth of the Great Lakes waterfront. There are just far too many bulkers, tugs, work boats of various types, law enforcement vessels, etc to cover adequately in a volume of this size. That said, the author has worked fairly hard to give one a representative view but a view that will surely leave out the one vessel you wanted included. In other words, the book whets the appetite but does not leave one satiated. In this day of relatively inexpensive color photography the book is dominated by black and white photos which are the specialty of the publisher. There is no reason this volume could not have been done in color. Commercial Ships on the Great Lakes is a worthwhile buy for the serious Great Lakes ship enthusiast but it will leave you longing for more - lots more, and in color too.
