I almost didn't purchase this book because of some of the awful reviews I read. I questioned whether I wanted to waste my time and money on something that some reviewers claimed advocates child abuse. So I began with the free sample, was pleased and decided to purchase it. After reading this book in it's entirety I am absolutely shocked at some of the awful things people wrote about this author! Dobson's advice is far from abusive and I worry about a society so permissive that it would label it as such. He stresses the importance of protecting the spirit of the child while helping to control the will. He warns against discipline that is demeaning or done in anger. He gives advice for creating a home filled with love and how to discipline a difficult child while making it evident to the child that they are loved, special, and cared for. Dobson stresses the importance if finding a balance between a household that is too harsh and too permissive as both ends of the spectrum can be harmful to a child. He does advocate swatting a child on the behind one or two times for clear acts of defiance and only after other measures have failed. He writes that spankings should be rare, never done in anger, and always followed by holding the child and lovingly telling them what they did wrong and assuring them that they are loved. However, if you disagree with spanking this book can still be beneficial to you. It is filled with an abundance of helpful information, most of which has nothing to do with spanking. Read it and take away what is useful for your situation and toss what isn't. If you have a strong willed child then I think you'll find it very beneficial!

Great book to understand your children in general, even if your child is not particularly a strong-willed child. Personally I applied Dr. Dobson's advice to my 2 and half year old girl and so far I have seen positive changes and results. We became closer, and she now shows more affection as well as respect to her parents. Would recommend to other parents who have toddlers.

This is a wonderful book and I highly recommend it. If you are not a Christian you may not agree with or understand a good part of the book, but it is based on scripture. It can help anyone though!

This book makes me so angry. I wish I could give this 0 stars. Advocates spanking your child. I now have to figure out how to get rid of this awful book. Don’t buy this!!!

The "New Strong Willed Child" is like "The Art of War" for handling strong headed children. After I've read this book, I am prepared, like General McCarthy going into battle - to defeat my strong-willed child at every turn and turn him into a weak-willed noodle who will never question my authority. This book will teach you to subdue the willpower of your child - it is clear that many children feel entitled to their own thoughts and opinions which is just not right. These days, there are too many leaders and not enough followers, and this book is the bible for techniques to use to crush your child's dreams and spirit and turn them into a timid sheep.Only issue is that I had already implemented the techniques from the "Old" Strong Willed Child and I had to learn a completely new system, but I was able to learn it in no time.

Wish I could follow the advice in this book, without risking CPS removing the child from the home. I was raised this way and it was very effective, and I was a compliant child. This book was written in the 70's, or thereabout, I believe. Times have changed. If your child tells a teacher that spankings are going on in your home, they will send someone out to investigate, especially if your chid shows signs of disrespect and defiance. It is already obvious, that for whatever reason, you have a child that causes problems.

I had a high needs baby who is now a high needs toddler. He’s different from my older two children and is extremely strong willed. His tantrums are epic! Reading this helped me understand my little guy better and the suggestions on how to parent/discipline these kiddos is working. Both my son and I are more joyful and cry a lot less with each passing day! ;) I’m so thankful Dr. Dobson wrote this book!

Get this book... Great read for parents! It was so helpful! I actually read it, then made my husband read it, then read it again! Some good tools to use to apply to strong willed kids!!

By and large, Alter's work is a milestone in the art of translation and is in and of itself an instructive resource for students of the Bible in general, and students of Hebrew in particular. Typically, the practice of translation is viewed through the lens of a false dichotomy: either translations are mechanical, wooden, and "literal" or they are dynamic, thought-for-thought, or otherwise paraphrastic. Alter demonstrates cogently and forcefully that translation is not a game of viewing words as equations to be solved, nor is it the practice of grabbing what the author was trying to say and rendering it in an "abridged" kind of way (see his article in his "Five Books of Moses" entitled, "On the Heresy of Explanation").As a Hebraist I was immediately gripped by Alter's command of the Hebrew, and stunned by his grasp of the subtle distinctions between literary expressions in the Hebrew text. It goes without saying that what the author has done in this volume and the others of his series is to demonstrate that translation is as much of an art as it is a science; biblical literature often makes sudden and abrupt changes from prose to poetry, and not to mention careful and calculating choices in vocabulary and diction. Translation is just as much about translating art as it is about saying, "this word means this, and that word means that..." Unfortunately the artistry of the text is usually compromised in many English translations because of false assumptions about "literal" versus "dynamic" and paraphrastic translations of the text.In so many ways, Robert Alter is changing the way that scholars and layman alike are viewing the art of translation, especially among those that know Hebrew and Aramaic. If you have never picked up Alter's translations before, perhaps now would be a good time. His commentary alone is provocative enough, but his translation alone is worth the price of this volume. My ONLY complaint about this volume has to do with the absence of the section that is typically at the end of his works entitled, "For Further Reading." I contacted him about this and he insists that the bibliography would have been too cumbersome and not particularly helpful for readers. In his volume, "The David Story," there is a run-down of the characters in the narrative of 1 and 2 Samuel as well as a brief list of some of the resources that he consulted in the production of that translation that are absent in this one. While I wish that those appendices would have been included in the present volume, I understand his decision, and I am not deterred in recommending his work in the slightest.Hebrew Bible translation is moving into a new age in a BIG and GREAT way. Check out this volume and others of his translations to see some of where Bible translation is heading and you might just find some insightful surprises along the way; passages that were once obscure are now clear, passages that translators flattened into clarity by way of the heresy of explanation stand ambiguous as they were in the Hebrew. Altogether, this work is extremely readable, powerfully insightful, and a sober challenge to the excuses of translators past.Happy reading!

Does any other text have such a discrepancy between the amount of time generations have devoted to studying it and the actual understanding derived from this huge effort?? Century after century people have been told that these books were God's word, an instruction manual on how to live. Generation after generation, people have lived in houses with copies of the Bible. Family history, marriages, births and deaths were recorded in it. Dedicated missionaries spent lifetimes hard at work at their desks, just so they could translate the ancient Hebrew text into obscure languages. Just what the 19th century Hawaiians made of these brutal tales is beyond me. Did they actually read it? I have relatives who defend "Biblical marriage," -- did they actually read about all the concubines? Or was it just a sacred object? So I tried to read it, first as religious guidance, then as poetry and then as history. But I either couldn't follow it, or I just didn't believe it could be saying what I thought it was saying: all that murder, rape, genocide, pillage. As an archivist, I like to get as close to the original text as possible. Robert Alter seemed to be the most qualified guide, and I decided to make one last attempt. After reading the Five Books of Moses with Robert Alter's commentary, I was addicted and went on to read "Ancient Israel," translations and commentary on Joshua, Judges, Samuel, and Kings. only with Alter's footnotes could I make sense out of the narratives. And when the actual text itself is garbled, he points out the likely reasons. For me this time, reading the OT became something of a soap opera with lots of dramatic irony as the reader sees looming disaster, "No! Don't do that!...Oh, no, they did..." There is lots of dual causality, disaster comes because the deity is mad about the worship of idols, and also because of more mundane factors like superior forces. Alter is upfront about the overall effect of the first half of "Ancient Israel" -- ruthlessness, and the general impression made by the second half -- tedium. And " nowhere in the Bible is there a more palpable discrepancy between the values and expectations of the ancient Near Eastern era in which the book was written and those of twenty-first century readers." The story of the defeat of the Canaanites is apparently mythical, not supported by archeological evidence. According to his theory, the genocide against the Canaanites as described with great approval in the Bible, probably never actually happened. The later battles with the Assyrians and Babylonians have more of a basis in fact. Alter's notes puts all of these discrepancies and correspondences between text and extra-biblical evidence in context. The Bible's fundamental if brutal honesty however comes out in the deep moral ambiguity of nearly all the great biblical heroes, so even King David, actually especially King David, they all did pretty dastardly things, that is essentially true to human nature. With Alter's framework, the folklore elements woven into the mythical and historical narratives stand out. Elijah is simply different from any of the other prophets before him. He works wishful-thinking miracles and helps the downtrodden. He miraculously provides food in times of hunger, an early model for the loaves and fishes (like the fairy tale "Tischlein Deck Dich"). Apparently these features made him the star of Jewish folklore over the centuries. Alter convincingly concludes that Elijah provides the template for many of the Jesus stories of the New Testament. The interconnections are starting to make sense to me. I'm grateful to Alter for using both his erudition and his deep insights to help non-specialists such as myself get a sense of what the OT is all about. I'm not about to give the Bible a rating, that's rather presumptuous, but Alter's notes definitely deserve 5 stars. Worth the time and effort to work through...I'm still not about to use the Bible as a guide to living, but as a guide to human nature, it's all in there.

Translation is acceptable, but not much more insightful than the JPS Tanach, which is good but missing the small verbal and grammatical clues you still have to get mostly get through much more extensive critical commentaries. This may just show the difficulty of truly transferring Hebrew into English.I was hoping there would be more emphasis on the value of the text as a solid, even well written narrative about ancient Israel. And more commentary about grammatical features and the word play found in the Hebrew. I was hoping some innovative formatting would also have been utilized to highlight the textual weave it contains, instead many pages are often filled with commentary that expresses historical opinions that have no literary or poetic content. It's such a shame with the graphics and text editing capabilities of modem software that Bible editions aren't much more artistic or innovative than those published a hundred years ago.I suggest getting the Everett Fox versions of the same texts puslished by Shocken. That seems to better capture the flow of the text and has less unhelpful historical criticism. It better formats the text to illustrate the narrative structures. Then get one of those Hebrew and English Tanachs from Koren, Artscroll or JPS that let you dig a little yourself in the Hebrew. I prefer the Koren Tanach myself. They have a Chumash with identical formatting to that. The Koren Hebrew font is elegant and easy to read and they nicely format some of poetic passages in the Hebrew as well. Their English conveys singular and plurals of the Hebrew into English in a unique fashion.

I grew up in Albuquerque. I love Albuquerque. And this book is great! I grew up going to the Kimo Theater but this book told me things I didn't know. And it introduced me to several other peoples I always knew about but didn't really know. The chapter on the murals at Maisel's is excellent. I really think that one of the best things a visitor (or even an oldtimer) to Albuquerque could do is walk around downtown with this book. I've already started recommending it friends visiting Albuquerque.

As a California tourist to Albuquerque, "Deco and Pueblo" opened my eyes to the city's architectural treasures that had been right in front of me all along. Currently sitting on our coffee table, Mr. Secord's book has proved engaging enough for a casual read, yet comprehensive enough to warrant a thorough study. Whether you're a tourist, a fan of architecture, or want to more fully enjoy the Native American art and designs that make Albuquerque unique, I recommend it highly.

Excellent book. Teaches you right off the bat why, how, and where the command goes. Emacs is really not that hard, those who see it as hard are soft. YOU need this book if you want to learn Emacs and how to use it. Online guides do not cut the fog of learning as well as this book. Vim, nah that's for babies. Real Men use Emacs. Emacs has been described as having a learning curve of a spiral, for those of you who want the spiral turned into a flat line of ease of learning. GET THIS BOOK.Also, this book doesn't provide files for you to practice on. Go to a news page and copy all the text into emacs text editor(you'll learn what the text editor is in the book) and then practice as you learn.TL;DR Buy this book. learn Emacs.

The biggest problem with this book is that it teaches you how to use MOUSE with Emacs!!! I have a lot of experience using VIM in terminal and I was expecting that the book from oReilly about the world most popular editor Emacs will not teach you how to use mouse. For example, from the book: "To paste from the system clipboard you can press the paste icon in the toolbar or associated option in the menu bar. ... or you can press middle button on the mouse or mouse wheel. the caveat here is that you need a mouse WITH a middle button" WHAT? That the hack! You should teach hot to get rid of mouse while writing software and say "Mouse is eval, don't use it if you want to be productive and efficient." This is just not acceptable for me and I'm reading this book since I have already purchased it and I can't find any better alternative to this book. this is just ridiculous OReilly, come on!Even if I highly appreciate all the hard work to write any book, I would give this book 2 stars instead of 3... The only reason why this is 3 stars is that this book has short table of commands distilled from the whole chapter at the end of each chapter and this is works good for me the way I learn Emacs.People who read this kind of books will never ever ever use mouse as a helper to develop software, they will be using TextMate or Syblime or some heavy IDE but not VIM or Emacs.

So far very useful for quick reference while on the bus or looking for things that Ive had trouble with. I run oh-my-emacs and I ran into a lot of issues there but given some work and effort I resolved all of them but the need for 24.4 (on 24.3.) This issue was related to magic which is unimportant to me anyway.

It is much easier to learn Emacs with this book, and the learning experience is much more joyful. It starts up with very basic but handy commands for editing, and it goes beyond that a little bit. Don't complain that this book does not tell you everything about Emacs, since that would takes thousands of pages. However, this book does build the basics for you to dig more into Emacs. If you are an experienced programmer, learning Emacs Lisp and customizing your own Emacs won't be difficult. This book build you the basics, and mastering Emacs depends on your effort. A very good introductory book for new Emacs user.

I have been using Vim for at least the last 13 years and really wanted to spend some time learning another great editor (you never know what the system you're working on will have installed).I have attempted to use emacs off and on over the years going through the tutorial each time. I spent an entire month on travel using nothing but this book and emacs. I would curse the editor at times, but only because my body would fall back into muscle memory. This book helped me work through all of my issues learning emacs as well as a great reference for the special nuggets that make much more sense after you have been using emacs for a while. I will never be as fluent in emacs that I am in vim, but I can hold my own with the instruction within this book.

It's a book.

I love emacs this is very good.

This book helps to explain and tutor the subject quite well. For some people, it may be a learning curve, but looking at the big picture, this software is probably based on the foundation of word processing essentials and how it relates to the integration of other programs.

Great first coloring book. The outlines are heavy, which makes it easier for the little ones to stay inside the lines. The pictures to be colored are all on the right side pages of the book, preventing the markers from bleeding onto the page to be colored. Includes transport, animals and various shapes.

Wonderful book. Pictures are simple for our 1.5 year old to want to color them, and not get overwhelmed. Highly recommend as a beginner coloring and activity book.

A great simple coloring book for toddlers. My 18 months old was interested in coloring pictures. The thick black outlines help him focus on the picture and introduce a concept of 'coloring within the lines'. The pictures are placed on one sided pages to prevent 'bleeding of color' if markers are used. Word tracing provides an extra challenge for older children.

Great age appropriate workbook. My 3 year old knows her colours, shapes and some letters an dnunbers and is beginning to trace. This workbook is a great way to keep her active during the summer vacation

A really cute high quality coloring book for little ones. It includes a good selection of animals, shapes and misc items that toddlers are most interested in. I loved the fact that it includes printable worksheets too. My son loved it, I would buy this coloring book again- the price is good too.

My daughter loves this toddler coloring book.. she sat on that desk for almost an hour doing her work.. love love love it !! Definitely recommend for smart parents.

We love our Coloring book. It has 100 pictures for color + tracing words! Neat! Paper is really good!

Nice coloring book, my son loves it

Amazon.com Review

COM (Component Object Model) forms the foundation of OLE and ActiveX as well as Microsoft's vision for componentized, distributed computing. Inside COM explains COM from the ground up, beginning with a lucid overview of what COM is and what benefits it offers programmers, then delving into the details of its actual operation. While Rogerson provides code samples in C++, the book isn't about C++ nor is it overwhelmed with program listings. Rogerson masterfully starts with a high-level view that doesn't get swamped in unnecessary detail then later fills in the gaps and addresses advanced topics. He offers just the right approach for programmers who might be intimidated by COM's apparent complexity.

About the Book:When I first received this book I was fascinated by nicely illustrated sample source codes and succinctness which is unlike other encyclopedia-sized COM books with mind-numbing wordy content with little source codes. After reading few chapters I could easily see that this book targets for both beginners and intermediates.About the Delivery:This book came all the way from California and crossed the pacific ocean to reach my doorstep and not a single page is smudged/ripped or stained. What makes me surprised is that this book was printed almost 14~17 yrs ago and it's as good as new. Thanks to amazon re-seller WCMshop for selling me this book.

Of all the books on COM they either go right into using the library functions with no explination behind them or they get over techincal. This book is the best bet for someone looking to truly learn COM and the methods behind the libraries. I'd recomend this book highly.

A very easy and useful book. The book doesn't use complex C++ or compiler specific features or MFC. You need to know only about classes and a little knowledge of Win32 programming. It also explains the COM concept and how it can be used for operating systems other than Windows. I liked chapter where the author showed in few steps how to create a remote COM object running on different machine using DCOM. This book is essential if you want to learn COM

This book is pretty old, but it is still one of the best books on COM available. The other book I would recommend you buy with this one is Developer's Workshop to COM and ATL 3.0.

The book is a good one for a beginner in COM. The examples and the descriptions provided are good. What makes reading slightly difficult, is the Grammatical mistakes in various sentences. This requires an effort by the user to rephrase and understand and then read ahead.A little more effort than usual that is required in reading a book.
