Ann Marks has written a well researched, reasoned and captivating account of Vivian Maier's life and work. The entire story of this photographer and the people who have been captivated by her work is organic. I learned of her exhibition from a Facebook friend who posted the Chicago Cultural Center exhibit from California. I traveled to see the remarkable collection from North Dakota and followed its evolution through a friend's summer internship of cataloging support, two documentaries and now, this wonderful book.Marks' attention to detail will satisfy the most discerning genealogist. She presents her hypotheses and backs each statement with all the evidence to support them. A reasonable portrait of a private and secretive artist emerges , complete with reasonable justification for sharing her work, and her life.Vivian Dorothy Maier is revered and presented as an inspiration for artists and those struggling with mental illness in an extremely respectful presentation. I am honored to have read this book and give kudos to Marks and her mother who inspired her own art.I highly recommend this book.

I should first say that this is a more accessible read than the book authored by Pamela Bannos. You can absorb this book like a Michael Connelly mystery, i.e in a day or so. The book has material the Bannos book lacks, Vivian Maier's time in California and some specific information about Maier's "bright creative" period in New York in particular. This may be because Ann Marks had access to the entire John Maloof collection and based on this was able to hunt down some additional angles. I believe this material is well worth reading. This book also reaches some conclusions that Bannos' book doesn't touch and these conclusions may be a stretch if not completely wrong. Time will tell I suppose.Other reviewers have noted the lacking quality of the photos. This is a valid point and if you're lucky to even have a copy of this book, I'd recommend you read it using the kindle reader for the web with a large monitor, like 23 inches plus. You'll have the best experience. Now I'll make myself clear about the "lucky" part.I would recommend this book if only to compare the research done by Marks and Bannos and say judge for yourself - only there's a problem. This book is not currently available for sale. It was made available some weeks before Pamela Bannos' book was published and then barely a month after Bannos' book was getting attention this book was pulled from circulation. You could not even access this product page here on Amazon with a search or by clicking on a link to it anywhere on the web.So now this product page is available again. All web links that used to point to it are no longer dangling and the question that remains is what is the matter here?Update: Well now it appears this book will be published in paper or hardcover which is good. And perhaps the kindle production will be updated. Mystery solved.

This book, while brief and somewhat academic, gives us a fascinating glimpse into the the life of someone who history will surely come to regard as one of the mid-twentieth centuries’ greatest photographers. Her story is both tragic and inspiring in that it is a tale of survival for someone who easily could have been lost to history as another victim of family disfunction. The information presented here gives important context to the images that Vivian created over decades of artistic endeavor, helping to understand her at her best and most challenging moments. A must-read for anyone who is impressed and inspired by her work.

The information in this book is very good and makes for interesting reading. That said, I was very disappointed that the 500 photos, as touted on the cover, were of very small size and most of low quality...many so low that viewing them was all but impossible. There are many images of documents from Maier's life that are of such poor quality they can't be read at all.If there is a way to access higher res images of the photos in this book I'd love to know how; I read it on an iPad Pro.

Could be an excellent book but it will not let you change the font size. Yes, you can pinch the screen to slightly enlarge the page you are on but then the sentences do not fit the screen. Sorry, the print is so small it's almost unreadable for these aged eyes. I do enjoy reading other books on my Kindle Paperwhite (2017)where I can change the fonts. Very disappointed.

I have been following the Vivian Maier story for quite some time and this is by far the best work to date. It really takes an in depth look at the woman behind the camera and relates the photos to her life at various stages. I like the fact that she gives John Maloof and Jeff Goldstein a fair shake regarding their discovery of her work and their personal efforts to share it with the world.Would love a hard copy edition so one could see the photos better!

This book promises much but fails to deliver in most respects: the photos are too small to really appreciate - and what's the point of a book about Vivian Maier if you can't see her work? - some of the reasoning is dubious, to say the least, and the whole thing could have done with some editing to remove the various spelling and grammatical mistakes.

Very informed complete and concise history of Vivian Maier's life.
