I have two sons, aged three and five, who are increasingly interested in all things super hero. It's too soon to formally read comic books with them, and there are a lot of cutesy books and cartoons out there (like Super Hero Squad) that are fine for the younger crowd. But I was still hoping for something more serious yet age appropriate. I feel this Captain American book, as well and the other round of new Marvel books, is a perfect fit for what I wanted.First, the art is really excellent. Colorful, vivid, semi-realistic--top notch. This story isn't laid out like comic panels, but instead like a normal story book--a really well-illustrated one.Second, with the Captain America movie and Avengers movie coming, we get a Captain America here that is true blue to the original comic, not movies. Luckily, the movie isn't super far off, so it's not a big deal. Still, the smaller details--like how Steve Rogers pretends to be a clumsy private while he secretly goes off on secret missions as Captain America--is very much appreciated by an old-school fan like myself.Now, Captain America is a slightly strange character. Adults who love him REALLY love him. But as a kid who grew up on comics, I found him one dimensional, a little TOO good, and the whole "America" thing seemed over the top (even when I was super young). This book isn't deep, so you won't care about whether Cap is a round or flat character. But they handle the AMERICA idea really great. Rather than start with World War II or Steve Rogers, they start with the origin of America, Manhattan specifically, following it through the centuries when native Americans lived there to colonists to 20th century United States. The idea of America representing a new world, a new chance, a place to be free, is handled gracefully; it's not too preachy or corny, yet it really makes the idea of a "Captain America" more meaningful.For cautious parents out there--I try to respect your point of view in my reviews--be aware that war is mentioned, not specifically by the title "World War II," by still mentioned as "war." There are weapons, violence, and so on. If your child is sensitive to violent imagery or if you just think your child is too young for that, be careful. It's not super graphic or nasty at all, but I just wanted to mention this.For die-hard fans, there is no mention of Captain America getting frozen in ice, no reference to Bucky or his fate, and no modern Cap. He sees the end of the war, essentially, and that's that. If that bugs you, be warned. Personally, I think it would have been overcomplicated, confusing, or possibly too heavy to mention all that anyway.I also recommend all the other recent Marvel books like this one, if you prefer the other titles. They mix and match well for a packaged gift (or an overzealous nerd dad like me).
I got this book along with Spiderman, Hulk, Iron Man, and the Avengers books. My grand kids love them!! Every time they spend the night, I have to read at least 2 or 3 of them. They love the pictures of the characters in the books and the stories. I like the hardbound feature and the paper pages are thicker than other kids books. Definitely a must buy if you have boys that are in to any of the super heroes.
The children (4.5 and 5.5) love the story. Artwork is good and the story keeps them interested.
This is a gift for my grandson. It is well made and arrived in good condition. I am pleased with the purchase.
My 7yr old sun really enjoyed reading the book. It was completely age appropriate. I would buy more in the series
My son Marcus wrote this: I liked this book because it reminds me of my seventh Halloween when I was Captain America. I also liked that it was held in New York because my grandparents live in New York. The illustrations are great because you are able to tell what's happening and the illustrations have lots of details.
