Saussure is important as a linguist (although many of his theories have since been put out to pasture) ... but he is most important for his contributions to the theory of Structuralism (and, later, Poststructuralism). His idea that you could not study language as individual units, but rather had to examine it as a structure and study how the units interacted within the structure, was enormously influential in modern and postmodern philosophy.This book is not particularly difficult; it's a bit dry, but what can you expect from a linguistics class? If you read it carefully, you'll have no problem grasping what he is saying... and, when you are done, you will be well on your way to understanding what people like Lacan, Derrida and Foucault are trying to say. (You'll also be well along your way to understanding Claude Levi-Strauss, who attempted to do for anthropology what Saussure did for linguistics). If you want to understand modern philosophy, Saussure is as indispensible as Marx or Freud. Combine this with *Saussure for Beginners* and you'll pick up Saussure's train of thought in no time.

This is the book that started structuralism. Somewhat hard at times but well worth the 1st source read.

I purchased this off of Amazon for my husband for Christmas. He is doing a PHD in English and put this book on his wishlist becasue apparently it is a necessity.

This text marks the beginnings of modern linguistics, and is a must for any linguistic bookshelf. This text is, surprisingly, somewhat difficult to find in bookstores, so I was happy to find this affordable copy at Amazon. I recommend this book, along with Bloomfield's Language, to anyone interested in the structuralist foundations of contemporary linguistics.

Good book for any body that thinks

Hopefully, there will come a day when Amazon reviewers will learn that works universally considered classic or foundational (like Saussure's) do not require reviews of their content, as the irrelevance of the opinions of Hank the English major or Jane the accountant regarding those works restrict the potential use-value of their reviews to whatever inadvertent amusement they might provide readers searching for information with which to evaluate the various editions or translations.That said, do not be fooled into buying the cheaper 'Open Court Classics' edition of the 'Cours', in a translation by Roy Harris. For most purposes, the Columbia University Press edition, a 2011 revision of the classic Wade Baskin translation by Perry Meisel, is best. Unfortunately, that is also why it is more than double the price.An example: Compare p.67 of the Open Court Harris translation with p.67 of the Columbia Meisel edition: In the former, the sign is divided into 'signal' and 'signification', whereas in the latter, the sign is divided into 'signifier' and 'signified'.While one may debate the relative virtues of these terminologies, the latter is almost universally used and recognized, while I for one have never heard anyone utter the former. Certainly, anyone reading this work for the first time would benefit from encountering it in the same terms as their disciplinary peers.

Ross Rosenfeld can be a witty, persuasive writer. His stated motivation in self-publishing this critical essay is to evaluate the historical accuracy of "Hamilton", the runaway smash-hit Broadway musical. Rosenfeld's wit is an important issue, because any work of political criticism should include flashes of humor or irony. Otherwise, the essay would run the risk of becoming mere pedantic lecturing, or dull whining. This slim volume is an effort at tackling the cultural behemoth of "Hamilton", but, on the whole, is too slim and cursory to pick up much traction in stopping that behemoth in its tracks.Rosenfeld tells us, in the introduction, that his biggest problem with the play, and his primary motivation for writing in the first place, is the use of "black actors playing white slave-owners". He describes this practice as "whitewashing history", and "both ludicrous and insulting to black Americans". This is a right-wing critique of Hamilton, but couched in left-wing vocabulary. Of course, the cast of "Hamilton" was famously intended to be a primarily minority (as opposed to "black") cast; the original and current Broadway casts include multi-racial actors of Hispanic, Asian, and Jewish descent. That's because Lin-Manuel Miranda intended the play to be the story of America then as told by America now. Rosenfeld's version of America now is evidently not as representational, or as aspirational, as Miranda's version. I'd much rather live in a world where Daveed Diggs, who, like me, is Jewish, can play President Jefferson, than in a world where you complain about that sort of casting.The author also spends much time on the cursing in the play; again, this is an easily dispelled argument, as many of the songs are framed in the hip-hop vernacular, which does employ cursing. Again, America now, not America then. In John Adams' day, the worst thing you could call someone was a "Scotsman", but, fortunately, American society has evolved well beyond this.Although Rosenfeld states that the multi-racial casting was "all I set out to write about" at first, the book scope quickly broadens to critique the historical accuracy of the play. In a larger sense, this is an unnecessary task, because somebody else already did this for him: Lin-Manuel Miranda. Miranda himself freely and openly describes what he's changed from the original history, both in his prolific annotations on Genius, and in the footnotes to the Broadway show's companion volume. Incidentally, some of Rosenfeld's complaints about accuracy have to do with the use of the words "bursar" and "Mercer" in the play, but, again, Miranda has announced elsewhere that these words were included because they rhyme with "Burr, sir", rather than with an eye to strict historical accuracy.Other complaints are Rosenfeld trying to have it both ways; he first complains when Miranda doesn't identify James Madison as an author of the Constitution (I'll assist him by pointing out that the play also excludes Gouverneur Morris)... and then carps on the line where Madison claims authorship of the Bill of Rights. Many of the complaints in the essay are, frankly, addressed by other lines from the same play. Rosenfeld's complaint that Washington was more like Cincinnatus than the play admits, are already covered by "One Last Time", Still other complaints have to do with dramaturgical choices, such as condensing characters and time-frames, but this would appear to be more a critique of the theatrical form in general, as opposed to deciding that Miranda was stabbing history in the back.Many other complaints have to do with "People didn't use those words back then", or pointing out that the phrase "sell X down the river" originated 50 years after the play is set. It's interesting that he enjoyed the song "Helpless", but didn't assail the casting of Philippa Soo, who originated the role of Eliza, on the grounds that America didn't have half-Asian people in 1780.Rosenfeld can be witty at times, and he does raise some good points about the play not giving Aaron Burr enough of the benefit of the doubt for being liberal and progressive. On the whole, though, Rosenfeld's essay mostly misses its mark.However, what I am looking forward to is Rosenfeld's follow-up volume, attacking the historical inaccuracy of the Broadway musical "Fiorello!". I mean, casting Tom Bosley as a half-Italian New Yorker? That should be a passionate rebuttal, indeed.

A detailed piece that reminds the audience to always remember that Broadway, like Hollywood, is prone to take “artistic license” when presenting real history in dramatic fashion. While the triumph of the play is exposing Hamilton’s exploits to a wider audience ... this book is a great accompaniment for anyone who cares to know what ACTUALLY went down “in the room where it happened.”

Hamilton, the musical, garnered eleven Tony awards in 2016 for the acting, story, choreography, book, orchestration, lighting, and best musical. It consistently has sold-out houses on Broadway and throughout the country.. As the subtitle, A Critical Analysis of the Lin-Manuel-Muranda and Ron Chernow Broadway Show, states, HAMILTON AND HISTORY is a historical/critical analysis show providing a critique of the play as well as a song by song analysis. It is not a review of the play itself as seen by most audience members. Hamilton brought with it an interest in the history of the founding of the United States, especially regarding our first Secretary of the Treasury. As Rosenfeld explains, his critique is primarily fact-checking. He finds much of the material is actually fictional and uses words and expressions that began more than a century later or had changed meanings over time. His first complaint is the use of all black actors portraying white slave owners. He believes that diminishes the horror of slavery. It "undermines the irony of the fact that, at the start of our nation, we had white slave owners preaching about freedom from tyranny." He also takes issue with the way the historical figures insult each other, curse, and brag. That type of behavior was not used in colonial times. Alexander Hamilton is portrayed as an inspiring immigrant. Hamilton, born in the British West Indies, was considered white. He saw himself as British, as did most of the white colonists living here as well. It ignores the fact that Hamilton supported the Alien and Sedition Acts, the most anti-immigration law of its time. Hamilton was not egalitarian. He preferred the leaders be members of the elite classes. The main part of the book is a sequential analysis of each song. The opening song, “Alexander Hamilton,” implies that Hamilton and Aaron Burr were great friends and Burr was said that he shot him. Neither is true. Saying that Hamilton "got a lot farther by working a lot harder/by being a lot smarter/by being a self-starter" is misleading. He was also lucky by being in the right place at the right time with the right people. Today, the lines resonate with the idea that if you are not successful, it is because you are not working hard enough. As many people know, people can work very hard, be very smart, and still not make it. On the other hand, people can be very wealthy because they inherited their wealth. “Considering our current lack of upward mobility, I find it both inaccurate and insensitive to imply that Hamilton's drive and ability were all he really needed to succeed." The play applies today's standards and ideas to those in Hamilton's day. The self-esteem concept did not exist at that time. Hamilton was very self-confident and would never have said, “You have to believe in yourself.” The next song, “Aaron Burr,” says that Hamilton held Burr in reverence. Since they were about the same age, Rosenfeld believes that this is probably fictional. Hamilton would not have cursed, not even his inner thoughts. “My Shot,” doesn’t show that Lafayette came to this country seeking adventure and escaping his wife and father-in-law, not fleeing the monarchy. Later he would defend the Royals against the hordes, even going so far as to order soldiers to fire into a crowd killing about 50 people. At this point in his life, Hamilton was more concerned about military glory than about the finances of the nation. The words “blow us all away” was not a common expression in colonial times. Wall Street was not a financial sector. There is no proof that Jefferson “got high” in today’s drug-related meaning. The hemp he grew on his plantation was used to make rope, not to smoke or swallow. None of the people mentioned in the reprise of “Tonight” were actually at Hamilton’s wedding. His relationship with his sister-in-law is likely fiction. Hamilton was not always the righteous one and Burr was not totally evil.. Rosenfeld also points out errors in time lines and suggests it was done to give false effect. For example, Jefferson referring back to the Bill of Rights was unlikely: “Why would they look back at something that it just been passed?” Rosenfeld has positive things to say about several of the songs. For example, he's not sure if King George means at some points in “You'll Be Back” but thinks the song is humorous, well constructed, and enjoyable. “Helpless” is not a bad song in his opinion. It is “musically sound, harmonic, and has strong vocals.” Rosenfeld resents the inaccuracies because the play has been accepted as historically true especially because of Miranda’s inclusion of Ron Chernow, a Pulitzer Prize winning historian, as a consultant. Hamilton can be appreciated for its originality and arousing an interest in the history of the United States, especially for those who had not been interested in learning about the subject or the times. However, it is historical fiction and it would unwise to rely on the musical as the basis of a history course.

Very well written and very interesting! Besides getting a good glimpse into the disparity of Alexander Hamilton's life and what is presented in the musical, it raises some important questios. How much are we willing to sacrifice the truth for entertainment, and is there a negative effect when we do so?

Amazing art. Love the book!

I am not usually the type of person that would buy a book to look at all the pictures. I am a techie and my art is computer motherboards. I thought this book was going to have more information on the jewelry. I have never had a Lark book so didn't know the reference. I have to say that this book is beautiful and I really like it. I just keep looking through it and never seem to get tired of trying to figure out what the artist must have been thinking to create the pieces in the book. Although it wasn't what I needed, it is a keeper.

Bought one for myself and loved the variety of pendants and necklaces. Bought another as a Christmas gift. She loved it

I bought this book for my grandmother, who is a jewelry-smith now that she is retired. I also do some metalsmithing, although nothing like her. We both loved this book! It was beautiful and interesting and had lots of neat and inspirational ideas. My grandmother in particular liked that all the materials were listed for every item. She did complain, however, that fewer pieces than expected were traditional metalwork. Personally I thought the use of so many new materials to be quite interesting. The biggest drawback I found was that all of the pieces were very modern or contemporary in style, which, given the title, is to be expected.Overall, a great idea book, with beautiful pictures and useful descriptions.

However, if you're unfamiliar with their work, be warned that about one third of the stuff shown falls into the category of experimental student projects and conceptual art. For example, a pendant made from an ice cube.. I have most of the series, and as a jeweler/designer, use them for reference and inspiration.

One of the saddest things in life is when a child is pushed to feel there is no other way to go on than suicide.Bullying in our schools is increasing now with the use of social media to harass, threaten and humiliate.It is tragic to know that what is found inside this well written book and TV series is a reality.I believe that everyone has a right to be heard and that taboo subjects such as suicide, rape and others that some don't wish to speak about need to be put out there or else as a society we will remain blind to what actually does happen around us.To the writer of this book, thank you for making this tragic subject come to life with a girl that can be absolutely related to and her pain can be felt in her words.I'd recommend this book to others and have myself found it to be haunting, as the words have stayed with me. I was bullied in school and this book, is something I can relate to.

This was a reread for me and I'm so glad I dived back in it. I first fell in love with this story in high school. For the longest time it was the only representation I had for mental illness, I connected with a dead girl because she had so many emotions I also shared sometimes to my own fright. Hannah's story is tragic and heartbreaking. The ending always shook me because she wasn't coming back, you had such a strong narrator for these tragedies but she wasn't going to get up and say ha! It's all a joke. She was gone, and that is one of the reasons I always came back to this book. I needed to know she was gone, that is the outcome of suicide that I didn't want to see at 17, your story is finished. Now as an adult reading it, it's still heartbreaking and terribly tragic and I still connect so strongly to this story. I loved this book and will always love this book. I read more into it now than what I did then. Clay was the perfect perspective to put it in because I can't think good things about any of the other characters, as hard as the tv show wants you too. The tv show has recently released on Netflix and they've changed so much from the original book and part of me wonders is if it's to make it make more sense. The thing is, suicide doesn't make sense. That tragic act doesn't have to make sense. It's sad and scary, and we will ever understand even with 13 separate and valid reasons, it still doesn't make sense. One this book did such a good job of showing is how small things, things we think inconsequential, can be detrimental to someone else. Something as simple as not saying goodbye given the opportunity, can change how someone feels. Now does this mean we have to walk on egg shells? No, that actually impossible. It means watch what your doing basically. If your having a bad day it isn't okay to take it out on someone else, we can control the small things so the big things won't spiral. This book will always hold a special place in my heart, and I'm sure once the shock of the show wears off it will too. I needed to reread this book, it's good to remember what we do and who we are matters. Even when you think you don't matter and no one would care, you do matter. You matter so much! ❤️

I don't know what I can say about this book that hasn't already been said. I read it after watching the Netflix series, and while there are definitely differences between the two, the combination left me reeling. It is deeply moving, poignant, and yet one of the most hopeful books I've ever read.The story revolves around Clay, who finds a box of cassette tapes waiting on his doorstep one day. As he listens to them, he is drawn into the story of Hannah, his crush that committed suicide just a couple weeks earlier. The tapes share the thirteen reasons why she made the choice that she did, one for each person that contributed to that decision.On the surface, it sounds like a horrifying premise for a read. It is a tough read at times, but no less important. Her point of creating the tapes, to be passed to each person on them, was not to be cruel. It was to make a point... the point that how we act toward one another, whether deliberate or not, makes a difference. Any one of those acts can be small in and of itself, but they can add up to push a person over the edge.Having seen the series and read the book, I have to say something I never thought I would. As much as I loved the book, I felt that the series really showed Hannah's angst just a bit more clearly. Admittedly, some of that was accomplished through changes in the plot and some details. Ideally, I would suggest indulging in both.

I'm not sure if this should be a teen book or not. I don't want to put ideas into young minds or glorify suicide in any way, considering my brother chose this route at 30 years old. He was my very best friend and it continues to devastate me every day 15 years later. Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.On the other hand, we do need to open this discussion to teens, but I just don't feel that the impact of this young girls suicide was portrayed as the immensely life ruining action for her friends and family that it should have been. Again, I'm just not sure this is the right book to impact the topic to teens as the devastating event that it is for all concerned. That being said, as a 43 year old adult who looks back on the days of high school and rumors and their impact on young people, I found the book to be representative of that deep hurt and troubling period for so many young people. This is a good read and a very page-turning, gotta know more, type of book. I would normally say "I enjoyed this book" but given the subject matter, I can't say I "enjoyed" it but I was drawn in deeply to the characters and the story and read it in one day (if you don't count reading half one day and half the next - it was really just one day of reading.) I thought the characters were well created, the book kept a great building pace, and the subject matter was impactful. FOR ADULTS (or well grounded, mature, and rooted teens) this was a very good read.

I bought this as an eBook. I am thinking that it may be easier to search the book in the printed version. It is very easy to read cover to cover in a short amount of time. There was a lot of useful information in there which helped me to plan my trip and gave me tips about what to expect. It also mentioned a helpful app for my iPhone or at least I hope it will be helpful. I think that it is a good addition to travel books to read before your trip to China.

Prior to a business trip to Shanghai, I was looking for a good introduction to the culture, with some useful and practical travel tips, particularly on being safe. I read the reviews for this book, and decided to take a chance on the purchase. I should have listened to the reviewers.This "book" is way overpriced for what you receive. Although I found a few of the tips useful, such as common phrases and handy travel apps, I would have to agree that most of the information is available via a basic Internet search. I truly believe that the limited content is worth about $.99, and would have been much more pleased with the value at that price. Anything more, and I feel taken.Additionally, I may have been more pleased with the book had I not discovered "Prepare Yourself for China" by Brian Bailie for slightly less than the price of this book. It is a much more thorough account of his tips and tricks for China travel, including some useful and entertaining stories. If you can put up with that author's negativity (in many respects) towards China, you will get a lot more out of the book, relative to this one.Ending on a positive note, I did like the summaries at the end of each section. I was able to quickly review the main points in just a few minutes by reviewing the summaries.In summary, I really wanted to like this book, but the content is too limited for the value.

Great inside information for China travelers. I highly recommend this for anyone who just got a Chinese visa. I would only want even more information on transportation and ordering safe food. I have ordered a cell phone interpreter service.

I was disappointed and expected to learn more than I did for the price paid. This should be in the $2.99 range.It would really help if you could update this with information about Internet access - is WiFi readily available, how much will it cost. If I bring my laptop will I be able to download my emails or search the internet at a reasonable price. Can I buy a local SIM card and use it in an iPhone or do I really have to buy a Chinese phone? Can I get a microSIM for iPad and where?If you're familiar with etiquette in other Asian countries, don't expect to learn too much.

I have been to china only for 1 month and have found this book is spot on lots of good tips

The information provided in this guide was generally helpful. Being written by an American it was targetted at the American traveller. As an Australian travelling in China I thought that the travel companion had over-exagerated some of the challenges.

Being saturated with female images produced only for male desire, it is a relief and a kind of miracle to see the female nude as simply herself.

This book is wonderful. Absolutely easy to work with with just the book. I learned so much Korean within two hours of just practice on my own. Since this is an INTEGRATED book, it does have a bit of a prerequisite of knowing some Korean. It briefly covers Hangul in the preface, but I suggest you learn Hangul before jumping into this book. It doesn't use the bs romanization. Meaning "hello" is written as 안녕하세요 and not as "annyeong hasaeyo" (I think that's how its usually written? Not sure. I hate studying that way.) This can be used in self study. This is my forth self-taught language. So please understand that I know what I'm saying haha.화이팅!

I'm really honestly 100% surprised with how much I was able to get out of this course level (leaving the same review for Beginning 2 since I've completed both books). I struggled with teaching myself Korean for about 10 months with other books and programs until I took a friends advice to just purchase these same college textbooks she used for Korean and learn right from the books. I wish I had done it sooner! The University of Hawaii has really impressed me with their set of Korean language books. The vocabulary and grammar are introduced and explained so clearly I rarely ever had to pick up my dictionary (though the grammar was a little more difficult to grasp than the vocab I still managed). Though I don't recommend using the textbooks alone for self-study I can say if you're going to take that route, start speaking from the very minute you open these books! I made the mistake of not asking around my friends (who speak Korean) to practice with me because now I've gone into the Intermediate levels without having any speaking practice, all I can do is read and translate (fairly well, but I would probably be much better if I could verbally speak it fluidly as well) so I'm still struggling but its not too bad! The lessons may seem a little cheesy but I think they are put together so well I really honestly had fun learning from these books at my own pace. I highly recommend making an account on Memrise and adding the Integrated Korean lessons to your account to study the vocabulary, that's what I did and I've been able to master around 800 vocabulary words from Beginning 1 & 2 with the help of Memrise! Its definitely worth a try. I really not only love how each lesson is organized but also the Appendix has all the listed grammar rules throughout the book making it really easy to find if you forget them! All in all Integrated Korean is a wonderful set of books to purchase and 100% worth every penny in my opinion regardless of whether you're purchasing them for an actual Korean course or just teaching yourself!

Once you have 한글 (Hangul) down, this is the book to study from. You’ll have a solid foundation of Korean grammar understanding by the end of this book. I recommend this book to anyone who is serious about learning Korean. The price is also very cheap for what you get out of this book, compared to similar college textbooks.There are some drawbacks, of course: there’s no answer key without going through a registration process through the website which will also cost $10 or so. I recommend talking to a native Korean either in person or through an exchange app like HelloTalk to compensate for this. You might even learn something new in the process! Finally, there are indeed exercises in the book to do with a partner. You can either skip these, or use an app, like previously stated. You’ll still learn a lot!

Is there any possible way to get a refund for this item? I am so horribly disgusted with the quality of the kindle e-book that I would like a refund, I cannot due the homework my instructor assigns due to the lack of pages and even if I could the quality of the text is so terrible that I'd still request a refund in order to purchase the paper-back edition (Which is very, very nice)

I purchased the e-book and it doesn't properly space out the characters. Korean is meant to have spaces, but the ebook doesn't display it like that. It is also hard to navigate as the pages are completely different from the printed textbook.

I've tried other books, and honestly, i love this one the best.I learned, in the first few lessons, things i never learned in my 2 years of slow, independent studies ( i still study independently) and since i got this book, my motivation for cracking down, and the pace at which i'm learning the material has increased substantially.The book teaches you hang'l in the beginning, but it's up to you to memorize it and get used to it yourself ( i was already familiar but struggling to read well) because it does not use romanization at all in the lessons, but this is what i was looking for, because i wanted a book that made me do the hard work and get used to reading hang'l, so that i could begin recognizing whole words right away instead of taking it syllable by syllable. I now read almost 10 times as fast since i started using this book. My reading and writing skills with hang'l are much more proficient. Also, when they DO use romanization, in the rare case, they use McCune-Reischauer, which i find to be the most logical and effective way to read romanized korean with fluidity and ease.buy this book.

I'm not criticizing the book, I think it's well made. However, this book is intended for Beginning Korean learners. I disagree with that. This book seems like it's for those who already have a background in Korean. Being a Korean American, I found this book to be easy, just a lot of work. But for my boyfriend who's American and has NO background in Korean, this was very fast and challenging. I really think this isn't fair for non-Korean speakers. I was shocked they were using this for Beginner's Korean. I took 2 years of Spanish and even then the Spanish workbooks and textbooks weren't this hard.

Love this book. It is easy to understand grammar points and it gives you a lot of practice on the workbook. No answer key in book. However, you can go online to find the site that has the verbal exercises and that is how you check if it is correct. I just have the beginners but plan to buy the next level when I am finished. Highly recommend it.
