So what do we have here? Essentially, a fascinating but quite partial autobiography. The decision of Cleese/Chapman to join forces with Jones/Palin/Idle/Gilliam comes at p.356 (of 375) and many of the remaining pages concern the 2014 reunion shows at the 02. Put another way, John Cleeseâ€™s new book focuses on the first 30 years of his 75-to-date year life, one of its key points being that there is an extremely rich and interesting writing life that preceded his work with the Pythons. The foci of that life are his work with Graham Chapman and his work for David Frost and Peter Sellers.The book is much more than a writing life, however. Cleese writes at length of his schooling, of his brief career as a teacher and of his plans to become a lawyer. He reveals a great deal about his parents and his own teachers and talks about life in small-village Somerset (Weston-super-Mare, Burnham-on-Sea). His memory is stupendous. He can recite all of the classes, the quirks, the nicknames and the academic pedigrees of his instructors and in doing so he offers a very special look at the nature of public school education in early-mid twentieth century Britain.By the same token, his detailed descriptions of the writing life in Britain and Americaâ€”the salaries, deadlines, shooting schedules, and so onâ€”offer an in-depth look at popular culture at the BBC, in the West End and on and off Broadway during this period. Cleeseâ€™s stories are engaging, honest, informative and self-deprecating. At the same time they include long reflections on the nature of comedy and comedic writing.While Cleese has not hesitated to discuss his marriages (particularly his financial fleecing after his third), there is very, very little here concerning that aspect of his personal life. We hear about his trans-Atlantic courtship of Connie Booth and their eventual marriage but nothing about the end of that marriage or the succeeding three (and the book is very much â€˜up to dateâ€™, having been published in November, 2014, but including detailed comments on the reunion shows that July).The overall result is a fascinating account of John Cleeseâ€™s first thirty years, with densely-detailed accounts of the texture of his life as a gawky but gifted student and as a writer succeeding in the London trenches. We learn much more, e.g., of his love of sports (and his participation in school teams) than we do of Fawlty Towers or A Fish Called Wanda. Since he is an interesting person as well as a highly-skilled writer, the book is an enjoyable and informative read. I look forward to an account of the rest of his experience.

This is not a celebrity book and it is not a funny book primarily. Rather, in my view, this is an account of how an extraordinary artistic talent is forged in an "ordinary" human being as we all start. What works particularly for this book is that, especially if you're a Python fan, you know the person very well from the outside, so when you hear what happened on the inside, and how slowly and painfully that talent has developed, it makes it that much easier to understand and appreciate the process. And you would care for that, I think, if you care about psychology, art, and if you are working to develop artistic talent yourself, regardless of whether it is related to comedy (Cleese's art in question) or not. There is some very good advice to be heard in this book.There is bitterness in it too, as if there is a grumpy old man sharing the same skull with the genius who delighted so many people around the world, and the grumpy man is wondering why he can't experience some of that delight for himself. That man seems to be searching for meaning, something I hope John will find eventually. Though I suspect had he found it earlier in life, he'd have been a happier man and we wouldn't have as much of his hilarious work to enjoy.But there is also good fun peppered throughout the book -- a few stories you'll remember which I think were alone worth the price and the time. In the end, I was sorry the book ended, but given that John basically just covered the first half of his life, there's hope that one day we'll get part II.

I am a huge fan both of Monty Python and John Cleese in particular, so I really looked forward to reading this book. In one sense, it didn't disappoint: his anecdotes on how he got started in comedy (in particular the inclusion of some of his early sketches that are hilarious) and how Monty Python got going were definitely worth the read. On the downside, Mr. Cleese cannot seem to moderate his considerable ego, and for me it grated after a while. An example of this early on in the book is when he describes his off-the-cuff theory on childhood experiences that (he believes) intelligent people have: specifically, a somewhat nomadic childhood of living in many different places, and having conflict in the household. These are two experiences that Mr. Cleese himself had, and the implication is that he is very intelligent. To cap off the dubious logic (these are my experiences, intelligent people have these experiences in common, and thus I am intelligent), he follows with a gratuitous comment on how it is unlikely that faculty members at universities in Iowa have had these experiences. First off it is unclear if he did a poll of Iowa university professors to support his claim, second of all, the noxious implication is that the faculty members in Iowa as a group are not intelligent or at least not as much so as he. I understand that celebrities do not often come with undersized egos, but Mr. Cleese's is truly majestic. If this had been one of a limited set of examples I would have ignored it and this book would have rated at least four stars. But the book is chock full of them, and it after a while it was difficult for me to get through them without gagging.In summary, the content relating to Mr. Cleese's experiences as a developing comedian is great; is gratuitous boasts and insults much less so.

I listened to this (mostly in my car) and am so glad I did. It was a privilege to have Mr Cleese himself narrate which made the stories and insights even more significant. I thoroughly enjoyed it and found myself laughing out loud at times as I was driving to and from work. Other drivers having stopped at the traffic lights must have wondered why I thought the red light was so hilarious. This a must read/listen if you are a Monty Python fan.

As it states, at the time of publishing (1981) there was only one other book written on the topic, 20 years ago, and it was only a brief overview. As this literature was long overdue, the authors were highly motivated in writing it, as you can imagine. This is one of the better books on hypnosis; the information is still true today. I have not read any newer books on this particular subject, but if you're looking for an excellent place to start, you can feel totally confident in purchasing this book. And unlike so many other books I have read, which deal with theory and clinical considerations ... this book includes the complete hypnotic patter for administering suggestibility tests. That alone makes it worth the purchase (I think I paid a penny for mine); but you will find much more than that.This book is a fantastic resource and if you're a practicing hypnotist, it ought be on your bookshelf, in your mind.Go on now, reach for it. That's it, you've got it!

Unaware this is a book on case studies, I was disappointed when I purchased it hoping to learn the methods in helping my own children. This book is great for reading past studies and the end results of how other doctors feel, but the paragraphs and examples they give are not in depth enough to assist in understanding. Perhaps breaking the book down and going more into detail would work better, but this book appears as a compilation of other doctors' theories wrapped up with these doctors' opinions.

Great book for hypnotherapists.!!!

This book's first edition was published in 1981, describing itself as a "comprehensive text...[providing] an up-to-date survey of the available information on child hypnotherapy...a detailed, thorough, and stimulating source of ideas and creative approaches to understanding chidlren and helping them develop their potential to the fullest." The revised and expanded third edition includes new material, but hasn't changed substantially from the first edition - it is hard to improve on perfection. In its latest incarnation, this third edition remains the "gold standard in the field." For more specifics, do see my published review on this book in the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, 36:12, December, 1997, pages 1782-3

Truely the most comprehensive review of the medical/psychological literature on the topic of hypnosis in children. Dr.'s Kohen and Olhness have done it again.

Disappointed the cover is a bland silver and not the cover as shown on Amazon. Content is useful.

The hard-copy versions look nice and all, but I wanted to know more about the Kindle edition. And I wasn't looking for reviews of the story. That's been the subject of glowing praise for decades. I got tired of trying to find a review that would answer the only question I had. Couldn't find one, so I finally broke down and BOUGHT the Kindle one-volume edition. And the answer is: Yes, the table of contents is all bundled together at the beginning, as opposed to having a separate T-o-C for each "volume" (stop sneering, I've seen other one-volume e-books where you have to skip through the whole first section to get to the table of contents for the second section). More importantly, the T-o-C actually works. That's right, I can go straight to any chapter by tapping that chapter on the T-o-C (again, other e-books had a static T-o-C where no amount of tapping would take me anywhere and I had to keep flipping pages to get to the chapter I wanted). Everything else seems to be functioning without problems. Dictionary, highlighting, synching between my Kindle and my phone, etc., all work perfectly. And in addition to being about half the cost of the three separate volumes, the one-volume edition helps to keep the scrolling at a minimum when searching through my library.

I bought it as a gift for my best friend, and the book is absolutely gorgeous! The cover has nice fabric-like texture, the pages are white and smooth, it has lots of illustrations. The book is big and heavy, so you won't be able to carry it around with you, it's designed for home reading. Can't recommend this edition enough: either as a gift or an addition to your library, it is a great buy.

I have never read the lord of the Rings before but I have watched the movies and played the games and I loved them. However I was always confused at what was going on at times but after reading the books everything makes so much sense now. I honestly liked the books more than the movies and although they are similar the books have way more content and details in them. So if you loved the movies I would 100% suggest getting the books.Speaking of the books I got the paperback version and they are beautiful. Although they are simple and the covers are one plain color per book it still has that sense of style and simplicity. They covers and case are thick and well made. Although their were points in the books where the words were slightly faded I still has no problem reading them.I'm not even going to talk about the story since just trust me when I say its one of the best series ever. I have never read or even considered reading a series twice but I honestly think that I might read this one a second time that's how much I liked it.So if you liked the movies and aren't sure about reading the books I would say go for it and get them since you wont be disappointed. If you never watched the movies then get both them and the books:)

Review for The Lord of the Rings.I'll keep it brief, this is not a review of the actual story but of this specific edition. I have attached many pictures that I hope help you decide if this is an edition you want to buy.Pros:- The font is big and easy to read.- 65 beautiful illustrations by Alan Lee that bring the story to life.Cons:- Slipcover is an opaque plastic, whit a modern look that I think doesn't complement the book.- One or two blank pages before and/or after each illustration.Overall I think this is a great edition and it's worth buying.

I am beyond disappointed. The font is too small to read, but I thought the artwork would make up for this since I already own editions with larger font. So many beautiful pieces of art were uploaded! Where can I find this edition? I just wasted $27. None of this artwork is found in the paperback edition. Is it found in the $90 hardback edition? Iâ€™m debating if I should just send this back since I canâ€™t even read it ðŸ˜ These books are tiny!

For some people it doesn't matter, but for me, when I bought a serie of 4 books, the covers have to be the same, but here, I have two different cover, ugly, and two others who respect the esthetic of the movies. It's supposed to be a gift, I'm very upset.

What can you say about a classic? I'd never read these books all the way through before, and was determined to try, despite remembering what I had read as being tedious and somewhat purple-prose-ish. I apparently remembered wrong - coming back as an adult, these are beautiful books, very well-written and of course true epic fantasy. It may be that my tastes have changed, or just that I've matured, but these will definitely be reread many times.My only issue is that with the Kindle version, the footnotes seemed to be messed up. Many of them only bring up a page number (with no link), which may be how it was in the original books, but others seem to apply to footnotes further down the page, or just not at all to the thing they're noted from. Frustrating.

Jerry Garcia.Unlike other books published lately ("Psychedelia: 101 Iconic Underground Rock Albums", "1967: A Complete Rock Music History", several books on The Beatles/"Sgt. Pepper's"), this is a catalog of an exhibition at the de Young Museum in S.F., focusing on that period known as the Summer of Love. This is a large, well made, nicely laid out and printed book. There's essays on the culture and legacy of the period, poster art, clothing, and music--all focusing on S.F. in the late '60s.The book is full of visual artifacts. Included are fine examples of poster art (some well known others fairly rare), period publications (like the Oracle which I used to read), book covers (including one of my favorite '60s authors Richard Brautigan), representative album covers, an array of "hippie" clothing (check out the full page color photo of a crocheted creation from '69, a long way from the hippie/thrift store clothing usually associated with the period) including Jerry Garcia's top hat and apparel from Linda Gravenites (wife of Nick Gravenites) who influenced Janis Joplin's wardrobe, and many color and b&w photos (some well known many others not). The essays are insightful and informative (depending on how much you already know), but it's the visuals throughout this book that make this worthwhile. And there's a caption for each piece that helps place it in better context.There's a two page map of S.F. in '67 that lists important venues, shops, art studios, and even a few well known houses (The Family Dog Commune, Jefferson Airplane mansion, Hell's Angels headquarters, etc.), plus a handy timeline from 1955 into 1971. There's a bibliography worth checking out if you want to read more about this era, and an index. Also included is a list that documents the exhibition (costumes, light shows, photographs, etc.) which gives a good idea of what there is to experience once inside. There's even a chapter on photo-offset lithography which details how concert posters were printed.If you were in S.F. during that time and/or simply have an interest in the Summer of Love in S.F., you will find this book worth adding to your library shelf of other good books on the subject. As good as this book is, it only whets your appetite to see (and hear) the exhibition. But this is one of the better books published on that period.

We saw the exhibition in San Francisco. The book does an excellent job of capturing what made it so remarkable.

As for the book, it is priceless, buy it. Incredible black and white and color photographs of "art" and "rock and roll."Two out of four is not bad. The "fashion," it is well, "fashion," and IMO just a little weird. As for the "love," I think Peter Fonda (supposedly playing the character of record producer Lou Adler [The Mama's and The Papa's]) said it best in the film "The Limey," (to the effect), "it was really only 1966 and early '67, that's all it was."But as for this book, it is for real, and a must have.

I lived in SF back in the 60â€™s, I was to young to hang out with the real hippies but I enjoyed pretending and I really enjoyed reviewing this book and I look forward to adding it to my book collection.

Lovely book of a fabulous exhibition of an amazing time. Had the good fortune to visit the exhibit this summer and had to have the book. It doesn't disappoint.

This stand-alone novel has a fair bit of positive elements to combat the negatives. Jumping back into the world of The Witcher is always a pleasure. The world is rich with environments and characters that allows full immersion for the reader. Geralt is back at the forefront of focus with more character development. Considering this is a 'prequel' to the saga proper, it's good to see this enhance Geralt's presence in the full story.The novel itself does take a bit of time to pick up but comes into its pace. It reads like an extended short story. This is not a detriment. It is simply an observation based on the two collections of short stories available. The intrigue is thick, the action is present (not overbearing), the characters are interesting, and the combination of all works well.One of the main issues with this stand-alone is that it is a prequel. We know there is more to come. Any peril that befalls Geralt, while very interesting, becomes moot considering the saga proper has not even yet begun. The reader, unless this is the first book they read, will know that Geralt will be okay. This should be one thing that every reader should just accept before going into the read. This may make the read dull for some readers who cannot accept this, but others will have no issue.Overall, the novel is a fine addition to the full story. The people, events, and environment make the read well worth the effort. There is some fanfare for the long-time fans as some characters come back for brief periods to add to what the reader should already know. For new readers, they get a chance to acquaint themswlves with how the world of The Witcher works. It's not an essential read, but it is an excellent read.

I enjoyed this book a great deal.It occurs time-wise after the Witcher meets Yennefer, but before the events in the Circi stories.Without giving too much way (spoilers below), this book feels closer to the original Polish versions of the stories than previous English versions. The stories have an "adult" feel to them and are less "politically correct." The characters and their stories feel more natural and less focused and filtered through a current political filter.In the first town that Gerault comes to, he almost passes out in room inhabited by extreme farting, loud mouthed women guards. Some bathroom humor ensues, and eventually there is a scuffle with the amazons.There are at least two love interests in the book (not including remembrances of Yennefer).We get to explore a bit more of the world, which is fun, and the Witcher and his dwarven companion give us a bit more philosophy in a good natured, enjoyable way.We also find out a good bit about the mages and where some of the terrors in the countryside *actually* come from.All in all, a good book for a mature reader.** Spoilers Follow **The Witcher has his swords stolen, and then he is framed by the mages and physically exploited by a female mage (he doesn't seem to mind much).Dandelion actually has a pivotal role in this book and saves Gerault's bacon on several occasions.The story takes us from some simple monster hunting to the Witcher's framing to some shady criminals to some even shadier mages who need the Witcher to "eliminate" one of their own gone rogue.The Witcher barely escapes with his life after learning that *gasp* most of the creatures that he has been fighting over the years were actually *created* by the mages guild. (Actually that *was* a shocker for this reader.)After a couple of additional complications, including the introduction of a fox-woman, child stealing, shapeshifter, Gerault is reunited with his swords.It is a fun romp, and I enjoyed the snarky banter and anti-hero aspects of the Witcher even more in this book than previous ones.My take is that this collection is closer to the mother tongue than the previous versions and thus has a better, more natural flow to it. I've mentioned it a couple of times because it becomes obvious as you read the stories.**PC warning** One caveat, if you are easily offended, or you have very specific views about who is *allowed* to be portrayed as a villain then you might not like this book. **PC warning off**

It was ok. Brought some characters we had only heard of prior to this book in, but I do wish Andrzej Sapkowski would write in a more linear fashion. Sometimes it can get tough to keep up back and forth past, present, future. This is the past compared to the last book, with the epilogue being in the future beyond the last book.

It is like one of the stories from the first book "the last wish", just longer. I really like it because the monsters and characters you get to know about are interesting. After "blood of elves" the main story gets too political and is less about the world/monsters/creatures/ and their lore and more about Ciri/Politics/Battles. It is really nice to go back to monsters and adventures with geralt, really nice story about the witcher's proffession.I recommend it for any "the witcher" fan.

I will take any opportunity to jump back into the world of the Witcher. Read all the books, played all the games, and I have some cool Witcher collectables. As much as it pains me to say it, this is the weakest Witcher book I have read. Jumps around a lot, the story is weak, and it feels very rushed. It is worth the read if you are a diehard fan who has read and done everything else Witcher themed. I worry that this book might discourage new Witcher fans from reading the wonderful Witcher Saga.

Season of Storms is essentially a stand-alone work, though you might find it less interesting if you haven't read the other books in the Witcher series (The Last Witch through The Lady of the Lake).To me, Season of Storms was a bit of a let-down. It didn't enrich my appreciation for the series, nor did it give me a significantly deeper understanding of Sapkowski's main characters. We're offered a few interesting glimpses of Dandelion--specifically his less-than-flattering opinion of Geralt--but I wish there were more moments like that.That said, Season of Storms is just as well-written and engaging as the rest of the series, so if you've read the first seven novels and find yourself hankering for more, this should prove satisfying.

About the Author

Michael Sullivan, Emeritus Professor of Mathematics at Chicago State University, received a Ph.D. in mathematics from the Illinois Institute of Technology. Mike taught at Chicago State for 35 years before recently retiring. He is a native of Chicago’s South Side and divides his time between a home in Oak Lawn IL and a condo in Naples FL. When not writing, he enjoys tennis, golf, gardening, and travel. I received an A in the class and while the book was great preparation for the Algebra involved in Calc, it wasnâ€™t particularly great with Trigonometry and very rarely foreshadowed the upcoming topics of Calculus.Details:I donâ€™t recall the book covering the Double-Angle Formulas, which was a critical component of evaluating Integrals involving Trigonometric Functions, especially semi-circle and Trig Substitution. I also wish the book emphasized the importance of Trig, beyond just the title, and actually how useful memorizing will become. Furthermore, it would have been nice had they mentioned various memorization strategies for Identities and the Trig Ratios. I certainly recommend you Google the Trig Identitiy Hexagon and the Trig Ratio Hand trick. I would have had more appreciation for the topics in this book if they had done some foreshadowing of the upcoming topics in Calculus.

The item arrived overall in very good shape. The cover was somewhat discolored and had a few scratches, but the physical pages were perfect. As for the quality of the textbook material, this is the best textbook I have read for covering the necessary math needed for higher level mathematics. The information in this book is even slightly more detailed than what is present in the Precalculus edition, but it is, of course, missing the introduction to limit theory which can always be covered later in an actual Calculus textbook. The information is thorough and concise, and for this reason, if you are someone who likes to study privately and learn by yourself, this is an excellent textbook to get started with.

I ended up dropping this class half way through the semester because it wouldnâ€™t work with my degree (and the teacher was a b) but the book came quick, was in good (but used) condition, itâ€™s interesting and fairly helpful. Iâ€™m keeping this book for future use cause itâ€™s fully self sustaining and you can learn from that rather then just use it for prep questions. Btw, almost NO difference between the 8th, 9th and 10th ed. so buy the cheapest one lol.

This book is the best of its kind. But turning back and forth to the answers is a hassle. Some questions have answers, some don't. It's pretty awkward to use as a teacher. I bought the solution book to help out. Same issue some problems have answers and some do not. IT's good for the curriculum though and great for the price (used) plus theres an online version and test question banks available. That is what got me to this book in the first place.

The book itself: This textbook is extremely popular for the breadth and depth of algebra and trig that it covers. This is no dummies book; it's a book written like everyone is a math major, and that's one of the reasons math professors love it. However, its hard core math-for-mathematicians focus makes it a tough textbook experience for some students to wrap their heads around the material. If you 're a math novice, mathphobic, haven't taken math in a long time, or if you didn't take (and pass) AP algebra, trig or even calculus in high school, then you will struggle with any class that uses this textbook. Sullivan does not simplify things. He expects you to know what you're doing, and you'd better be able to run with him or learn to to run, else you'll get left behind with this textbook. If you're sketchy with math and have no choice about using this book, then expect to spend time with a tutor. A lot of time. If you're wanting a more user-friendly experience with math this advanced, definitely look for a professor/college that uses the Blitzer Precalculus textbook. If you're wanting to fly with math, then Sullivan is your book.A la carte vs hardcover: Some people don't like a la carte texts. Of course, hardcovers are more durable and thus have more resale value, but some of us have other considerations to make with a textbook. I'm disabled, so I need to keep my load as light as possible, so the a la carte textbooks definitely make my life easier. Even if I weren't disabled, I'd love the option of being able to bring only what I need with me, rather than an entire textbook. That's especially important in the case of this Sullivan textbook. It has over 1000 pages and the paper is slightly glossy, which adds to the weight. The a la carte version saves a ton of strain on shoulder, neck and back.To test out how much I'd hate carrying the hardback version, I borrowed a copy from the math department of my university (one of the perks of working there), to prep for my upcoming pre-calc class over the winter break. Thankfully, the farthest I carry it right now is from one corner of my desk to another, because the hardback is one bear of a heavy book. I'd kill myself if I had to lug it to and from class every day.Another good reason for having the a la carte book is that we're only using half of the book this semester. Why carry around material I don't need, for the half that I do? Seems like a no-brainer to me.10th edition vs. 9th: This is not a textbook update merely for the sake of making a few bucks, or staying ahead of torrents. I had the ninth edition, once upon a time, and I like this tenth much better. Pearson upped the quality of the paper and made the pages a brighter white, which makes them far easier to read. The images pop from the page now, and they didn't do that before. The paper itself is sturdier than the previous version, making it less prone to wrinkling and ripping than with the 9th edition. Oddly, by improving the paper quality, they made the book lighter than it was before, and that's definitely a bonus. The improvements of the physical book itself are all for the better.The differences in material covered between this version and the ninth aren't all that dramatic, but they're definitely not absent. Some of the figures have been moved around or redone, and some of the problem set questions have been re-worked. Some errors in the solutions have also been cleared up. Sullivan is also a lot clearer when he's using proofs to explain concepts than he was before, and that's a huge help. I know that his explanations of the concepts underlying the material bores the STEM majors who only need to get through their required math classes, but, for math majors like me, those proofs are a good intro to what we'll see after calculus. He strips that process down a lot, but it's still a decent "getting the feet wet" intro to proofs.You'll definitely want to get the solution manual to go with this book, math major or not. Sullivan has a habit of skipping over steps/ideas that make the concepts make more sense, and the solution manual tends to address those omissions.Overall, I'm very pleased with this update. It addresses a lot of the nits I picked with the ninth edition, which was such a terrible textbook that it scared me away from taking classes that used it. Now I'm confident I can not only grasp the material in this book, but that I'll succeed with it, too.

I used this book for my Fall 2015 class. It came with the access card needed for class. The book was just and updated version of previous versions with some math problems changed and format changes. I still had to use youtube and other resources to help me solve problems the even problems that did not have example of how to solve in the textbook.

Was used, so I was expecting some damage, but it was more than I thought. Still not bad but it got annoying sometimes because the pages were messed up.

Very boring, but it teaches math and the class requires either this or the newer one. With this being much cheaper I'm happy to sacrifice the newness of it
