Review

“Please read this book with a feeling of gratitude. Joseph Bobrow is a true teacher of meditation. He has walked his talk and he truly enjoys his practice.” - Thich Nhat Hanh“Writing in an electrifying prose that lights up continuously brilliant connections between psychoanalysis and Zen, Bobrow is nonetheless New York in motion: the New York of Whitman, Mailer, and Heller … Brilliant, moving, and unforgettable.” - Christopher Bollas“Often the most interesting places in our lives are found where two contrasting spheres of influence meet – those warm tidepools of the littoral zone that bristle with all sorts of fertile surprises. Joseph Bobrow’s book embodies just such a rich encounter in the interfacing of Zen and psychotherapy. His several decades of experience have enabled him to draw knowledgeably and freely from both disciplines. His narrative coaxes insights as often from academic papers, encounters and dreams, as it does from koans and dialogues of the ancients, poems, and song lyrics. All of these he has brewed together in the fecund pool of his own wisdom and thoughtful analysis, and what has emerged from that crucible is a fine book, brimming with life, and resonant with integrity and heart. It would be no surprise if people were quoting from it long into the future.” - Ajahn Amaro, co-abbot of Abhayagiri Buddhist Monastery in Redwood Valley, California, author of Small Boat, Great Mountain; Silent Rain; Rugged Interdependency“His book, like the Zen teachings he has mastered, is smart, lively and provocative.” - Mark Epstein, M.D. author of Thoughts without a Thinker and Going to Pieces without Falling Apart“Zen and Psychotherapy is the most thoughtful book I’ve read so far in the important and burgeoning literature on Buddhism and Western psychology. His unusual gift for vivid theory and subtle distinction, as well as his grounded sense of what is really possible and worthwhile for the inner life, make this book a landmark for all of us who are in the business of continuing this crucial personal and cultural conversation.” - Norman Fischer, poet and Zen teacher, author of Sailing Home“Zen master and psychoanalyst, Joseph Bobrow has a rare depth and subtlety of experience in both disciplines and ways of life. After nearly 40 years of practice and teaching in each, he has written a definitive, clear and compassionate book that argues persuasively that Zen and psychotherapy are complementary traditions. Each challenges and enriches the other. Even enlightened Buddhist practitioners can expand themselves as individuals and in their relationships. Therapists and their patients can become more meaningfully aware of the depth of experience that lies beyond individuality and individuation. Mindful of differences, but also indivisible links, Bobrow challenges us to realize the integration of the personal and the universal in our daily lives. Anyone interested in psychological or spiritual ideas or practice will find much of value in this deeply gratifying and informative work.” - Gerald I. Fogel, MD, Training and Supervising Analyst and former Director, Oregon Psychoanalytic Center“This wise book provides a context for both psychotherapists and students of Buddhism to think in new and helpful ways. Its implications for trauma therapy, in particular, are substantial. I gained a lot from this book and highly recommend it to others.” - John Briere, PhD, Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Psychology, University of Southern California, and Director, Psychological Trauma Program, Los Angeles County and USC Medical Center

While I frequently bring mindfulness and Zen into my conversations with clients, there was little practical help here. Far too analytic for the every man(woman) clinician....I gave up on it.

Among the many books that have recently appeared exploring the intersection between Buddhism and psychotherapy it is still rather rare to find a title authored by a person who has trained both to the level of a Zen master and a fully qualified psychoanalyst. Joseph Bobrow, who currently practices psychoanalysis and is also founder and Roshi of Deep Streams Institute in San Francisco ([...] is that rare person.Among the many intriguing things about Bobrow is his commitment to bringing his dharma practice and his analytic world view into relationship in ways that can be of practical help to others outside the zendo and the consulting room. Some years ago Bobrow began the work of the Coming Home Project that serves Iraq and Afghanistan veterans and their families ([...] The Coming Home project is neither Buddhist nor analytic but a practical and creative effort designed to help Veterans in many different ways. The Coming Home project exemplifies the creative trend of "engaged Buddhism" as well as showing Bobrow's commitment to a larger view of the "analyst-as-citizen".His recent book Zen and Psychotherapy: Partners in Liberation is another example of the creative interaction between his Buddhist studies and his analytic work. Written in accessible and conversational style, Bobrow effortlessly weaves stories of clinical practice and Buddhist reflections into a quietly captivating series of chapters. Some writers in this emerging genre take pains to demonstrate their scholarship or intellectual virtuosity. Bobrow is the opposite. His prose is so apparently open and simple that one might not notice how much experience exists in the background. In other words, this is a book that both beginners and seasoned students will enjoy. One can understand it without much preparation while others will appreciate its relaxed sophistication.I admire the quiet aliveness of Bobrow's writing. He is personal without being self absorbed. Some of his clinical vignettes are quite moving. In particular I like a story early in the book where he shares an experience with one of his patients as describes a moment of her emotional awakening. Bobrow neither turns away from it nor over describes it. Instead, he is present and shares something emerging that becomes meaningful to both. It is neither a Buddhist experience nor a psychoanalytic experience. Bobrow doesn't have to pin it down, name it, or concretize it. He allows it, instead, to just be what it is. It is something lived together, something whose meaning exceeds description. Bobrow is able somehow to convey the sense of something ordinary and of something special simultaneously. Experience is not fabricated here, instead, the habits of seeing oneself in a particular way just begin to loosen and fall away.Bobrow touches on many themes close to my heart, especially in such beautifully titled chapters as "Harvesting the Ordinary" which deals with such themes as suffering, reverie, and attention. I also resonated with his themes in "Presence of Mind" and "Knowing the Truth" which raise important questions and then explore issues in a to and fro of Buddhist and analytic perspectives. The overall experience of reading Bobrow is one of appreciation for how personally he has expressed his own experience. I get a sense of the texture of his thinking, how it resonates with my experience and the many different kinds of pathways that open up into new thoughts and ideas. His writing seemed to create a generative space for me.A nice phrase that Bobrow offers is "a glimmer of Suchness". That phrase describes the experience of reading Zen and Psychotherapy. One catches occasionally such glimmers. It is a generous work, not intending to convert anyone to any particular point of view, but rather sharing many points of view a refreshing and open way.

Although this is a book with a rather defined scope, Dr. Bobrow's treatise on these fascinating topics will satisfy any student of consciousness. Crafted and readable, it is approaches the topic of human expansion enjoyably and with soul. It highlights the overlap in both disciplines in a creative and innovative way, leading the reader on a new journey from the viewpoint of one with deep and practical experience. The personal anecdotes enliven the material in a way that brings real life and insight to these two fields. Suitable for professionals, practitioners and the discriminating seeker, this book is a benchmark in what could be a new field in itself. A real success.

With the turn of the colloquial phrase Joseph Bobrow captures the essential, wakes up the mind, opens the heart. The exploration may be conceptually complex but references authentic experience. A lay person can walk on solid ground without stumbling, travel the path with pleasure, and arrive with a new awareness of the nature of the journey.

First, I will state that I am a lovecraft fan, to the point of having written lovecraftian fan-fic,So, of course I have nothing but praise. And I will state when they say complete, they mean complete. I have long since had a full collection of everything lovecraft wrote, so when I got this, I was expecting merely the usual "Complete Works" which never include all the collaborations.Oh, you haven't read the collaborations? Then here's your chance. They are ALL here... Except... again... Ashes with CM Eddy. No doubt once more due to Eddy's grandson refusing to allow publication, AGAIN. (The Man appears obsessed with preventing his grandfathers SS with HPL from seeing publication.)Nor will you find Derleth's "posthumous" Lovecraftian style stories, which while derivative of HPL's work, cannot in any sense be claimed to have been written or co-written by HPL. (Derleth just could not fill HP's shoes, no matter how hard he tried. But he can be thanked for keeping HPL in publication and in the public eye for most of last century.)So, if you are new to HPL, or a die hard fan, you will definitely find it almost tells the truth with its title, and you can't really blame the publishers for Eddy's grandson being an obstinate fool.

Great collection of Lovecraft's works. This is the most expansive collection I've found for an unimaginably cheap price (at the time of writing costing 99 cents). The audiobooks are a bit hit and miss, but for the price is a welcome addition. Just as a note, the audiobooks are found via a link to a google drive on the second-to-last page of the book.

OK, Lovecraft is one of those authors that you either love or hate. His stories are dark, always with supernatural element to them, following a somewhat constant theme of cosmic races that somehow found their way into our planet. If you like this mixture of horror, supernatural, and alien life forms, you will like Lovecraft.I like his style - his tales develop in a deliberately slow cadence, where information is delivered in small doses at a very regular pace, which makes it hard to set a story aside once you start it. His English is polished and elegant, not your 8th grade level prose you find in many authors today; personally, I appreciate reading intelligently written, well composed sentences. If you are a dialog kind of person, be aware that are barely any in his books. Having said that, his descriptions of places, people and monsters are vivid, greatly stimulating your imagination.A few tales are particularly good - "The Dreams in the Witch House" and "At the Mountain of Madness" are the ones I like the best. I have to say, however, that this is not a book to read in one sitting; after some time, the stories and the themes become a bit repetitive; I usually read anywhere between five or ten stores, set the book aside to read something else, and when I'm in the mood, I go back to Lovecraft again.

When I was looking over the choices of Lovecraft ebook collections, what I wanted to know was what each version contained. Some of the earlier reviews on this page clearly applied to earlier editions. A note in the ebook says "...consists purely of his mature and singly authored fiction. It does not include his juvenilia, collaborative works, poems, letters, or nonfiction."As of May 30, 2018, the Kindle edition does contain a table of contents with links. Here's what's in it:The Nameless City, The Festival, The Colour Out of Space, The Call of Cthulu, The Dunwich Horror, The Whisperer in Darkness, The Dreams in the Witch House, The Haunter of the Dark, The Shadow Over Innsmouth, The Shadow Out of Time, At the Mountains of Madness, The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, Azathoth, Beyond the Wall of Sleep, Celephaïs, Cool Air, Dagon, Ex Oblivione, Facts Concerning the Late Arthur Jermyn and His Family, From Beyond, He, Herbert West-Reanimator, Hypnos, In the Vault, Memory, Nyarlathotep, Pickman's Model, The Book, The Cats of Ulthar, The Descendant, The Doom That Came to Sarnath, The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath, The Evil Clergyman, The Horror at Red Hook, The Hound, The Lurking Fear, The Moon-Bog, The Music of Erich Zann, The Other Gods, The Outsider, The Picture in the House, The Quest of Iranon, The Rats in the Walls, The Shunned House, The Silver Key, The Statement of Randolph Carter, The Strange High House in the Mist, The Street, The Temple, The Terrible Old Man, The Thing on the Doorstep, The Tomb, The Transition of Juan Romero, The Tree, The Unnamable, The White Ship, What the Moon Brings, Polaris, The Very Old Folk, Ibid, Old Bugs, Sweet Ermengarde, or, The Heart of a Country Girl, A Reminiscence of Dr. Samuel Johnson, The History of the Necronomicon. All the stories include citations of when they were written and where they were first published. Some earlier comments refer to a link to free audio files, but I found no link, and a search of the ebook showed no mention of audio in this version, as of this date. Review

"A riveting mix of molecular science, big personalities—and big money." (Nature)“Barry Werth’s new book does for the world of biotech drug development what The Soul of a New Machine did for the dawn of the computer age. It presents an exciting narrative about the business of bringing new products to market.” (Boston Globe)“You can read The Antidote as a book about predicaments encountered by just about any company whose future depends on constant innovation. Yet, given Mr. Werth's welcome attention to personalities and circumstances—as well as to the recalcitrance of particular molecules and particular suffering bodies—you can also take the book at face value, as a story about what happened in one company in one fairly short period of time. ... The vividness and rich detail of "The Antidote" make it a gripping coming-of-age story for modern corporate and scientific times.” (The Wall Street Journal)“Werth's excellent writing takes the reader deep into the heart of Vertex and into the dilemma facing the biotech pioneers, and us all.” (Fortune)“Werth keeps a brisk pace, describing Vertex as the antidote to older pharma and Merck in particular. He infuses the book with drama, even managing to make a regulatory meeting seem exciting.” (The Economist)“The book is an in-depth look at a company in a daunting, high-stakes, highly regulated business in which science, commerce and politics intersect.” (Pittsburgh Tribune)“Werth very aptly captured the drama of the pharmaceutical industry … Werth was able to obtain extraordinary inside information on the workings of the pharmaceutical industry. He was able to capture the emotional and psychological state of the players, the day-to-day workings of the companies with failures and successes of research, as well as collaborations with other companies and acquisitions. … Succinct and understandable.” (New York Journal of Books)“[Werth’s] rendering of bright, quirky individuals and their determination to make Vertex sustainable will satisfy anyone seeking an exciting biotech business story. … A revealing, readable book.” (Kirkus Reviews)“Werth doesn’t shy away from technical details, and The Antidote has plenty of “inside baseball” for pharma industry cognosenti ... Werth uses them as the backdrop to ask a more broadly relevant and philosophical question: not just how to build a large drug company, but what to grow up to become? …. Sometime, somewhere, a future biopharma CEO will hopefully read The Antidote and be inspired to continue the quest.” (Pharmagellan.com)

#117,065 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

As a biomedical scientist I really enjoyed this book. It is the sequel to the author's previous volume "The Billion Dollar Molecule". Both books provide a fly-on-the-wall account of Vertex Pharmaceuticals, an innovative biopharmaceutical company that brought two breakthrough medicines - one for hepatitis C and the other for cystic fibrosis - to market two years ago. Both these drugs were the first of their kind and have given thousands of patients a new lease on life. From a broader perspective however, the author's goal is to shed light both on the immensely challenging process of bringing a new drug to market and the brilliant scientists and driven personalities that make it possible.Werth's account of Vertex focuses mainly on the hepatitis C drug, with the cystic fibrosis drug playing a smaller but still important role. The previous book was much more science-heavy than this one, emphasizing the chemistry, biology and computer science that goes into the early stages of drug discovery. In spite of the intense scientific competition and research depicted in that volume (much of it spanning the late 80s and early 90s), Vertex did not bring a successful drug to market until 2010, underscoring the challenge of drug discovery in which you have to furiously paddle simply to stay afloat. The two books thus mirror two different phases of the company: the first dealing mainly with the science and the birthing pains of a new startup, and the second dealing with the transformation of the startup into a commercial enterprise. You will thus find much more of the business, legal and commercial aspects of drug development in this volume. Boardroom deliberations and the subtleties of drug pricing litter the narrative. Both books, however, provide an excellent overview of the multiple challenging stages of drug discovery, from discovering an initial "hit", to optimizing its properties to formulating it and finally selling it in the form a once-a-day pill. The account of formulation difficulties was especially revealing to me. As the founder of Vertex put it, taking a drug all the way from initial discovery to the market is harder than putting a man on the moon, partly because the biology is so complex and incompletely understood.Werth has always been a skilled purveyor of the personalities and egos that populate the highest echelons of the science and business and he continues this tradition in this book. Along with highly driven scientists we meet egotistic but talented lawyers, executives, government officials, Wall Street analysts and venture capitalists. The founder of Vertex is described as having a "reality distortion field" akin to Steve Jobs. The character descriptions are far more colorful in the previous book but this volume does have its share of sharp profiles: for instance one management consultant "dressed like George Will but sounded like Don Draper channeling Alan Ginsburg". One of the strengths of the previous volume was that many of the personalities portrayed in it - including academic giants like Robert Burns Woodward and industrial giants like George Merck - were fundamentally more interesting but the present account on the other hand does a better job of describing the vast and sundry set of individuals required to sustain the diverse drug enterprise. We also see how cruel the business can be, bringing failure to years of intense effort and laying off dedicated scientists who have given their heart and soul to the process.Werth's discussion of the two Vertex drugs also raises important questions about the future of the industry. The hepatitis drug is targeted toward a vast patient population, much of which is located in poor countries. The cystic fibrosis drug is targeted toward a small patient population, much of which is located in rich countries. The stories of patients in both groups - one of which Werth documents in detail - are heartbreaking, but in both cases the challenge is to balance profits with cures. In one case the company was compelled to charge exorbitant amounts of money because of the small patient population while in the other case the lack of wealthy patients led to lower revenues. Whether you are developing a drug for millions or for thousands, the R&D costs are roughly the same - and enormous. This is the moral and financial challenge the industry faces right now; how, when it is trying to develop highly personalized therapies for smaller and smaller patient groups, can it get away with both charging reasonable prices and recovering the expenditure on R&D that it can plug into developing the next drug. Werth deftly discusses these issues along with the underlying ones of FDA approvals and Medicare and government controls.Ironically, the successful Vertex story - which culminated last year in a move to a shining, sprawling new building near Boston Harbor - ends in a somewhat somber note. Many of the most important scientists - including the founder - who discovered the two medicines are no longer with the company and the highly-science driven approach that was described in the first book seems to have taken a backseat to commercial pursuits. The future of the company is thus not completely certain, and Werth ends with an afterword in which he discusses the fate of big pharmaceutical companies which seem to be laying off thousands, making incremental advances and cutting each others' throats to bring the next "me-too" pill to market. Unlike Vertex, many of these organizations spend much more on marketing than on R&D and are busy pleasing Wall Street and shareholders rather than patients. As Werth reminds us, if we want to advance the next groundbreaking medicines we need to remember George Merck's advice: focus on patients, the profits will follow. The story of Vertex provides both a shining example and a cautionary note.

Extremely interesting followup to his previous book (The Billion-Dollar Molecule: The Quest for the Perfect Drug) on the biotech company Vertex. Many of the characters from the prior book have either moved on to other ventures or moved up the corporate ladder. Werth traces the evolution of Vertex from a feisty startup focused on perfecting an immunological anti rejection compound for transplants to the more mature company with a different focus and portfolio that it has become over three decades. It also serves as a cautionary tale for the drive to keep a company afloat with investors and in placing too much emphasis (HepC) on a single disease and compound for a company's success. Vertex dominated the HepC market, but only for a brief instant in time. Eric Olson (who has left Vertex) spearheaded the cystic fibrosis program which is now the leading product and dominant revenue stream for the company. Read both books to see how the company started out to design drugs de novo from protein structural information, and by a very convoluted path ended up where it is today.

My son participates in Phase 1 and Phase 3 drug trials at the Univ of Texas. That is complex stuff. The scientific development of the drugs being tested is much more difficult. This book gives you some idea of what is involved. I wish that there were more books like this on other drug companies. This book was particularly good on giving you some idea of the gyrations of the stock price of these companies and what is behind the gyrations. Vertex brought a drug to the market to cure hepatitis C. Possibly one might come up with some discounted cash-flow analysis which would give a value for the company......but after Vertex got its drug to market someone came along with another better drug. How do you model that?I admire Vertex's quest for innovation. But 20 years of research before it can bring a drug to market is almost unbelievable. How they managed to finance this is amazing. The key to all economic growth is innovation. One of the vital issues is how to finance this innovation which requires so much research. There aren't any easy answer. The US seems to be doing better than most other countries.

This book is amazing because I never thought a corporation can have so many souls dancing inside, let alone a Pharma company. I want to say that I exaggerated only a little to compare this book's story to the 10 year Trojan War.What really touched me are the stories of individuals. The Bogers who "bore the torch" in the early days of doing great science and exploring the frontiers, the successors who financed and commercialized the founders' vision, the Wall Street analysts wanting to milk the new Pharmas like they did with the old, the patient advocates who wanted Vertex to remain true to its mission even when it is burning through hundreds of thousands of dollars a day... Those are real people competing viciously with selfish aims and playing out in a ruthless business world where billions of dollars would be won or lost on any single day. The deciding factors at the end of the day are two things: luck and balls.Who doesn't become exited when warm humanitarian ideas and cold hard cash were tossed together and shaken violently by a group of crazy scientists? I will have that straight up any day.

I work in Pharma and the book goes a long way to depict the inner workings and dynamics of the industry with real-life happenings.

Fascinating, accurate look inside pharmaceuticals! The author, Barry Werth, gets inside an industry that is often closed and difficult to explore. HE ROCKS!

An incredibly detailed look inside the world of Pharma. One gets to see the sausages getting made, and how many compromises are needed and how much perseverance and straight up good luck in needed to get a drug to market. Drug discovery and Development is hard, expensive and non-linear. But ultimately the payoff can be fantastic. This book takes you on that journey.

great job.

Unclear. For example it says the chapter on modeling defines concepts for the rest of the book, and three rules for good design involve keys, for which readers can check the glossary. The glossary has very vague definitions, with undefined terms. Examples would help. Is there a beginner's book on modeling?

This books read like a freking manual, to dang dry for my test. confusing at times. This book is not for beginners at all.waist of money and time... had better luck with on you tube tutorials.

This book helps me understand the features in Workbench. The book is organized well.

Great information display!!

Good book!

This book to me is a great way to learn how to navigate and fully utilize the MySQL Workbench. With the knowledge and reference you get from this book and a little practice you can work your way around workbench to get the most out of your mySQL database.

Hard to understand. If this is your first exposure to the subject you might want to look elsewhere

If you have any previous knowledge or experience with databases or SQL, then this might be for you. In that case, it might be a 5 star rating. IF you, like me, are a complete beginner, you will find this book lacking tidbits of information every once in a while. I imagine someone already established in databases or SQL will be able to cope with that easily, but total beginners? maybe not....O, and 11g isn't the latest release of Oracle's DB. Yet another reason to reconsider.

So, I almost quit the series at book four thanks to the inconsiderate person that did not mark their review of Omega as a spoiler(it's a big one too). And, Amazon has the whole review showing on the book page so I couldn't miss the OMG at the end of the review. However I love Sienna and felt I needed to keep reading. I knew Siena was going to have to go through some rough times, but in this book it really hurt. I just hope she is able to get through this and still be herself after. I'm glad I continued with the series and I hope I will enjoy the rest of the books as much as the first few.

I really enjoyed the first 3 novels in this series. They might be classified as Teen books but even we adults enjoy something a little less emotional or a little more light hearted once in a while. In the first 3 books you could tell the author was starting out this great story. In the fourth book you can really tell the author has found his rhythm with the story line. The characters have so much more depth and are much more interesting. AS for it being a Teen book, being less intense, emotional or lighthearted. This book blew that out of the water. Every chapter was fraught with emotionally challenging events. Some were scarier and more violent than I expected. It was a great, if disturbing, surprise. The main character finally becomes a young woman no longer afraid of making her own decisions and by the end of the book, no longer under the dominance of a cruel mother. This was the one person she had to come face to face with to finally break those chains of bondage. This scene is both poignant, suspenseful and very different from how I thought their conflict would come to a head.I'm getting ready to read the 5th book in his series. I can't wait to see what happens now to these wonderfully different characters I have become emotionally involved with. I recommend this to Teen's and to anyone who ever wondered if there was something to all those stories we were told as children about mythical creatures, of human beings with superpowers, stories of things going bump in the night and finally, of mythical creatures sent here to protect us.IF any of this sounds remotely interesting, get the "Girl in the box "series written by Robert J Crane. You will not be disappointed and just may find yourself a new "favorite" author.I'm off to start my marathon reading of book 5...I'll let you know how it all turns out. Well maybe not all. Somethings are better discovered on your own….. Enjoy Reading!!!!Thank you R.J.C for another great book. They get better with each story and I believe you are on your way to becoming a great novelist

Wow. Just, wow. I just finished The Girl in the Box, book 5 titled Omega. This is one of the best books I’ve read in a very long time. And, damn it, I cried... a lot!My 5 star rating is based upon the fact that this book means we are half way through the series, which means things have to racchet up before settling down. And boy has that racchet gone up a million notches. Because of the pacing, the format in which Mr. Crane has created when telling this story on a series, the emotions portrayed by the characters (and by me), and the actual world that has been created by Mr. Crane, this book gets a solid 5 star rating from me.Thank you, Mr. Crane, for telling us this amazing, fast paced, and most exciting tale.

As you read this story you start giving the characters faces, voices, personalities and most of all everyone holds a different place in your heart. There are some you want to choke others you would like to kill and a hand full of them become suspicious as you play this out in your head like a movie. But most of all you fall in love with some people like going to a 2 week sleep over camp as a child. You're homesick for 2 days tops and after the 2 weeks you don't want to go home. Well I said all of that to say you feel all of these emotions in this series. If you have ever followed a tv series or soap opera the feeling of I wish I could watch next weeks episode right now or I wish it was Monday tomorrow on Friday LOL. It is addictive a must read series. I will start reading book 6 right away I wonder what Sienna will get into next.

The battle is upon us in book #5. Sienna had been made the group leader of Kat, Scott and Reed. The pieces are being put into place. We find out who is the leader of Operation Stanchion, but who is he really? Is Omega sending out the troops? So much is happening in this book. The characters are being better developed. (Wow! Old Man Winter) Why am I crying so much? Does this book live up to the meaning of Omega? Things don't seem right to me! Deception, betrayal, things gone so wrong. I'm too invested to give up now. I've got to endure to the end. Sienna!!!...Recommend...Yes! Please try to read books #1- #4 first if only to get background information and get better understanding. After thought...I do love all the movie references Mr. Crane has put in the Girl in the Box series. Funny at times.

This is such a delightful series of compelling characters. I started out with a box of 3 and had to have more. V book actually invoke such an emotional response from me it was unexpected. I must admit that I have no words to express the commentary on which author put at the end of the book. Definitely unique approach and I loved every minute of it.

TO My Sci-fi people this series will not disappoint..... you will laugh and cry the best read I've had in a while and the twist and turns keep you wanting more. I think they should turn this into a sci-fi series I would definitely make sure in watching

I LOVE this series and I've never read this genre before. I can't stop reading these books. Only complaint is that the author broke the series up into too many books. It's unnecessary. Unfortunately I'm hooked, so I will keep on buying and reading.

Are you a public speaker or a business professional that gives presentations, looking for a book to help you become a better speaker? Look no further than OWN THE ROOM: Business Presentations That Persuade, Engage & Get Results. Co-authored by David Booth, Deborah Shames and Peter Desberg, this is one of the best books I've found for speakers. The trio are the founders of Eloqui, a communication consulting firm.I was amazed at how many practical and applicable practices I found in this book. From giving a thirty-second elevator speech to a full-blown day-long training session, readers will find countless ways to improve their speaking skills. The eleven chapters cover just about every aspect of business presentations. The first four chapters; Intention, Roles, Premier and Finale, cover the construction of your speech. There are so many things covered here that are so often overlooked. For example, most business presentations seek to educate; however, as pointed out, educating causes people to think; persuading motivates them to act. These four chapters alone are worth much more than the price of this book, but we're just getting started. The next few chapters cover a variety of topics such as building a better narrative, overcoming stage fright, making multiple person presentations and grammar usage. Then we get to what I believe is the best chapter in the book; The Power Point Revival. We've all sat through, and have probably been guilty of giving, less than stellar power point presentations. This chapter gives the reader countless ways to improve power point presentations.Imagine giving your next power point presentation without the use of a continuous flow of bullet points, but rather with an array of eye catching photos that work in harmony with your speech and that keep the audience riveted to your presentation. I love the analogy used of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach where music is composed with two separate melodies played at the same time. Although each melody by itself is beautiful, they intertwine. They support and lift each other creating a whole far greater than the sum of its parts. At any moment in time the notes from the different melodies are in harmony with each other. Isn't that the way Power Point slides should be integrated into your speech? If you give Power Point presentations, don't give another one until you read chapter 9 of this book!Chapter 10 looks at being memorable and focuses on how the mind interprets things. Giving an extraordinary presentation is worthless if your audience doesn't remember what you've told them. By understanding memory process, you will understand better how to craft and deliver your speech so more information is easily retained. Chapter 11 wraps it all up into a nice, neat package. There are a lot of books available on becoming a better speaker. This one focuses specifically on the business speaker and is one of the best books I have seen on this topic. I highly recommend this to anyone who gives business presentations.

I'm a marketing consultant who often leads meetings, gives presentations, and tries to convince others to follow my recommnedations. I'm always open to learning new ways to be more effective and more comfortable in all sorts of business situations and so I've read my share of business/sales books and have attended many corporate training sessions. What's great about Own The Room is that it's not the typical business book "fluff" that has one idea and fills 300 pages giving examples of that idea. It offers chapter after chapter of smart, practical advice that I started using right away.I also liked that the authors don't prescribe a one-size-fits-all list of "must-do's" for speakers. Instead, they tell you how to be more effective using your own individual talents and strengths. That was far more comfortable for me and more useful to me in my day-to-day work.If you want to up your game in terms of effective communications, get this book.

Remember in your childhood being asked to perform a musical instrument, or speak in front of a group of adults. What a strange, awkward experience, and how could you deliver without choking up?"Own the Room" brings you three high-quality mentors, a theater actor + director, a film producer + director, and a clinical psychologist. These three mentors guide you to bring out your magic and personalize each element of your presentation. Also, you learn to tailor your story for your audience and circumstances. You learn to speak from the heart, to deliver your compelling story, and engage your audience to the very last pause."Own the Room" is filled with practical actions to engage, compel, and be very meaningful to your audience. This book should be required reading to communicate successfully, effectively and economically. In addition, David and Deborah train people to present successfully under different circumstances.Their interactive classes bring "Own the Room" to life and they change your life for the better.

I like this book. It's concise, easy to read and full of useful tips for business presentation; from your body language to the tone of your voice and to the use of PowerPoint slides. But most importantly, there I s a great advice consistently repeated in the book: you are the star, PowerPoint is your backup.Overall a good book to read.

Fantastic!! I implemented some tactics even just from the overview before I bought the book and it made such a difference to a presentation. I now can't wait for my next large audience presentation to put into practice what I have learnt.

Turn your audience into your partners. This book encourages you to put your audience first; they are the Starring Actor, you are the supporting cast. The contents works for meetings and conference calls as well as presentations.

As a professional speaker myself, I really didn't learn all that much but for someone who hasn't been there, done that, it's excellent. There's so much valuable information that all presenters can benefit from that I do recommend this book.

This book gives you great insights on delivering great presentation. The examples are easily explained and a good book to read

I get a Pooh Bear wall calendar every year, and this one is great! I love the colors, and that the calendar part is clear and easy to read. I love looking at it. It also came on time which I appreciated since I bought it after 2019 had already began.
