I've recently completed an annotated bibliography of books on grief for the hospice where I volunteer. I read over twenty and if I were asked which one I'd recommend first, it would be this one.One of the problems in writing a book is that you are writing to readers who are stressed, torn in different directions, and may have trouble focusing. So it's important to get a lot across in an accessible way. Wolfelt does this.Each "Touchstone" is clearly discussed with concrete suggestions of how to work through it. The Touchstones more or less follow a chronological order, though he stresses the grief process is not linear, and that there are not stages that one works through, one, two, three.Wolstone has written a companion book on keeping a journal and makes a number of suggestions of what might write. I know from personal experience how helpful writing can be in dealing with grief, though I am not oriented toward journals. If you are, I think it would be worthwhile checking out that book as well as reading this.

Having lost my husband, I feel a huge loss and void in my life. I was frantic to find some way to get through the abyss...and this book was recommended to me. Initially, I found the author to be very repetitive, so reading it was somewhat tedious. As I reached Touchstone Four, I noticed that what he was saying really spoke to me and described what I am feeling/dealing with pretty accurately. I realize now that Wolfelt's repetitive style is designed for people who are grieving and mourning, because the grieving process causes loss of concentration and decreased ability to retain information. You are numb with grief and yet your brain is in over-drive, so the repetition helps what he is saying to really sink in.I am using this book as the "course outline and textbook", so to speak, for a bereavement group that I am attending. The book and it's accompanying journal are great for giving each member of our group focus on the tasks and issues at hand and keeping us from wandering aimlessly in the confusion of our grief. I have attended groups after other losses in my life, but this one is the best because it does have strong guidance and direction from both the author and our chaplain.A friend of mine just lost his father...when I am finished with it, I think I will pass this book along to him.

I was really looking forward to this book after reading an excerpt a while back on the physical symptoms of grief, I could relate to that. However, when the book arrived I went cold. His chapter on caring for the physical self I found to be didactic and self righteous ( stop smoking now! stop eating fat), and ridiculous (have a relationship with a physician, laugh a lot (!!??) --- After having known Stephen Levine in the 1980s who, by the way was a profound teacher in death and dying and grieving and who would roll tobacco during breaks at his workshops, I thought who is this Mr. Wolfelt? Grieving is such a huge and transforming experience, the grieving one should be totally accepted...and accepting of herself, no matter what "bad habits" they have...be it sugar or tobacco or weed or processed food or booze....whatever! Grief is a raw and deep and painful journey into the unknown and not a time to be preached to or told what you must or must not do. I trust my instincts when they tell me parts of this book had a didactic tone. I am losing my mother these days and I don't need this book.

I bought this book for my brother-in-law after his wife passed. He has thanked me every time he sees me and shows me excerpts from the book that have helped him understand and cope with his loss. He has asked me to send a copy to his son, too. I understand that there are several churches that are using it as a teaching guide for others who are suffering losses.

A special book for someone grieving that would be an ideal gift to give. Anything Alan Wolfelt has written and published I have gleaned a wealth of understanding. Highly recommend this along with the corresponding journal. Those IN the grieving process be exceptionally patient with the process and those that are family and friends of someone in "this place" think before you speak. Encourage and be there for the person grieving. Being ignored is painful and cruel.

After searching for over a year for a book to soothe my grieving heart after the death of my husband last May...this book is it. It doesn't give tons of grief stories....or suggest to me how to grieve...it allows me to accept my grieving as unigue to me and offers comfort that what I am experiencing is part of the "journey" that I am on...and I am not "crazy" nor do I need to "get over it"...It is what it is and I am encouraged to feel my husband's presence AS I feel the waves of loss and sadness...

Of all the books I've read since my son was killed (and there are plenty), this one would be at the top of the recommendation list for the bereaved to read. It thoroughly covers every facet of grief that one will ever experience along the journey. For once, I had my own worst time of day acknowledged and explained. In our mourning-avoiding society, this book validates and fortifies the bereaved. In addition, Ph.D. Wolfelt adeptly and compassionately shows the way to integrate grief into a positive transformation toward a new life of hope as our loved ones would want us to live.(Note: Knowing the nature of grief as it is, I suggest this book might be best read months after an intense loss. Otherwise you may find yourself reading each sentence or paragraph over and over trying to make sense of it due to the inherent lack of concentration caused by the severe assault to the mind as well as the heart. Where ever you are along the grief journey, it is never too late to read this book and begin proactive healing.)

This book helped me to know that I wasn't going crazy. Grief is complex and can sometimes make me feel off balance. I particularly appreciated the chapter on dispelling misconceptions about grief in Touchstone 2. The whole book is worth a read and I felt better upon finishing it. I still have grief but I feel reassured that I am also on a healing path.

Just finished reading all the chapters in preparation for the 98-365 Server Administration Certification test.The Bad: Terms are introduced and not defined. Many of the descriptions come straight from Microsoft's pages and are too succinct. It was like they were just copied and pasted with lots left out. The answers to the chapter questions for Chapters 6 and 7 are switched around. The author refers to servers with personal pronouns. Uses "your server" frequently. Just not well written in that respect. That is not unusual in Computer textbooks though. It is a server and the server, not my server or yours. It belongs to the organization, unless you are a sole proprietor. That is just not how professional text books are written. This book would be more suited to someone who has been doing Sys Admin work for a while. It is like it is written for people already in the biz who know most of it and just need a review. Active Directory and Group Policy could have used more discussion.The Good: Most of the hands on instructions are great. Let's face it, if you are doing Server Administration, you must know how to get around the Server. That was my favorite part of the book. Having clear instructions for adding a role, service or feature, etc. You will know your way around the server. The binding is good. The last Microsoft course book that I used fell apart, literally. This one is holding together quite well. The pages are not shiny and distracting. The author included an appendix on Group Policy and with Shortcuts as extras. I must admit I have not spent much time reviewing those as I am prepping for the Certification.For me, I use multiple resources to study for these Certification tests. I have the 98-366 and the A+ under my belt. His writing style was a nice complement to the ITPro.TV videos, the MOAC MS text, the Udemy coursework and some of the Lynda coursework I have watched. Will update once I am done passing the 98-365.

Good depth material for exam coverage but lacks a basis level starting place like the McGraw Hill Server+ All in One book for the hands on exercises, if this is the starting point to Microsoft Server enthusiasts it needs to start off will Step 1 for IT professionals trying to move in to the Server administration world. If that is the case it needs to have a self-paced Lab manual with it. Could use a section on Data center layouts and a case scenario of project instructions installing a Microsoft Server environment from scratch for a enterprise size network for 500, 1000 users. The install process of each role in its respective steps other than that everything is great for exam practice and material.I say this cause chapter 2 material gets a bit confusing when it switches to Basic level install to Deployment capture to Server migration. Start with the first server roles needed for a Fresh data center install.

This book is adequate along with experience with the OS and some practice exams online to pass the MTA 98-365. I was able to pass with relative ease after reading this book through and doing the practice questions included with the other things I mentioned. Recommended for sure.

I worked in a High School. The School Librarian had this book. Students having a bad day would go in to the library and she would tell them to sit down, relax and then would give them this book to read. From the boy who didn't make the team, to the girl whose boyfriend broke up with her, to the student who just blew a test or had a bad day, she would make the student comfortable and have them read this book. Within a few minutes, the student sitting quietly reading this book would calm down, smile and/or laugh. So, when my Grandson fell off the swing at school and broke his elbow and arm last week, I got him this book. He is 8 and he loved it. He giggled all through it and suddenly the world wasn't such a bad place afterall :-)Kathy

This works but beware - if you try to use it with acne patches it creates a bullseye effect which seems to be semi-permanent. In essence, I now have a noticeably lighter circular mark on my face in the shape of the acne patch with a dark center due to the acne scar :(I'm really hoping this goes away over time because it's super embarrassing. I think the cream is good overall, but considering it's caused an unwanted/unsightly mark on my face and I have no idea how long it will last, I was pretty disappointed. I bought this to make my hyperpigmentation better, NOT more noticeable. I feel like the label should come with a warning so no one else makes the same mistake.

I purchased this book for my six year old based on the rave reviews and because it was on her reading list. She did not like it and I do not blame her. It was not positive at all and even the ending was depressing.

We pass this around the office as an "award" for the person who has had the crappiest day/week. A lovely pick-me-up!

My great grandson started kindergarten this year. He has a quick response to things that gets him into trouble. This book about Alexander allows you to explain Alexander's problems and that there are consequences to his actions. It's a great bedtime, let's talk book for little people with a quick a response button.

That was the phrase that my 3 and a half year old used one day. He'd gotten in trouble at daycare. He had an 'accident' right after we got home. He broke a toy. He was cranky and awful. So, at the end of my rope, I pulled him into my lap and asked him to tell me what was wrong, and he said that phrase. He looked me in the eyes and said, 'Momma, today- I am Alexander'. And then he started to cry.I had this book when I was a little girl, and loved it, so I of course had to have it for my son. I remembered it comforting me. I remember commiserating with poor Alexander, who was so set upon.And, my wonderful little boy finds the same comfort in Alexander as I once did. The knowledge that- sometimes, the world is not a fair place. Sometimes everything just seems to go wrong.This book gives us a wonderful starting point for a conversation. We talk about how Alexander's choices are making things harder for himself. We talk about how some things just aren't going Alexander's way. We talk about things that Alexander could have done instead, to perhaps make things better, instead of worse. And, one of the most important things that we talk about is how, no matter what, I love him. Even when everything goes wrong. Even when he isn't acting very nice. Nothing that he can do can make me love him any less, he can only make me love him more. And- tomorrow is another day. We can always go to bed, and try to have a better day, and make better choices, tomorrow.I read some of the negative reviews on this book, and they really confuse me. Are children not supposed to have bad days? Or, if they have bad days, are they not supposed to be able to talk about them? The safety of cuddling up with Momma and being able to talk about how everything is going wrong is one of the greatest gifts a child can be given. I can't make the world a wonderful place- but I can help my son deal with it, when it isn't. Alexander won't bring world peace, but I know that it helped my little boy explain to me why he was acting so terrible- he was really just sad, and needed me to understand that he felt the world was unfair sometimes.So, while I can hope against hope that my son will always have good days, and that when faced with upsetting things he will act with nothing but smiles and good cheer- I realize that I am raising a person, and not a machine. Some days are like that. Even in Australia.

I purchased Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day to read to my little girls at bedtime.This book is beautifully illustrated. My girls loved the story, and the book is a nice size with quality weight paper pages. I think the little ones can kind of relate to all the terrible things that happen to Alexander in the book, and it's a nice way to kind of let them know that sometimes their grumpy feelings are normal. This is now one of our favorite nightly stories, and they ask for it often.

just another book, you have to commit to this for a life time or you will just put the weight back on, found this out through a friend who tried it.

I am a southern girl. Understand, we FRY everything! I am a chocolate gravy and biscuits with butter, kind of girl. But in 2010, I was diagnosed with RA and several other autoimmune diseases. I existed for the next 5 or 6 years, until I decided I'd had enough to the horrible side effects of the drugs used to manage the conditions. I found this book as I was searching for answers. In 2013, I tried this diet for 6 months, when I didn't feel it was happening quickly enough, I gave up and went back to my longing for the former foods. Finally in 2015, I decided to commit long term. After more than a year, I am off all my RA meds! I'm feeling better without out them than I did on them! If you can commit, and push past the initial food cravings you can succeed on this plan. Also, as a side effect of this plan, I have lost over 40 lbs, and have been told I look about ten years younger, but my favorite compliment is that I "look healthy!" I think sometimes we need a reason why, and when you have a serious health condition, that can be the "why." I really don't cook much anymore, but I have learned to enjoy foods that I used to tolerate, and I can tolerate the ones I used to hate! My enjoyment of the food I eat has increased greatly. Just try it for 6 weeks, it just may change your life!

So here's the thing. I want to write a bad review because that is what my toxic food addicted body/brain wants me to do and I almost gave in and did it. Then I stopped, ate some toxic food and went to bed. Woke up and finished the book and then decided to write the truth without regards to my fight against the American toxic diet.I want to keep eating poorly because it tastes good. I want to eat cheese and as much as I can and at anytime. I want to continue eating luscious breads anytime I want and as much as I want. I want to eat sweets without reserve. I love butter. Cereal and milk. And pizza.And that is just the short list.And I'm miserable with my weight because of my excess and eating whatever I want. Breads, sweets, dairy, meat sometimes. But my toxic body revels in it. And I am normal, unfortunately. And I want to stay normal at all costs. And yet normal is miserable, for me, at least.So reading this book for the second time I am faced with the fact that in order to be where I want to be: healthy and fit, I can either change or stay the same or be somewhere in the middle. I usually go for the somewhere in the middle and then end up going back to the same, but I never really change.This book is about change. It is about eating mainly vegan - no matter what the other reviewers say - it really is about veganism. I have always been jealous of vegans = because it is the hardest thing a normal eating person can be.This book advises against all animal products - no matter what other reviewers say. Furhman states over and over that animal products are bad for the human body, toxic to the liver, great for cancer and fat, bad for humans. Yes, he does say that over and over, and then a sentence will come up here and there stating you can have a little fish if you are this kind of person or you can have some meat twice a week if you are that person, but really, he wants you to be vegan. No animals products. Sigh. NO CHEESE.He hates cheese. Really, it really bugs him. Not once does he ever say, you can have cheese if you are that kind of person or this kind of person. I guess cheese is really bad. Uggh. My toxic body is crying - don't stop the cheese, please. I just had a cheese sandwich - luscious bread, too much cheese, swiss and cheddar, some lettuce, a bit of processed turkey, mayo, mustard, italian dressing. Sometimes I add tomato and cucumber (to appease Furhman).He states over and over a lb of greens and a lb of vegetables per day. He does tend to mix things up and kind of says one thing then changes it a little then goes back to what he said earlier, so he goes in circles at times to where you are not really sure what you should do. That does sort of drive you crazy in trying to figure out what exactly you should do. But I do know this is what he really is trying to say: to be healthy, you must stop the bread, stop the pasta, stop the sweets, stop the cheese, stop the milk, stop the meat, stop the fish, stop oils, stop diet sodas, stop over eating - just stop.To lose weight: eat vegetables, eat fruit, beans and nuts in smaller amounts, oatmeal is acceptable also (I think). Again, it depends upon the page.He does sell a lot of products on his website and they are expensive. But it all looks healthy and good.If you are strong enough this diet/way of life, can really change your life, I truly believe this. I didn't give it 5 stars because it is so restrictive - but that is not necessarily bad, I'm just kinda weak battling my food demons. And I must be jealous of Furhman, in some way, so the penalty is 4 stars when he probably, most likely, deserves 5.

You might wonder if this diet works for people who are already vegan. The answer is yes. I have been vegan for 12 years, and I thought I had already changed from being a "junk food" vegan to a healthy vegan, but I was wrong. I lost 10 pounds in 1 month, >20 pounds in 3 months, improved my cholesterol, and have maintained that. I didn't even know I had that much to lose! I am lower than I thought even possible for me and might have to change my driver's license. ;)The main differences between this diet and what I was previously eating: no oils, better portion control with respect to nuts, limited carbs. I went a little beyond the recommendations by limiting my fruit to max 4 pieces, often less, because some fruit do have a lot of sugar (depends on the fruit).I consider myself a very experienced dieter, but for whatever reason, after gaining 10 pounds during a stressful time at work, I found it difficult to lose the weight. In fact, I tried for several months but couldn't budget the scale more than a small and quickly-reversed amount. Then I found this program, and the rest is history.I particularly recommend this book to people who would otherwise be susceptible to crash diets and cravings. Dr. Fuhrman makes the very convincing point that if you are eating adequate nutrients, you'll avoid cravings. A low-calorie diet that *doesn't* pay attention to nutrients will just set you up for a restrict-binge-restrict-binge cycle. I was scared of triggering myself, psychologically, but that didn't happen on this diet and I felt a lot of energy. I don't follow his plan 100% -- in particular, I more severely limit fruit because of all the sugar and I eat more nuts for satiety -- but I've lost 25 pounds since starting and maintained without going crazy. Compared to my highest weight *ever*, I'm 35 pounds lower. In another 6 months, when I qualify, I will sign up for the National Weight Control Registry of people who have lost >30 pounds and maintained it for at least a year. :) By the way, it is so much easier to run at a lower weight! And it's good for my joints and back, as well. I'm very happy.
