This is an original, imaginative, and well-researched tale that takes the reader on an undersea adventure that spins wildly out of control. It brought to mind Sphere, Andromeda Strain, and other sci-fi I’ve read and seen on film. It is filled with suspense, a mystery, and action. It should appeal especially to science fiction fans.It is told in first person, present tense by Dexter Knight, member of a group of rogue undersea adventurers with skills in exploration, engineering, artificial intelligence, autonomous undersea drones, minisubs, and other technical and arcane arts. Their motivation appears to be getting rich, but for all the risks they take and trouble they get into, they must also love the work and be in it for the fun and adventure. (Just like pirates.)The plot: After surreptitiously recovering valuable artifacts from famous undersea wreck, the team and their toys (technologies) are shanghaied by a mysterious organization with guns and muscle to make another recovery but from a seemingly impossible depth. They commence a search, monitoring their site from the surface, encounter a strange, shiny object roaming the ocean and spreading havoc, and seek to understand it. Much action follows, involving deep submarine dives, helicopters, dolphins, torpedoes, flashing red lights and alarms, shape charges, free diving, a mutiny, and more. Sound exciting? It is.

Best Kindle book I've read in quite awhile. Well developed characters, interesting plot, fast-moving pace. Kept me up way too late at night. Had to force myself to stop reading. The writer is exceptional and has a great ability to inject both humor and cultural references. Just don't expect all your questions to be answered. My only major criticism was that the book needed a careful edit to clean up grammatical mistakes before it was printed. There were too many and they were distracting.

Free Drive takes you to an epic adventure underwater uncovering mysteries instead of diving on titanic wreck and search for priceless relic. This is an awesome story that circles around Dexter and two of his friends who are too smart to get into the bottom of the sea and retrieve fine china without diving in. But when a new recruit betrayed them and sold them to this selfish organization, Dexter and his team found themselves miles and miles beneath the Marianas Trench. Great story, I don't want to be the spoiler of the event, find out what happened to Dexter and his team. This book is absolutely entertaining!

"Free Dive" is an interesting book. For starters, it's a delightful mishmash of themes. Our protagonist, Dexter Knight, and his comrades are a fun group to follow through the story as the plot twists and turns. And does it ever twist. From one moment to the next he's elbowed into working for an organization with mysterious interests. While Dexter doesn't know what the organization has in mind to do, he's pretty certain they don't have Dexter's interests in mind at all. Naturally, he resists the compulsion to cooperate, but there's something about the task they've put him too that's... odd... I won't spoil it for you. This is something you need to experience yourself. There was a fair amount of humor, which I did also appreciate. All in all, it was a good read.

I found this book to be fast-paced and also easy to follow and understand. I read mostly mysteries and suspense, and this book had loads of both. Dexter and his partners decide to dive for more than mere china. They want to make some serious money. A secret organization hijacks them on a mission to the bottom of the sea. They are in over their heads. Through many twists and turns and mounting danger, they uncover a mysterious object that tops all others. One of their employees had double crossed them. Will Dexter and friends follow the right path or the path to greed? So many possibilities. So much ocean. Read and find out.

But horrendous editing. Great story, but completely unbelievable dialog. And really horrendous editing. Not hating, just being honest. Read it, you'll see what I mean. Good, but man...

Disappointing on so many levels. The spelling and formatting errors were almost a welcome distraction from this hot mess of a story.

Great sci-fi thriller that combine my love for tech, gadgets, adventure, and the ocean! Fun character interaction as well as the underdog good guys doing their best to do the right thing against the odds. Never underestimate the power of smart nerdy geeks! :) Just loved this read! WELL DONE!

From the Back Cover

“Belongs in the bookshelf of every cruising vessel.”―Blue Water Sailing “If you are serious about that extended voyage, read The Voyager’s Handbook.”―Sailing “Every now and then a new voice emerges in the world of sailing literature that stands out, a voice that is both clear and of lasting quality. The appearance of such a new voice is something of an event, and that’s what we’d call the publication of The Voyager’s Handbook.”―Blue Water Sailing This inspirational and comprehensive manual leads you step by step through every aspect of choosing, planning, and following the voyager’s life. Using three example boats representing three cruising lifestyles―Simplicity, Moderation, and Highlife―Beth Leonard helps make your bluewater dreams come true, whether you’re sailing on a shoestring or a CEO’s pension. Starting with the things you can’t do without―an enthusiastic crew, a seaworthy boat, and, of course, money―Leonard offers sage advice on how to select crewmembers who are truly committed to the voyage, how to choose the right boat for you, and how to find just the right approach to financing your voyage and making the most of every dollar spent. Managing life from a floating home and keeping that home livable, seaworthy, and safe requires you to become, among other things, the ship’s purser, engineer, doctor, cook, and cruise director. You’ll discover how to prepare for these new roles and put necessary equipment and arrangements in place before you untie your docklines. This exquisitely detailed guide also helps you master the skills you’ll need to handle a boat at sea with a small crew, including Weather forecasting Passage planning Watchkeeping Heavy-weather sailing Emergency management Midocean repairs Complete with dozens of easy-to-use graphs and tables for quick reference, along with the hard-won wisdom of experienced cruisers, The Voyager’s Handbook is the ultimate resource for anyone who is planning, preparing for, or just dreaming about a great adventure on the high seas. Since completing a three-year, 35,000-mile circumnavigation of the globe with her partner, Evans Starzinger, in 1995, Beth Leonard has lectured widely, written for leading sailing magazines, and outfitted a new 50-foot aluminum cutter aboard which she and Evans once again set sail in 1999. They logged an additional 50,000 miles at sea over the following six years, much of it in the world’s high latitudes, including Labrador, Iceland, Scotland, Cape Horn, and east through the Southern Ocean to Australia. See the world from your boat “A voyaging handbook with soul. Beth Leonard is a pleasure to read. No one else has captured the yin and yang of voyaging so well.”―Caribbean Compass “Required reading. Beth Leonard is a fresh and authoritative voice.”―SAIL “In her own journey, Beth Leonard has become not only a wonderful sailor, but also a fine teacher. I know this because I’ve learned so much from her.”―from the Foreword by Herb McCormick, Latitude 38 and Cruising World "When other boats scurry back to their berths just ahead of the setting sun, you want to keep sailing. You want your tracks to be the only ones on a perfect sand beach of a deserted tropical island. You want to see the green flash, taste coconut milk from the husk, watch the fish dance at dusk, and share a feast with new friends from other cultures. This book can help you get there. It is written for coastal and limited offshore cruisers who want to make the transition to long-term voyaging. I have tried to capture everything I wish I had known on that June day when we first sailed out from under Newport Bridge.”―from the Prologue by Beth Leonard

#53,345 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This book explores the choices faced and preparations made when preparing for extended travels at sea. At its best, it describes the author's voyages and the preparations for them. Some of statistics and averages collected in interviews covering roughly 200 other cruising boats are also insightful.A great deal of space is given to the preparations and voyages of three fictional couples that represent the endpoints and middle, financially, of couples contemplating a cruise. These are presented as composites of various cruising couples the author has met. I did not find this writing approach to be especially entertaining or informative, with the most financially well-off couple coming off as something of a parody of themselves. The biggest drawback of the book is that the revised edition is now over 10 years out of date. Technology has improved in some areas to the point where the advice presented no longer applies.

Its a very good book just as others have said. I recommend you avoid the Kindle edition because many important graphs and tables are such low resolution they are hard to read. Such a shame because otherwise its an excellent reference. Also, the book is now ten years old and becoming a bit dated. Hopefully they will publish a new edition soon.

I certainly got a lo out of the book as Beth is very thorough. You can tell she has lived through it and wants to help so not everyone else has to go through the same.I am more of a study and go figure it out. At times her thoroughness seemed a bit much for me so I just skimmed over parts. More than anything it taught me that everyone will have a method that they found to work for them. It's really nice that she does some comparisons of types of sailors (simplicity, moderation, high life). I found myself more along the lines of the simplicity.Really worth while if you look to be/live on a sailboat. Otherwise you will feel like you are reading a textbook. Which for me was just fine. I will definitely use it as a reference in the future.

I've spent the last few years working through the sailing section at my local library. Over that time, I've read dozens of technical sailing books, many of them quite good, and more than a few targeted at the same audience as this one. I bought this book because it wasn't available to me, even through Inter-Library Loan. After reading it cover-to-cover, I'm amazed that no library in Minnesota has a copy. It's excellent, and clearly belongs in the top tier of sailing-related books that I've read. It's well-researched, well-written, well-organized, and well-though-out, and a bargain at only $26 for the hardcover. When and if I can finally afford to buy a boat and voyage somewhere, this book will be one of my major references.

I have over three dozen books on sailing, and this book is by far the most useful I own. I can't say enough good things about it. Every page is filled with golden nuggets of knowledge. Don't buy this book to learn how to sail, there are plenty of books out there to teach you the basics of sailing, buy this book if you already know how to sail but have always lacked for having that seasoned experience salt filling in all the tiny gaps of knowledge that can they themselves have learned the hard way. That is what Beth does, The entire volume is filled with tips that will make passage making that much easier. As I prepare for my first Pacific crossing in two months, I find myself repeatedly coming back to this book to guide me on the best practices of passage making. If you ever plan on making a passage, this book will give you back its purchase price a hundred times over just within the first few chapters. Get it, absorb it, and tell others!

Great book for any one who wants to go cruising. I have cruised extensively, read a ton of books on the subject, and worked as a marine tech for 5 years. This is the best book of its kind for someone who wants to know the basics and how to make decisions on which boat and what type of equipment and preparation you need to make. Even with my experience, I still go to it to do research on areas I want more on.

As Slocum and Nate Heffeschoff brought us the romance of sailing, and the Hiscock's told about details related mostly to wooden sailboats and seamanship, and the Pardey's are living examples of the purity of sailing, BETH Leonard has taken probably thousands of hours of painstaking research and personal experience, interviews of hundreds of other sailors, equipment manufacturers, analysis of industry studies, psychology, modern day websites and everything in between and things you may never have thought of and brought them all together in this ABSOLUTELY MUST HAVE AND USE reference and guide for sailors or would be sailors. It is not enough to simply have the romance in your heart and some experience and have read a few adventures of other sailors. No, you will not be prepared to voyage and your chances of success and real long term enjoyment will have the odds stacked against you.I as so many others have found THIS BOOK, this one book alone, takes you by the hand, and leads you through the entire experience of the sailing life, right down to the smallest detail that you should think of now ideally rather than later.Take the advice of many before you, that this book is an essential reference and should be one of the very first you own and read cover to cover, if you want to do more than be an arm chair sailor. There is little romance of sailing in this book, but it is fun because of the personalities of the author and her mate. This book has information that will keep you safe, both with your budget before you go, and with your life itself once you leave, both very essential if you want the time and freedom later to simply relax and think about the romance of the sea. Thanks very much Beth............... I owe you a debt of gratitude and hope we cross paths someday.Allan L

I enjoyed reading of Ayser’s struggles to become an Arab Muslim in America. She approaches the subject with humor and candor. When Ayser was only three years old her family moved from Baghdad, Iraq to Columbus, Ohio. So Ayser went along with them since as she said “legal emancipation from your parents isn’t an option in Iraq until the age of seventy-four, and even then only if you’re married.” At the age of three culture shock is not such a major event. Two years later they moved to Lexington, Kentucky where Ayser was frequently called “Ayser Eraser”. (Hey, a kid I knew was named “Horace Lanier” – Need I tell you what he was called?) Her family continued to move around for several years, with each locale providing further adaptation challenges.Ayser writes of what it means to be an Arab and what it means to be an American. The transition from Iraqi Arab to American-Iraqi Arab often resulted in the feeling of being at the wrong end of the table. “You know that feeling of being at the wrong end of the table? Like you’re at a party but all the good stuff is happening out of earshot?” Always trying to fit in yet always feeling left out.And if life wasn’t hard enough, along came 9/11. She now feels isolated in her own country, wondering why people can’t recognize the difference between a terrorist and a practicing believer of Islam. The chapter titles should be enough to get you to take a look – “Land of the Free, Home of the McMuffin”, “Sibling Rivalry, or: How to Stop Your Sister from Getting the Western Name”, “Iraqis Take Forever to Say Goodbye”, and “You Can’t Blame Everything on Your Period; Sometimes You’re Going to Be a Crazy Bitch: and Other Advice from Mom”.As an adult she asks herself what she would tell her younger self. I loved her comment that “I would also tell her not to discount her time spent at the wrong end of the table, because sometimes you have to spend time at the wrong end in order to appreciate being at the right end.’Do be sure to read her footnotes as they provide much of the candor – and are quite funny.

In the mix of all the thrillers that I have been reading lately, this book came at the perfect time to read something different with a eye-opening look at a woman's story of what it means to be an immigrant in the land of America!Ayser Salman came to America with her family at age three, she soon experiences things that some kids shouldn't have to see like the incident at the Ohio daycare to growing up Muslim in America and abroad. It's not until after the 9/11 attacks that she sees a different America due to her being Muslim. But even through all she had experienced in her short life, she finally came to a place that she can embrace her Arab American self without judgement.I will warn you though before reading this book yourself, it will make you laugh out loud so hard during certain points and have tears for what happens during other parts. My only problem with this book, I loved the whole concept of having the end of each chapter with a deeper look at certain parts but I also got lost for not keeping up with the numbers for what had happened during those chapters that it got frustrating to the point that I just stopped reading the very end of the chapter. Good concept but it should have been in the chapter rather at the end!Overall, this was a good read that will make everyone realize that not all Muslims are alike, like the chapter when the family moved overseas to a highly strict Muslim country that not even Ayser was prepared for. It's a comic relief about a real family with real problems while trying to live life, the best way they know how too.Thank You to Ayser Salman for sharing your memoir with the world!!I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book from Edelweiss!

** Trigger warning for xenophobia, Islamophobia, and violence against women.)Ayser Salman spent the first three years of her life in Baghdad, Iraq – until her parents, both pharmacists, fled the “dictatorial regime of what was about to become Saddam Hussein’s Iraq” for the frigid climes of Columbus, Ohio. This would be the first of many moves: Along with her younger brother Zaid and a new sister, Lameace, Ayser and her family moved again when she was eight (Lexington, Kentucky), and again a year and a half later – this time to Saudi Arabia, where Ayser would attend an all-girls’ school. The Salmans found their way back to Lexington in time for Ayser’s junior year of high school: “a time of proms, underage drinking, and lots of teenage hormones.” Upon graduation, Ayser attended the University of Kentucky and, after a brief stint as a local news producer, the graduate film program at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. Now in her 40s, Ayser is a comedy writer, editor, and producer. All this moving around – not to mention rotating schools even when the family stayed put – could be enough to make anyone feel alienated. An outsider. A fish out of water. Or, in Ayser’s words, at wrong end of the table. Add to this the fact that Ayser was a brown Muslim girl in predominantly white Christian spaces. (Or, during her time in Saudi Arabia – the one period in her childhood when Ayser felt like she belonged – a somewhat liberal Westerner in a conservative Arab country.) After years of trying to blend in, disappear even, it wasn’t until her 30s and 40s that Ayser embraced her differences.THE WRONG END OF THE TABLE is a series of short essays and vignettes about Ayser’s experiences: being an immigrant (usually the only immigrant) trying to navigate the treacherous waters of elementary and high school; maintaining a social life (especially with boys) under the watchful eyes of her parents; grappling with depression and anxiety in adulthood; embracing her Muslim identity and becoming more politically active in the wake of 9/11 (and, later, during a Drumpf presidency); and dating in her 40s.I think I most enjoyed Ayser’s stories about her childhood in Columbus and Lexington, particularly as her Western sensibilities collided with her parents’ old school ways. For example, there’s the time a well-meaning boy at school gave Ayser a quarter:My father walks in and Mom shoves the quarter in his face.MOM: Talk to your daughter. A boy gave her this!Dad takes a moment to put on his bifocals and studies the offending item.DAD: Does he think you’re cheap? My mother looks at me, satisfied.DAD: He should have given you a silver dollar! Now, Mom is disgusted with me, the quarter, and Dad.The accounts of the Salmans’ time in Saudi Arabia are a little more harrowing; for instance, Ayser recounts the story of a classmate who tried for three years to escape her father’s custody and return to her mother in the States. That’s not to say that Ayser doesn’t mine these reservoirs for humor, either; to wit: Ayser’s very first time setting foot on Saudi Arabian soil:###We put our bags through the x-ray machine, and they were transported to a separate table where airport officials opened and searched them. This was before the age of prohibited liquids, so I couldn’t imagine what they would find that the x-ray hadn’t detected. A man wearing the traditional thawb and an official airport worker jacket eached into my bag, grabbed my Teen Beat magazine, and began combing through. Then, with a flick of his wrist, he tossed it in the trash behind him.“Wait!” I protested as my mother nudged me to be quiet. The man shook his head and said, “Haram.”Next, he found the loose magazine photos I had saved of Valerie Bertinelli lounging by a pool—I liked her hair in that picture and wanted to get mine styled in the same way. Nope. “Haram,” he said as he crumpled it up and tossed it aside. Finally, he got to my prized diary, a small pink book with a lock secured on it to hide all my nine-year-old secrets. On the cover was a picture of a cartoon boy and girl smooching, similar to what you’d find on a Hallmark card. Mr. Haram studied it for a few minutes as if he were debating asking me to unlock it.In Arabic, my mother said, “For children. She’s just a child.” That seemed to appease him. He put my diary back into my bag, but not before taking a sharpie and scribbling out the image of the boy and girl kissing on the cover.###I can only imagine my ten-year-old horror at having my diary manhandled and then defaced by a strange man.As someone who’s found herself newly single in her (early) 40s, I also enjoyed Ayser’s many (many) anecdotes about disastrous dates and failed relationships. (Can you even with that Charlie!?)In the forward, Reza Aslan discusses the importance of memoirs written by Muslim Americans to help shape the narrative about what it means to be “Americans who happen to come from Muslim backgrounds”; to combat the stereotypes and misinformation that have blossomed after 9/11 and the red hats’ hate-fueled Islamophobia. With increased visibility comes the potential to get it so very, tragically wrong; books like THE WRONG END OF THE TABLE help push back. The value in this cannot be understated.Yet, like so many humorous memories (Tiffany Haddish’s THE LAST BLACK UNICORN; Jenn Kirkman’s I KNOW WHAT I’M DOING AND OTHER LIES I TELL MYSELF; Tina Fey’s BOSSYPANTS; Amy Poehler’s YES PLEASE), THE WRONG END OF THE TABLE seems like it’s better suited for the audiobook format. Like, I only chuckled a handful of times while reading TWEOTB, but I’m pretty certain I would have been guffawing had I been listening to Ayser tell these stories out loud. And that’s usually the case: the narrator-slash-comedian’s inflections, embellishments, emphases, verbal quirks – all add a certain something to the retelling that you just can’t get from the written word. I would’ve loved to have heard Ayser’s impressions of her parents, as just one for instance. So if you have the opportunity to read the audiobook, take it! Trust me, they make commutes/dog walks/house cleaning/yard work go so much faster.

No spoilers:I’ll be honest, ever since Lucasfilm decided to set a “new precedent” for their Star Wars literature, relabeling the old as Legends and introducing the new as official canon, I haven’t been a huge fan of the books that have followed. Sure, some of them were okay, my favorites being A New Dawn, Aftermath, and Lost Stars. But I’ve waffled on which I liked more. While they were good, none of them really stood out as being my clear favorite. Well that is no longer the case.Bloodline is now, by far, my favorite Star Wars book in the canon, ranking as high as some of my absolute favorite books from the old Expanded Universe, now Legends. And that’s saying a lot. While I won’t dive into spoilers in this review, here are some of my thoughts to get started with.First of all, let’s talk politics, because the book certainly does . The Force Awakens had almost nothing to tell us about the political landscape of the universe, even less than we saw in the original trilogy. At least then we knew there was an Empire, an Emperor, a Senate that had been recently dissolved, etc. Bloodline takes place 6 years before The Force Awakens and it will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about the state of the galaxy prior to the events of the film. Now, the funny thing about politics is that it’s become almost something of a dirty word among some Star Wars fans, due largely to the backlash of the politically-charged prequel films. Fortunately, one of the best mediums to present politics is in book form; we can get inside the heads of the characters, and suddenly it becomes a game we can participate in. Bloodline does this to perfection, and I might add that students of early United States politics might find some of the political arguments familiar. But let’s move away from that and talk about characters. Princess Leia is the primary protagonist of the book, and Gray hit the nail right on the head. Everything about Leia, from her political views, to her pessimistic and impatient demeanor, to her relationships with other characters, represents realistic growth for her character from when we saw her in Return of the Jedi. Other characters, though not given the same spotlight as Leia, are quite interesting. Gray is able to present likable characters despite completely different viewpoints. Gray’s last Star Wars book, Lost Stars, did something similar by having the two main characters take opposite sides of the war between the Rebellion and the Empire. Both were likable, relatable, but still had completely opposing views. Perhaps the most likable character in Bloodline, besides Leia herself, was a senator who existed on the opposite side of the political spectrum from the princess.Lastly, if you’re a chronology fan like myself, you will find this book fascinating. The book is full of clues and events that will inform your viewing of The Force Awakens. Since these events are considered canon, we can rely on their accuracy. I won’t spoil anything here, but I promise that this book will change the dialogue that fans have about The Force Awakens, in a big way. It answers questions.Bloodline is literary gold even outside of the Star Wars universe. It’s one of the best science fiction books I have read. Bloodline makes you think, it makes you cry, it makes you want to jump up and down in fanboy/girl glee. The only thing it won’t do is make you stop reading. So the remaining question is: why are you still reading this review and not reading Bloodline?Review originally posted on my site: [...]

The nebulous political landscape of Episode VII is finally detailed in Gray's second Star Wars novel, Bloodline. We learn more about the New Republic's politics, the failings of the Senate which was only briefly mentioned in the Force Awakens novelization, and we finally get to see how Leia's character in the "new canon" differs from her Legends counterpart.Claudia Gray's first young adult SW novel, Lost Stars, was a surprise hit. Fans were ravenous for more and she delivers with Bloodline. While this book is very heavy with the politics, Gray manages to make it interesting with her deft writing and handling of them rather than tedious. There's plenty of action and humorous moments as well, Bloodline feels like a Star Wars adventure.I felt Leia was criminally underused in Episode VII, however I was unsure if she could be a strong character in her own solo novel. I was mistaken, the tight character focus on Leia was excellent. Gray weaves together some other multidimensional supporting characters but this book is all about Leia. She's jaded, having lost faith in the New Republic and we see her struggling to find her place in the galaxy. Her relationship with Han and Ben is lightly explorered, but best of all we see Leia as she was in the original trilogy. In action, taking charge, journeying around the Galaxy. Leia is struggling with her heritage, both as Vader's daughter and princess of the destroyed Alderaan... struggling to reconcile these roles.I'd highly recommend reading Bloodline, especially if you plan on seeing Episode VIII. No doubt some elements will play into the film as the director, Rian Johnson, contributed to the novel.

Of all of the new Star Wars novels, this one has surprised me the most. I love Star Wars and I love the characters and the beauty of the novels is how they expand on those characters. However, at the same time, in each novel I am looking for threads that help bind the movies together and fill in time gaps in the story line. To be honest, nearly every new canon novel so far has fallen short of this, until now. To call this essential reading for SW fans and for those looking for some explanation about events leading up to The Force Awakens, this is your book.Essentially, this novel helps fans understand two of the big questions we asked after The Force Awakens was released: where did the New Order come from and why did the New Republic allow the New Order to flourish if Princess Leia is pushing the Resistance? I don't want to give away too much of the book, but it is great and throws a wonderful political spin into the SW galaxy without making it all about Politics. This is a great novel that treats the character of Leia right (unlike the terrible comic book run) and adds to the Star Wars tapestry, filling in important gaps. Stop reading this review and start reading the novel!

Posselt's exploration of graduate admissions is both groundbreaking and fascinating. Everyone participating in selection processes, including those for admissions and hiring, should read this book!

Fascinating! Important read for anyone doing admissions.

Insightful and needed reading!

An invigorating read on the process of graduate school selection. A must read for any graduate student, would-be graduate student, or faculty member involved in admissions. It offers a frustrating evaluation of how the system currently works, but offers some ways we can change it for the better. This is the type of critical evaluation needed for higher education.

It took me a while to read this book because it gave me tremendous insight on almost every page, forcing me to take time-consuming notes throughout. Great book!

I'm an educational researcher and this has been one of the most impactful books within Higher Education. Posselt does a great job relaying what goes on in graduate admissions meetings. While it's interesting to read the back and forth she's captured, the overall pattern seen in these meetings is an unhealthy reliance on GRE scores, GPA, and the perceived pedigree of an applicant's undergraduate school. This has far reaching implications for graduates, those who make admissions decisions, and policy makers. Well done, Dr. Posselt!

5 year old loves it. Had fun doing all the different activities together

My four grandkids gave these books thumbs down. They recommend going to Wally and Family Dollar for better activity books. Two star rating for both books.Thanksgiving #1 - There are eight good drawing for the younger kiddos with plenty of large spaces for them to color easily. There are also blank pages in between each drawing, so if you're printing all of them at once, you need to select each page to get rid of the blanks. There are six comparison drawings, which were easy for my four 5- to 9-year-old grandkids to find the differences between the two drawings. Again, blank pages to cull. There's an answer key before the six simplistic Connect the Dots begin followed by their unnecessary answer key. Simplistic and the kids were quickly bored. Again, there's blank pages to cull.Next are four Count It, where the kiddos counted all the similar items on the page, followed by another unnecessary answer key and blank pages. Simplistic and boring, according to the kids. Next, six Find the Hidden Items, the answer key and more blank pages. The kids did all six without getting bored, but said they were too easy. Next. how to draw four simplistic items, (pie, leaf, turkey, pumpkin) with blank pages and boredom. The kids liked the drawings but didn't care for anything else. 2*Thanksgiving #2 - Starts with 14 pages (7 jokes per page) of cute, corny and some dumb turkey/Thanksgiving jokes. Some are older than me and I've been around a long time, but the kiddos liked some of them. There were many repeats of the same few jokes, filler?Has easy mazes (10 pages), word searches (10 pages), unscrambles (3 pages) and an answer key to all three. The unscrambles were easy to difficult depending on the age of the child. These are definitely for older children (>9), but they wouldn't be challenged by the rest of the activities. There are two blank pages and the rest are the answer key. The kids were bored after a couple of puzzles because they were so easy. I don't recommend this activity book after seeing how my four 5- to 9-year-old grandkids lost interest so quickly. 2*I found these two activity books on Booksprout.co.

"More Joel on Software" is exactly what it says. It's a follow-up on "Joel on Software", a collection of blog posts from Joel Spolskys well-known blog "Joel on Software". I thoroughly enjoyed the first collection of Joels posts and thus was looking forward to this. And... I was disappointed. It IS good, Joel is an excellent and funny author and his posts are interesting, but... it was not as good as the first collection of posts :) Is he running out of ideas? We'll see in "Even More Joel on Software" which ought to be ready in four years...Slight disappointment, but still enjoyed Joels latest collection of posts. Let me point out a few of his posts to give an idea what he covers. The first post "My First BillG review" was a great story in which Joel tells his experience with Bill Gates reviewing his spec for MS Excel (many years ago) and how Bill reacted to the spec and what impression it led to him. It's a nice post and gives an insight to the working of MS during that time."The Perils of JavaSchools" criticized the universities that uses Java as main languages for teaching computer science. Joel argues that developers do not learn "the hard parts" about programming when using a language like Java.In "Why are the MS Office File Formats So Complicated" Joel takes a look at the insanely large file format spec for Office files and explains why they became the way they are. Then he gives some advise on what to do when you want to read Office files (not write it yourself)In "Hitting the High Notes", Joel explores the productivity difference between developers from many different perspectives and argues that great developers are absolutely essential for great products. This was his main idea behind setting up his own business. He looks at productivity and quality from different perspectives. All in all, More Joel contains 300 pages with Joel blog posts. It's worth reading and I enjoyed it a lot. Joel has an "interesting perspective" on certain topics. Worth reading, but if you haven't read "Joel on Software" then I'd recommend to read that first.

Like its predecessor, "More Joel on Software", by Joel Spolsky, is a collection of essays that had been published in the "Joel on Software" blog. The quality of these essays is more uneven than in the first book, but there are nonetheless some true gems. In particular, Joel's essay that details a method for prioritizing candidate features for a new software release is by itself worth the price of the book. I also enjoyed his essay on the differences between custom software, consultant-ware, and shrink-wrap software, in part because it validated my opinion that working on shrink-wrap software is more demanding, more fun, and potentially more lucrative that any other software gigs.

As soon as I joined my MS program in UAB, one of my senior student recommended this series of Joel to me. I read the first and the second one with passion. Lot of information and I like most of them. One of the highlights I remember from this book is Part 1 that explains Managing people. I am following his recommendations for getting the right resource to do the job. And it is hard to get the right people always. Also he describes about the 3 management methods, which shed some light for me in managing my team. The one main thing I want to talk about Joel is his ease of expression. While reading the books that he wrote, I never felt bored.Looking for more works from you Joel.Thank you

Since I've been reading joelonsoftware for the past two years, a lot of this was already familiar to me, but it was well worth rereading. Some of the essays were old enough and I hadn't come by links to them so they were new to me, but not many. Most of the first part Managing People was already published in Joel's Smart and Gets Things Done.Anyone even considering working on shrink-wrap software, especially in a small company, should read this book. (Anyone considering consultingware should especially read the last chapter; it will convince you not to, unless you are a masochist.)

excelent book to rread, most read

great read...

He has a clean and simple writing style, and a very convincing perspective on application development. I think much of his insight seems obvious, but is not followed in any of the places I have worked.

Good book, but not as great as the first. But still it has a ton of good information, and its written very well.
