Another in the excellent series of healthy recipe books from the AHA. If you have an issue with fat or cholesterol in your diet, believe me, this recipe book (and the others in the series) will once again help you look forward to dining again. There are so many great recipes, it's hard to pick which is best but I would highly recommend the Cheesecake ... that's right, Cheesecake ;;; made with non-fat yogurt. To die for. You might have to beef up you spice rack with some new items but it's worth it.

When I purchased this item I had no idea it would be in the great shape it was in. It was even spiral bound as to read receipes from as you made the dish. And the book itself? JUST WHAT THE DOCTOR ORDERED. I cannot take cholesterol medications for some reason, but I have already made over 20 of the great dishes in this book, and even my HUSBAND is eating them. Wonderful, useful, helpful book, and a great seller and price to boot. Who could ask for anything more?

The recipes that I have tried have been tasty and easy to make. My husband recently had a heart attack and is diabetic so finding recipes that fit the bill have been somewhat difficult. He has been overwhelmed and has thought that he wouldn't be able to have good tasting healthy meals. This book has helped with that. I have only tried one chocolate cookie recipe that I would not make again and that could be because I had substituted all Splenda for the sugar. Those were pretty flavorless and had a funny texture.

I should have known that due to the year this cookbook was published, the recommendations are outdated, such as: Margarine is no longer a healthy substitute for butter. The recipes are quite typical for foods that were popular at the time. We will most likely use it as a loose guideline to prepare low-cholesterol meals.

If you need to be on a low fat low cholesterol diet, this book is a must have. Besides you cannot go wrong with a book published by the American Heart Association for learning good recipe for something you are trying to get under control.

I had a pamphlet from the American Heart Association from the early 70's. This book incorporates that pamphlet, has many more recipes and wonderful pictures of the dishes. The recipes are really good. I highly recommend it. Doesn't matter that it was published in the 70's.

I purchased the book "Greater" by same author and then I added this devotional, and I would tell anyone that read the book to be SURE to also get the 40 day experience devotional!I have read many books on trying to figure out what your purpose on Earth is for the Kingdom, and none of them has even been a clue and a half close to what they claimed I would be on my way to knowing, if not actually know, by the time I finished the book...THIS book did just that!I do want to add one thing that was NOT in the book.... in order to find your purpose, you have to1. Find a Void that is missing in the world/your area, etc.2. Be passionate about wanting to see that void filled/changedTHEN, I believe reading the book and the devotional will help to guide you to find your purpose!

Altering struggling with what to do for devotions for awhile, this was a great way to break from the normal routine.Ps Furtick doesn't give you cheesy quotes and pat little answers that doesn't deal with real life.

In my opinion, most religious fiction is not very good as everyone is just too nice or the scenes just aren't realistic as it's not "Christian" to write about how people really are. Lynn Austin, on the other hand, does a really nice job of fictionalizing a brief passage of the Bible into a full-length novel, and gets you into the heads of the characters. The imagery and scenery are very realistic and, for example, I could imagine me walking the dusty streets of the Middle Ages. The thing that struck me the most was this book really got me thinking and getting more out of the story than a random section of the 28th chapter of the book of Second Chronicles and makes me want to read the next one in the series: with the volume of books I read on a monthly basis, having one stick with me and recalling various sections of the book long after I read it (about a month ago) is, to me, impressive and tells me this was really a good book.I initially got this book during a Kindle free promotion and, as I write this review, the price is now $5.38 in the Amazon Kindle store - you will certainly get a lot more than $5.38 in entertainment value if you get this one!

I have found a new favorite author! I really enjoyed reading this book and can't wait to get started on the next! While this is still fiction, it's still based on the actual Bible story, so if you have trouble keeping everything in line of who's who in the Bible, this will help! It also made me realize that they went through similar conflicts and struggle as we do today.It can be hard to find good books on Amazon at times, this one is well worth the read.

Often time reading the Old Testament it is hard to piece everything together. Lynn Austin does a fantastic job of weaving the biblical text from the account of the kings and the prophets along with Jewish traditions that brings it to life.My only complaint would be her use of Yahweh. I understand her reasoning to differentiate the One True God from all the other gods, but for Orthodox Jews that is a sacred name of God. It was the very personal name of God given to Moses (translated as I AM in most English versions of the Bible). Jews only spoke that name 1 time a year during Yom Kippur and even then only by the high priest while praying in the Temple in the Holiest of Holies. I wish she had chosen from El ("God"), Eloah ("God"), Elohim ("Gods"), Shaddai ("God Almighty"), Ehyeh, and Tzevaot ("[of] Hosts") instead to refer to God.That one issue aside, I found this to be very entertaining and enriched my understanding of how those historical events unfolded and how it may have impacted those who walked through it.

Lynn Austin has written some of the best Bible-historical novels I've seen. My entire family - husband and all our grown kids -read this series, one after the other. "Are you almost finished with that one? I can't wait to get into it!". I learned more about the Old Testament during this period from this series than in all my 35 years as a serious Bible-reading Christian. It's eye-opening on so many levels that it functions as a sort of devotional as well - I was able to identify areas in my own life that needed improvement, became more aware of things to avoid in my own life, and was, again and again, impressed by God's amazing involvement in the lives of individuals, all throughout history, as well as in my own. I would think a complete atheist would enjoy these too, if they like historically accurate dramas that include intense relationships, terrible adversity, romance (not at all overt, but beautifully portrayed) and an overall uplifting story. Give me ten starts and I'll click all ten of them for this series. Most libraries have them, too!

When you compare the Bible and this book, it is like you are right there with them at the same time. It is so nice to think about what they could have been thinking or feeling so many years ago. This book makes all of them so human but still I can't wait to see some of them in Heaven. Wow! When I put the book down, I find myself reading it over and over again because it is such a fascinating read from beginning to end. But, I have to go on to see what Hezekiah does next, as king. God is Good. Well written.

This book is full of action. It has the political intrigue of ancient times. As a Christian it's the Bible coming to life. This book will grab your interest even on a secular level. I've been a Lynn Austin fan for years but never have ventured into her Bible based books. What a mistake! I am hooked and fear hitting the end of this series! The best book I've read in a long time. I live the fact that it's nearly from the pages of my Bible, but don't think that means it's tame! Gotta run ..... off to buy book #2!

Though Austin has to fill in details the Bible leaves out (and gives background to characters not disclosed in the Bible), this story does take the reader back in time. I found it fascinating how Austin reveals the rationalization leaders took in their journeys of compromise towards idolatry. This book isn't just the story of King Ahaz but of his sons, wife, relatives, advisors facing fear, Assyrians and other enemies, submission, heartache, hope and resolve. I truly recommend this book with no compensation but the enjoyment I received by reading Gods and Kings.

Who would have thought life had turned so dark back in the days of the Prophets. I feel there is a message is for America and the way we have turned from the love of God to the love of self. My heart aches for our country, this is a prophetic picture where we may wind up.

About the Author

Born 1956 in Pusan, Jeon Hyun-soo became a psychiatrist and a psychotherapy specialist after graduating from Kyung-nam High School and Pusan National University School of Medicine, and receiving neuropsychiatry training at the Soon Chun-hyang University Hospital. He attended Hanyang University Medical School where he obtained his master’s and doctoral degrees. He was introduced to Buddhist teachings two years after becoming a neuropsychiatry resident. After that, he met with patients and studied Buddhism concurrently, using Buddhist wisdom to aid him in treating his patients. The use of Buddhist wisdom was so effective that he detailed his experiences in his other books. In 1990, he opened Jeon Hyeon-soo Neuropsychiatry Clinic. In 2003, he took a month off from his clinic to go to Burma to partake in vipassana training. Later that year, he gathered specialists in Buddhism, psychology, and psychiatry to study together and hold discussions. This gathering developed into the South Korean Buddhist Psychotherapy Society in 2007. In March 2009, he took a year off from therapy to practice Buddhism, travel, and write books. In March 2010, he reopened his clinic and returned to helping patients. Dr. Jeon has authored the following books in Korean: Cry When You Want to Cry and A Psychiatrist’s Wisdom from the Buddha: Stories of Healing the Mind, A Psychiatrist’s “Guidebook for the Mind”, and collaborated in writing Value of Labor: A Buddhist Perspective, as well as translating Mark Epstein’s book Thoughts without a Thinker into Korean.  Born in the United States, HaNul Jun graduated from the University of Michigan in 2013 with a bachelor of arts in Asian Languages and Cultures focusing on Burmese Buddhist meditation. He is currently a PhD student at the University of Michigan with research interests in both Theravada and Mahayana Buddhist ascetic practice and their relationship to texts and doctrine, particularly the Abhidhamma. He hopes to engage in professional scholarship on Buddhism and religious asceticism upon completing his degree. During a period of over ten years Jun has had various experiences with Buddhism and meditative practice. Having first ordained temporarily as a novice monk in Myanmar in 2002, he also underwent temporary ordination as a Korean novice at Woljeong temple in Kangwon Province in 2006, and became a fully-ordained bhikkhu for three months in Myanmar in 2013. He also travelled to Dharamsala, India, in 2007 and 2011 to study Tibetan Buddhism. He has studied vipassana meditation in the Mahasi tradition under Sayadaw U Pandita, in the Goenka tradition, in the Shwe Oo Min tradition under Sayadaw U Tejaniya, and in the Pa-Auk tradition under Sayadaw U Revata. He also practiced Korean Ganhwa Seon at a retreat at Baekdamsa Temple.

This book is a rehash of some very technical terminology from Pa Auk's book Knowing and Seeing, and was apparently written by a Korean psychiatrist.So why was it even written? Beats me.

This is a stunning book that really helps everyone to understand the importance of protecting other creatures and their habitat, not just for their survival, but for our own. Jane Goodall is not a scold. She is thoughtful, compassionate, erudite, the most significant naturalist of her generation.

I'm a simple consumer - I'm not exactly a biologist or super into the topic of evolution. But this book, really, is aimed at anyone who wants to know more about chimpanzees and the scientific process of observation. While I wouldn't exactly recommend this to a friend as a light read, I would say it's worth reading if you're already interested. I learned a great deal about what it means to be a animal behavior researcher as well as a good deal about the habits of chimpanzees and other animals in Gombe.

I recently saw the movie "Jane" in the theaters. This book was a nice exploration into Jane Goodall's research in Gombe. Great photosof the chimpanzees in the main group and I liked the fact that she gave insight into how the group members were doing after she handedover the bulk of the research to her team. So glad she is still able to go back occasionally. Her voice to the world about the importance ofrespecting nature is so heartwarming.

Jane Goodall is the most talented woman whose love of animals brought her out to Africa. She observed so many things never witnessed by anyone before! As she knows the calls of the chimpanzies, I also would howl with my coyotes here in the desert. Her love of animals came quite early as did mine. This book is a great document of her many years with the animals in Gombe and her struggles there. Jane is an amazing woman and leader in protecting our wild places.

Seeing the pictures of her life and learning about the activities and progress of the projects that Jane Goodall has been committed to all these years is so heartening in a world that so often seems to not care about much of anything real. Jane's long commitment to the chimps, our closest relatives, is such an inspiring story. The photos, charts and words in this book help to inspire the reader, as well. If you are a fan of Goodall you will love owning this book. You will pick it up again and again.Thank you Jane Goodall for the world you allowed all of us to be part of. The chimps' world brings us closer to understanding our own selves and the part we must play in our whole world today.

With only a tent for protection, the book is the result of her years of keeping journals while living in the jungle and learning how to fit into the society of the chimps. It's beautiful, funny and sad; but most of all amazing.

Jane Goodall is a great writer and she really gives you a feel for what it was like to have been her. You want to know what happens to her chimps. I good read for any animal lover.

Jane Goodall is the right type of animal researcher, in that she appreciates our primate cousins but does not degrade the role of humans as some animal rights activists do. This is a good introduction to her life and work. Readers will especially appreciate the role of her mother as the person who encouraged her on her path. Beautiful pictures as well.

Rebecca Skloot is an award-winning science writer whose work has appeared in The New York Times Magazine; O, The Oprah Magazine; Discover; and many others. She is coeditor of The Best American Science Writing 2011 and has worked as a correspondent for NPR’s Radiolab and PBS’s Nova ScienceNOW. She was named one of five surprising leaders of 2010 by the Washington Post. Skloot's debut book, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, took more than a decade to research and write, and instantly became a New York Times bestseller. I ordered this book to read for one of my Ethics classes. I was worried about so much assigned reading to complete in one week, but it turned out to be a book that you just can't put down.It still amazes me that this is a woman's real life story, the story of her family, and how they have impacted science and anyone who works or benefits from the use of cellular research. That means just about every single person is connected to Henrietta in one way or another.This was a great book that I'm so glad I read. I learned a lot and it kept me entertained and fascinated for days. It will really change your perspective and make you appreciate this woman's contribution to our scientific and health fields.

From the very beginning there was something uncanny about the cancer cells on Henrietta Lacks’s cervix. Even before killing Lacks herself in 1951, they took on a life of their own. Removed during a biopsy and cultured without her permission, the HeLa cells (named from the first two letters of her first and last names) reproduced boisterously in a lab at Johns Hopkins — the first human cells ever to do so. HeLa became an instant biological celebrity, traveling to research labs all over the world. Meanwhile Lacks, a vivacious 31-year-old African-American who had once been a tobacco farmer, tended her five children and endured scarring radiation treatments in the hospital’s “colored” ward.In “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks,” Rebecca Skloot introduces us to the “real live woman,” the children who survived her, and the interplay of race, poverty, science and one of the most important medical discoveries of the last 100 years. Skloot narrates the science lucidly, tracks the racial politics of medicine thoughtfully and tells the Lacks family’s often painful history with grace. She also confronts the spookiness of the cells themselves, intrepidly crossing into the spiritual plane on which the family has come to understand their mother’s continued presence in the world. When science appears, it does so effortlessly, with explanations of cell anatomy or techniques like “fluorescence in situ hybridization” seamlessly worked into descriptions of the coloured wards of Johns Hopkins hospital to Lacks’s hometown of Clover, Virginia.But The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks is not a comfortable read. I visibly winced at descriptions of Henrietta’s blackened, burned skin after multiple rounds of devastating radiation treatments. I put the book down with a heavy sigh after reading about the experiments that black Americans have been unwittingly subjected to over the years. I cried twice, at events that I can’t talk about without seriously spoiling the book. But it is uplifting too, particularly in a stand-out chapter where Henrietta’s children, Deborah and Zakariyya, visit a cancer researcher to see their mother’s cells under a microscope.All of this is to be expected of a book that refuses to shy away from tackling important themes – the interplay between science and ethics, the question of who owns our bodies, and the history of racism in the US. And yet for all its grand scope, skilful writing and touching compassion, there is one simple element that makes As a final thought, I was struck by the parallels between Henrietta’s cells and her story. Henrietta’s entire family history was eventually condensed into a small sliver of cells that you could carry in a glass vial. They have achieved immortality, used by scientists throughout the world. Similarly, her entire life has been condensed into a moving tale and an exceptional book that you could read in a comfortable day. By right, it will achieve the same immortal status.

What a great book. My previous boss gave me a copy to read and I then bought a copy off of Amazon. I'm sending it to my cousin. Its a must read for anyone, regardless of race or ethnicity.

This could have been the amazing story of how a poor black woman's cells are used to combat, cancer, HIV , HPV, polio, and many more. And it is, a mother of five goes to John's Hopkins for a mass in her abdomen, a particularly aggressive form of cervical cancer, likely caused from HPV or other STD's she caught from her philandering husband. it's the casual way the medical community used (and profited from) cells samples from patients. In a world before informed consent, indeed before ethical testing laws, a young, pretty, vivacious woman deals with the culture of non disclosure to patients. A world where the doctor's word is sacrosanct. As a nurse I found this fascinating, people are much more protected now.But it's more than that, it's the story of Henrietta's family finding out 20 years later that their mother's cells are alive, and helping medical science! They deal with anger, disbelief, and a feeling of betrayal, since others have made money from her Henrietta's cells and they, ironically, can't afford health insurance! Skloot does a wonderful job describing the ongoing difficulties meeting the family and gaining their trust, describing their emotions and reactions (including superstition) in a way that humanized them. Many books have been written about the HeLa (HEnrietta LAcks) cells and the their effect on medical science. This book tells you what kind of person she was, and how it affected her family. One of the best books I've read in a while.

The first thing I think about after completing a book is - did I enjoy it? I absolutely did enjoy 'The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks'. And that is despite my lack of initial interest in the book jacket synopsis. Author Rebecca Skloot wrote an entertaining and very informative book. But as with a number of other reviewers, I have a lot of different thoughts about the book, some good and some not so good.The book is really several parallel stories tied closely together. First, there's Henrietta Lack's own story and those of the HeLa cell line developed from her biopsy tissues in 1951. Then there is the story of the Lacks family; impoverished, poorly educated, and ignorant of their mother's medical signifiance. Finally, there's the author's own story about her multi-year effort of research, interviews, and writing Henrietta Lacks' story. At times, the intertwined stories seemed to get in each others way. The disappointing thing to me, is that Henrietta's story itself, gets rather short shrift while the peripheral stories of Henrietta's children, grandchildren, etc.; as well as the author's story, take up the lion's share of the book.These are fairly minor complaints, however. The book is unique, interesting, and most importantly, a joy to read and I recommend it.
