The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe is one of the most well know children's fantasies out there. Yet somehow, I missed it when I was younger. So I decided to give it a read a few days ago.This book tells the story of Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy, four children living in a professor's house. One day, they walk through a wardrobe into the Land of Narnia, where mythical creatures exist and animals can talk. They are drawn into a battle between the White Witch and Aslan the Lion, a battle between good and evil.The best thing I can say for this book is that the writing style reminds me of Neil Gaiman. Indeed, I know for a fact that Lewis is one of Gaiman's main influences. Lewis uses a third-person perspective that loves to provide commentary on the story in the form of jokes and observations that make it fun to read. And, as a Christian Allegory, there is a level of symbolism that other series lack.Other than that, however, the book has aged poorly, both as a book written in 1950 being read in the present day, and as a book written for children being read by a person in his 20's. Peter, Susan, and Lucy are the same character, with no real personality differences to tell them apart. The characterization of everyone is shallow, with a massive wall between the pure evil and pure good characters. And the falling action after the climax is abbreviated to the point of lunacy.Now, I try and grade kids books on a curve to what I feel I would have enjoyed more when I was younger. In that sense, I give this book four stars. But I will state that unless you want check this off on your books of classics to read, it probably isn't worth your time.

This is an 8.5x11 (magazine size) paperback copy of an abridged version of the C.S. Lewis classic – NOT the original. “Independently Published”. The cover art appears to have been printed from a low resolution digital image, and the giant page margins are a waste of space. I was hoping this would be a good primer for my 7YO, but was sadly disappointed.

It can be a risk to re-read books that you loved as a child or a teen. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe is one of the books that I read countless times as I was growing up. The world of Narnia never got old or boring. Happily, I enjoyed this as much 40+ years later!Published in 1950, this was the then first book of the Narnia series. A prequel was published later. I read other books in the Narnia series, but this was always my favorite. People will tell you that this is a story about Christianity, a retelling of stories from the Bible, or an allegory. As a child I thought this was a wonderful fairy tale. As an adult, I was able to see the moral or Christian parallels but I chose to ignore them and read this as a fairy tale.Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy live in London but they are sent to the countryside during WWII to escape the blitz. They are housed with an elderly and wise professor and his strict and intimidating housekeeper in an old mansion. While playing hide and seek on a rainy day, Lucy hides in wardrobe. Behind the fur coats is the land of Narnia. Narnia is ruled by the White Witch and she has made the land "always winter but never Christmas." Narnia is divided into good animals and bad animals who serve the Witch. Lucy is helped by a "good" faun, who protects her from the Witch. The presence of a human in Narnia is threatening to the Witch and all the animals have been told to alert her immediately. Lucy safely returns home and her siblings do not believe her story. Edmund and Lucy then find Narnia together but he meets the White Witch and is put under her spell. On returning home, he lies to the two older siblings and claims Narnia does not exist. Eventually, all four siblings end up in Narnia, though with Edmund sneaking off to see the Witch. With the help of Mr. & Mrs. Beaver, Peter, Susan, and Lucy go to meet Aslan the Lion and together they battle to save Narnia. Each child is given a special task and a magical tool. Aslan makes huge sacrifices to save Edmund. The good and bad animals of the forest do battle and being a fairy tale, there is a happy ending.This book really sparked my imagination when I was a child. I just love the idea of a secret wardrobe that leads to another world. I still do! The book is dedicated to Mr. Lewis' goddaughter Lucy. It reads as if your kindly godfather was telling you a wonderful story. I love the little asides by the narrator. As a child, I did not realize that the story took place during WWII or that many children were removed from London for their safety. Otherwise, the story is as I remembered and I believe the illustrations are the same. This is a classic for a reason. If you missed it in childhood, read it yourself or share it with a special young person. It was lovely to visit Narnia again!

Perhaps I missed out on an integral part of childhood, but I did not have many fairy tales or books of magical tales in my life as a young boy. Lewis has an uncanny ability to make this readable as an adult and readable to a child. The reflections towards real life (one does not lock himself in a wardrobe!) and the magical life of Narnia (...because that is how beavers behave) are incredibly easy to relate to one another - it's as if you are there, understanding the ways of Narnia, though you've never been (and sadly, never will be).Notable are the Christian reflections of this tale, of what it's like to go down a path of sin with Edmund as he makes his way through the cold to the witch's castle, having fellowship amongst themselves at the dinner table, and Aslan's ultimate sacrifice, while being a being of immense power, allowed himself to be muzzled, beaten, and killed by the hands of the witch. A Christian myself, I look forward to re-reading the tale to grasp upon Lewis's deeper yet simple stories of the life of children and beings if Narnia. That being said, if you are not Christian, the story does not really reference Christianity much at all, save calling the male children "Sons of Adam" and the female children "Daughters of Eve".

I love this book; read it to the kids (5 & 9 yrs) as soon as it arrived, and they both loved it too. Yes, it's an adaptation and shortened and not written the way C.S. Lewis wrote the book (and there are some interesting things Lucy says that she never said in the original book or film version), but the pictures are beautiful and it captures more or less the gist of the story -- four children tumble through a magic wardrobe into Narnia to help Aslan fight the White Witch. When my kids are older, I'll read them the original, much longer C.S. Lewis story which is of course far superior, but for a picture book, this is wonderful for young children to learn the story.

This book explores the choices faced and preparations made when preparing for extended travels at sea. At its best, it describes the author's voyages and the preparations for them. Some of statistics and averages collected in interviews covering roughly 200 other cruising boats are also insightful.A great deal of space is given to the preparations and voyages of three fictional couples that represent the endpoints and middle, financially, of couples contemplating a cruise. These are presented as composites of various cruising couples the author has met. I did not find this writing approach to be especially entertaining or informative, with the most financially well-off couple coming off as something of a parody of themselves.The biggest drawback of the book is that the revised edition is now over 10 years out of date. Technology has improved in some areas to the point where the advice presented no longer applies.

Its a very good book just as others have said. I recommend you avoid the Kindle edition because many important graphs and tables are such low resolution they are hard to read. Such a shame because otherwise its an excellent reference.Also, the book is now ten years old and becoming a bit dated. Hopefully they will publish a new edition soon.

I certainly got a lo out of the book as Beth is very thorough. You can tell she has lived through it and wants to help so not everyone else has to go through the same.I am more of a study and go figure it out. At times her thoroughness seemed a bit much for me so I just skimmed over parts. More than anything it taught me that everyone will have a method that they found to work for them.It's really nice that she does some comparisons of types of sailors (simplicity, moderation, high life). I found myself more along the lines of the simplicity.Really worth while if you look to be/live on a sailboat. Otherwise you will feel like you are reading a textbook. Which for me was just fine. I will definitely use it as a reference in the future.

I've spent the last few years working through the sailing section at my local library. Over that time, I've read dozens of technical sailing books, many of them quite good, and more than a few targeted at the same audience as this one. I bought this book because it wasn't available to me, even through Inter-Library Loan. After reading it cover-to-cover, I'm amazed that no library in Minnesota has a copy. It's excellent, and clearly belongs in the top tier of sailing-related books that I've read. It's well-researched, well-written, well-organized, and well-though-out, and a bargain at only $26 for the hardcover. When and if I can finally afford to buy a boat and voyage somewhere, this book will be one of my major references.

I have over three dozen books on sailing, and this book is by far the most useful I own. I can't say enough good things about it. Every page is filled with golden nuggets of knowledge. Don't buy this book to learn how to sail, there are plenty of books out there to teach you the basics of sailing, buy this book if you already know how to sail but have always lacked for having that seasoned experience salt filling in all the tiny gaps of knowledge that can they themselves have learned the hard way. That is what Beth does, The entire volume is filled with tips that will make passage making that much easier. As I prepare for my first Pacific crossing in two months, I find myself repeatedly coming back to this book to guide me on the best practices of passage making. If you ever plan on making a passage, this book will give you back its purchase price a hundred times over just within the first few chapters. Get it, absorb it, and tell others!

Great book for any one who wants to go cruising. I have cruised extensively, read a ton of books on the subject, and worked as a marine tech for 5 years. This is the best book of its kind for someone who wants to know the basics and how to make decisions on which boat and what type of equipment and preparation you need to make. Even with my experience, I still go to it to do research on areas I want more on.

As Slocum and Nate Heffeschoff brought us the romance of sailing, and the Hiscock's told about details related mostly to wooden sailboats and seamanship, and the Pardey's are living examples of the purity of sailing, BETH Leonard has taken probably thousands of hours of painstaking research and personal experience, interviews of hundreds of other sailors, equipment manufacturers, analysis of industry studies, psychology, modern day websites and everything in between and things you may never have thought of and brought them all together in this ABSOLUTELY MUST HAVE AND USE reference and guide for sailors or would be sailors.It is not enough to simply have the romance in your heart and some experience and have read a few adventures of other sailors. I enjoyed reading of Ayser’s struggles to become an Arab Muslim in America. She approaches the subject with humor and candor.When Ayser was only three years old her family moved from Baghdad, Iraq to Columbus, Ohio. So Ayser went along with them since as she said “legal emancipation from your parents isn’t an option in Iraq until the age of seventy-four, and even then only if you’re married.” At the age of three culture shock is not such a major event. Two years later they moved to Lexington, Kentucky where Ayser was frequently called “Ayser Eraser”. (Hey, a kid I knew was named “Horace Lanier” – Need I tell you what he was called?) Her family continued to move around for several years, with each locale providing further adaptation challenges.Ayser writes of what it means to be an Arab and what it means to be an American. The transition from Iraqi Arab to American-Iraqi Arab often resulted in the feeling of being at the wrong end of the table. “You know that feeling of being at the wrong end of the table? Like you’re at a party but all the good stuff is happening out of earshot?” Always trying to fit in yet always feeling left out.And if life wasn’t hard enough, along came 9/11. In the mix of all the thrillers that I have been reading lately, this book came at the perfect time to read something different with a eye-opening look at a woman's story of what it means to be an immigrant in the land of America!Ayser Salman came to America with her family at age three, she soon experiences things that some kids shouldn't have to see like the incident at the Ohio daycare to growing up Muslim in America and abroad. It's not until after the 9/11 attacks that she sees a different America due to her being Muslim. But even through all she had experienced in her short life, she finally came to a place that she can embrace her Arab American self without judgement.I will warn you though before reading this book yourself, it will make you laugh out loud so hard during certain points and have tears for what happens during other parts. My only problem with this book, I loved the whole concept of having the end of each chapter with a deeper look at certain parts but I also got lost for not keeping up with the numbers for what had happened during those chapters that it got frustrating to the point that I just stopped reading the very end of the chapter. Good concept but it should have been in the chapter rather at the end!Overall, this was a good read that will make everyone realize that not all Muslims are alike, like the chapter when the family moved overseas to a highly strict Muslim country that not even Ayser was prepared for. ** Trigger warning for xenophobia, Islamophobia, and violence against women.)Ayser Salman spent the first three years of her life in Baghdad, Iraq – until her parents, both pharmacists, fled the “dictatorial regime of what was about to become Saddam Hussein’s Iraq” for the frigid climes of Columbus, Ohio. This would be the first of many moves: Along with her younger brother Zaid and a new sister, Lameace, Ayser and her family moved again when she was eight (Lexington, Kentucky), and again a year and a half later – this time to Saudi Arabia, where Ayser would attend an all-girls’ school. The Salmans found their way back to Lexington in time for Ayser’s junior year of high school: “a time of proms, underage drinking, and lots of teenage hormones.” Upon graduation, Ayser attended the University of Kentucky and, after a brief stint as a local news producer, the graduate film program at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. Now in her 40s, Ayser is a comedy writer, editor, and producer.All this moving around – not to mention rotating schools even when the family stayed put – could be enough to make anyone feel alienated. An outsider. A fish out of water. Or, in Ayser’s words, at wrong end of the table. Add to this the fact that Ayser was a brown Muslim girl in predominantly white Christian spaces. (Or, during her time in Saudi Arabia – the one period in her childhood when Ayser felt like she belonged – a somewhat liberal Westerner in a conservative Arab country.) After years of trying to blend in, disappear even, it wasn’t until her 30s and 40s that Ayser embraced her differences.THE WRONG END OF THE TABLE is a series of short essays and vignettes about Ayser’s experiences: being an immigrant (usually the only immigrant) trying to navigate the treacherous waters of elementary and high school; maintaining a social life (especially with boys) under the watchful eyes of her parents; grappling with depression and anxiety in adulthood; embracing her Muslim identity and becoming more politically active in the wake of 9/11 (and, later, during a Drumpf presidency); and dating in her 40s.I think I most enjoyed Ayser’s stories about her childhood in Columbus and Lexington, particularly as her Western sensibilities collided with her parents’ old school ways. For example, there’s the time a well-meaning boy at school gave Ayser a quarter:My father walks in and Mom shoves the quarter in his face.MOM: Talk to your daughter. A boy gave her this!Dad takes a moment to put on his bifocals and studies the offending item.DAD: Does he think you’re cheap?My mother looks at me, satisfied.DAD: He should have given you a silver dollar!Now, Mom is disgusted with me, the quarter, and Dad.The accounts of the Salmans’ time in Saudi Arabia are a little more harrowing; for instance, Ayser recounts the story of a classmate who tried for three years to escape her father’s custody and return to her mother in the States. That’s not to say that Ayser doesn’t mine these reservoirs for humor, either; to wit: Ayser’s very first time setting foot on Saudi Arabian soil:###We put our bags through the x-ray machine, and they were transported to a separate table where airport officials opened and searched them. This was before the age of prohibited liquids, so I couldn’t imagine what they would find that the x-ray hadn’t detected. A man wearing the traditional thawb and an official airport worker jacket eached into my bag, grabbed my Teen Beat magazine, and began combing through. Then, with a flick of his wrist, he tossed it in the trash behind him.“Wait!” I protested as my mother nudged me to be quiet. The man shook his head and said, “Haram.”Next, he found the loose magazine photos I had saved of Valerie Bertinelli lounging by a pool—I liked her hair in that picture and wanted to get mine styled in the same way. Nope. “Haram,” he said as he crumpled it up and tossed it aside.Finally, he got to my prized diary, a small pink book with a lock secured on it to hide all my nine-year-old secrets. On the cover was a picture of a cartoon boy and girl smooching, similar to what you’d find on a Hallmark card. Mr. Haram studied it for a few minutes as if he were debating asking me to unlock it.In Arabic, my mother said, “For children. She’s just a child.” That seemed to appease him. He put my diary back into my bag, but not before taking a sharpie and scribbling out the image of the boy and girl kissing on the cover.###I can only imagine my ten-year-old horror at having my diary manhandled and then defaced by a strange man.As someone who’s found herself newly single in her (early) 40s, I also enjoyed Ayser’s many (many) anecdotes about disastrous dates and failed relationships. (Can you even with that Charlie!?)In the forward, Reza Aslan discusses the importance of memoirs written by Muslim Americans to help shape the narrative about what it means to be “Americans who happen to come from Muslim backgrounds”; to combat the stereotypes and misinformation that have blossomed after 9/11 and the red hats’ hate-fueled Islamophobia. With increased visibility comes the potential to get it so very, tragically wrong; books like THE WRONG END OF THE TABLE help push back. The value in this cannot be understated.Yet, like so many humorous memories (Tiffany Haddish’s THE LAST BLACK UNICORN; Jenn Kirkman’s I KNOW WHAT I’M DOING AND OTHER LIES I TELL MYSELF; Tina Fey’s BOSSYPANTS; Amy Poehler’s YES PLEASE), THE WRONG END OF THE TABLE seems like it’s better suited for the audiobook format. Like, I only chuckled a handful of times while reading TWEOTB, but I’m pretty certain I would have been guffawing had I been listening to Ayser tell these stories out loud. And that’s usually the case: the narrator-slash-comedian’s inflections, embellishments, emphases, verbal quirks – all add a certain something to the retelling that you just can’t get from the written word. I would’ve loved to have heard Ayser’s impressions of her parents, as just one for instance.So if you have the opportunity to read the audiobook, take it! Trust me, they make commutes/dog walks/house cleaning/yard work go so much faster.
